Why Your Cat May Not Respond: 6 Possible Reasons

A missed response doesn’t prove a cat is defiant. Learn six possible explanations, how to practice cues, and which changes merit veterinary attention.

A cat that doesn’t respond to you may not understand the cue, may be focused elsewhere, or may have a change in hearing or health. A missed response by itself does not show that a cat is being stubborn or deliberately ignoring you. If the behavior is new, persistent, or accompanied by physical signs, contact your veterinarian.

Six possible reasons your cat may not respond

1. The response does not match what you expect

Cats may respond in a different way or on a different timeline than a person expects. One missed cue cannot establish intent or defiance. Consider what your cat actually does, and whether the response differs by situation.

2. The cue has not become meaningful

A word or gesture may not yet signal a clear action to your cat. Practice one simple cue consistently in a calm setting, and reward the response you want. Cornell describes food treats as positive reinforcers in feline behavior management; they can support practice, but do not guarantee a response or treat deafness or illness. Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance on feline behavior discusses positive reinforcement.

3. Something else has your cat’s attention

Sounds, movement, play, or activity nearby may compete with a cue. Notice whether your cat responds in quieter settings or when more motivated. A response that varies by context can help you adjust how and when you practice, but it does not rule out a health concern.

4. Your cat may have hearing loss

Some cats are born deaf; illness, injury, or other acquired conditions can also compromise hearing. White cats with blue eyes have an increased risk of congenital deafness, but coat and eye color cannot diagnose an individual cat. Cornell’s deafness guidance notes that about 80 percent of white cats with two blue eyes show signs of deafness by about four days old, according to James Flanders, DVM; the source does not state a year for this figure.

5. Ear discomfort or another health problem may affect response

Ear disorders can cause discomfort and may affect hearing. Medical conditions can also change behavior or responsiveness. If your cat persistently scratches its ears, has discharge or other visible ear changes, or seems unwell, seek veterinary advice. Cornell veterinarian James Flanders advises: “If you observe your cat persistently scratching at its ears, do not probe into them to find the cause. Instead, consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.” Do not insert objects or use ear medication unless a veterinarian instructs you to.

6. Aging, cognitive change, or a neurologic problem may be involved

Hearing loss is common in advanced-age cats, and cognitive or neurologic conditions may affect behavior and responsiveness. A new or progressive change in an older cat should be assessed by a veterinarian rather than assumed to be ordinary aging. Cornell provides information on cognitive dysfunction, senior cats, and neurological disorders.

When to adjust cue practice—and when to call the vet

How long the pattern has been present and whether anything else has changed can help guide your next step. These clues are not a diagnosis.

  • Longstanding and context-specific: If your cat has always been selective about responding, and response varies with setting or motivation, try practicing a consistent cue in a calmer setting and rewarding the response.
  • New, persistent, or getting worse: Contact your veterinarian, particularly if the change appears alongside altered behavior or physical condition, or if your cat is older.
  • Ear signs: Persistent scratching, discharge, or visible ear changes warrant veterinary advice. Do not probe the ear.
  • Head injury or concerning neurologic signs: Seek prompt veterinary attention.

A veterinary examination can help determine whether a medical issue is contributing. Do not try to establish deafness by startling your cat or testing its ears at home.

Communicating safely with a cat who may be deaf

If hearing loss is suspected or confirmed, use visual cues rather than relying on spoken commands. Cornell recommends safety adaptations, including keeping a deaf cat indoors and avoiding startling approaches. James Flanders, DVM, advises: “Avoid startling the animal. Never approach it from behind without signaling your presence.” A veterinarian can advise on your cat’s individual needs.
