A cat that suddenly drinks more may be reacting to food or a change in routine, but persistent thirst can also be a sign of kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, infection, fever, or a medication effect. Thirst alone cannot identify the cause. Keep water available, track drinking and urination for 24 hours, and contact your veterinarian for advice.
How much water is normal for a cat?
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gives an approximate daily estimate of 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight. For an average 10-pound cat, that is about one cup a day. This is a general guide, not a diagnostic threshold; a cat’s needs and drinking habits vary.

Food moisture affects what you see in the bowl. Wet food can contain up to 80% water, so a cat eating it may drink less directly. Cats eating dry food usually take in more of their daily water requirement by drinking. Consider your cat’s usual diet and baseline rather than judging by bowl volume alone. What changes should you look for?
Pay attention to changes from your own cat’s normal pattern. Possible clues include an increasingly empty water bowl, drinking from taps or sinks, more frequent litter-tray visits, larger urine clumps, or accidents outside the litter box. Note whether appetite, weight, energy, or general behavior has changed as well.

What can cause increased thirst?
Increased thirst is a sign, not a diagnosis. Several different conditions can affect how much a cat drinks or urinates, and a veterinarian needs to assess the full picture.
Kidney disease
Kidney disease is among the conditions associated with increased thirst and urination. Drinking more may accompany disease-related changes in water balance, but it cannot confirm kidney disease on its own.

Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes can cause excessive drinking and urination, sometimes alongside weight loss and increased appetite. When glucose spills into the urine, it draws water with it, increasing urine volume and thirst. If you notice these signs together, contact a veterinarian promptly; symptoms alone cannot establish a diagnosis. Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is more common in older cats. Increased thirst and urination, along with weight loss despite a good or increased appetite, can be clues. A veterinarian confirms it through assessment and thyroid hormone blood testing; age and symptoms alone are not enough. Other possible causes
Urinary infection, fever, and medicines such as steroids may also contribute. Rarely, diabetes insipidus or other conditions affecting the kidneys or liver may be involved. This is not a complete list, and testing helps distinguish among possibilities. VCA’s diabetes insipidus information notes that the condition is rare and describes other potential explanations for increased thirst and urine production.
What should you do at home?
- Measure intake for 24 hours. Record how much water you put out and how much remains. Note household changes that could affect the measurement, such as other pets sharing the bowl or water being refilled.
- Write down food and symptoms. Note whether your cat eats wet or dry food, any changes in appetite or weight, and what you observe in the litter box, including frequency, urine volume, or accidents.
- Keep water freely available. Do not restrict water to reduce drinking. Restriction can lead to dehydration and illness, including in cats with diabetes insipidus.
- Contact your veterinarian. Share your 24-hour notes and ask whether to bring a urine sample; PDSA recommends taking one if possible. Seek prompt advice if thirst occurs with increased urination, weight loss, appetite changes, or other signs of illness. PDSA’s guidance on increased thirst in cats outlines these steps.
The reviewed guidance does not set a universal emergency threshold for thirst alone. If your cat seems acutely unwell, contact a veterinary practice for triage rather than waiting to complete a tracking period.

What might the veterinarian check?
The veterinarian may ask about drinking and urination, diet, medicines, and other symptoms, then perform an examination and recommend tests based on the cat’s situation. Blood and urine tests can help investigate diabetes and other disease; thyroid hormone blood testing is used to confirm hyperthyroidism, often alongside broader checks of overall health. No single symptom or home measurement can substitute for that assessment.
