But a sudden increase in meowing or a new, hoarse-sounding voice should not be dismissed as vocal fatigue. It can signal a need, stress, pain, illness, or an age-related change.
Can meowing make a cat tired or hoarse?
There is no established threshold or clinical rule showing that ordinary meowing makes cats tired. That does not mean a cat’s voice can never sound hoarse: a scratchy or changed meow may accompany an upper respiratory infection, particularly alongside watery eyes, nasal discharge, sneezing, or reduced appetite. Why is your cat meowing?
Ordinary communication
Adult cats commonly meow to communicate with people. Depending on the setting and the cat’s body language, a meow may be a greeting or a request for attention, food, play, or access to a room or other place. The sound alone does not tell you exactly what the cat wants; look at what is happening around it. Stress, frustration, or mating behavior
Changes in the environment, frustration, or reproductive behavior may prompt more vocalizing. Pay attention to when and where it happens and whether there is an apparent trigger. A pattern can help explain what is going on, but it is not a diagnosis.

Pain, illness, or aging
Pain or illness can change how much a cat vocalizes. Older cats that begin meowing excessively, including at night, may also need assessment for medical problems and sensory or cognitive changes. If food, attention, or access reliably follows a particular meow, the behavior may be reinforced over time; that does not mean the cat is deliberately manipulating you. Rule out underlying causes before trying to change the behavior. The ASPCA’s guidance on meowing and yowling discusses both medical assessment and behavior.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange veterinary advice for a new pattern
Contact your veterinarian if meowing has suddenly increased, the voice sounds different, or the change comes with altered appetite, weight, activity, grooming, or urination. Frequent nighttime vocalizing in an older cat also merits attention because health, sensory, and cognitive changes may be involved. A short log or video showing when the vocalizing happens can help you describe the pattern.

Get urgent care for distress or urinary straining
A male cat that cries while straining to urinate needs urgent veterinary assessment. Open-mouth panting with vocalization or other signs of severe distress also warrants urgent care. Do not treat these situations as ordinary attention-seeking.

Check needs and look for a pattern
First check that your cat has food, fresh water, litter access, opportunities for play and attention, and a comfortable environment. Notice the time, place, apparent trigger, body language, and what happens after the meow. A written note or video can make it easier to explain the behavior to your veterinarian.

Respond to attention-seeking without punishment
Only after health concerns have been ruled out, if the vocalizing is clearly attention-seeking, reward calm or quiet moments rather than delivering attention during the meow. Do not hit or scold your cat; punishment can make it fearful and does not address why it is vocalizing. Offer play and food-based enrichment
Scheduled interactive play and food-dispensing toys can give a cat appropriate ways to play and work for food. They are enrichment options, not proven fixes for unexplained meowing, a new voice change, or a medical problem.
