If your cat will eat treats but turns away from regular food, possible causes include illness or pain, treats replacing meal calories, a food preference or negative association, and stress around mealtime. First, decide how urgently your cat needs a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat’s intake has dropped sharply, they are losing weight, seem unwell, or show vomiting, diarrhea, low energy, or other unusual behavior. PetMD advises seeking veterinary attention if a cat has gone more than 24 hours without eating. Don’t wait for a feeding trick to resolve ongoing appetite loss.

Appetite loss is a sign, not a diagnosis. Cornell Feline Health Center attributes this guidance to Dr. McDaniel: “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.” Your veterinarian can assess whether a medical issue is affecting appetite or making eating uncomfortable.
Four likely reasons a cat may eat treats but refuse meals
1. Illness or pain is affecting appetite or eating
Dental disease can make chewing painful. Kidney disease, gastrointestinal problems, arthritis, respiratory illness, nausea, and other conditions can also reduce appetite or make a cat avoid its usual food. A cat may still accept a highly appealing treat, so that alone does not show they are healthy. Cornell’s anorexia guidance explains that appetite loss can accompany many different health problems.

2. Treats are filling them up
Treats, snacks, toppers, and food used to give medication all count toward daily intake. If they add up, your cat may have less appetite for a meal, and an unbalanced share of treats can make the overall diet less appropriate. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends keeping treats and toppers to no more than 10% of total daily calories. That is a feeding recommendation, not a statistic about how cats typically eat.
If you are unsure how much your cat actually eats, VCA suggests keeping a food diary for three to five days. Record meals, treats, snacks, medication foods, and approximate portions, then share the log with your veterinary team. Ask them to set a suitable daily calorie and portion target for your cat.

3. They dislike the food or have formed a negative association
Cats can favor particular flavors, textures, or food forms. They may also avoid a food they associate with illness, medication, or a stressful period. Consider whether the recipe, texture, freshness, or routine changed around the time the refusal began.
Repeatedly switching foods is not a safe solution to a new or unexplained appetite change. Discuss it with your veterinarian, especially if your cat is eating less overall.

4. Stress or the feeding setup is putting them off
Noise, other animals, an exposed feeding area, or a disrupted routine can make mealtimes less comfortable. Nasal congestion can reduce a cat’s ability to smell food, and aroma can affect interest in a meal. Once your veterinarian has considered medical causes, try offering food in a quiet, safe location and keeping the schedule consistent.

- Measure and record intake. Log everything your cat eats, including treats and medication foods, with approximate amounts. A three-to-five-day record can help your veterinary team assess the pattern.
- Make meals predictable. Offer measured portions in a calm place and avoid high-calorie snacks between meals. Ask your veterinary team which food and daily amount are appropriate.
- Adjust food cautiously. If your veterinarian agrees, try a suitable texture or a small topper, and count its calories. Avoid making repeated food changes or switching to a home-cooked diet without veterinary guidance.
- Consider enrichment only if your cat is medically cleared. A puzzle or interactive feeder can make mealtime more engaging for some healthy picky eaters. Use a measured amount of regular food if appropriate; a feeder is enrichment, not treatment for illness.
VCA discusses scheduled, limited access to food for a healthy picky eater. Do not use meal restriction to manage a cat who may be ill or whose appetite has changed suddenly; ask your veterinarian what feeding plan is safe.
