A cat’s personal space is more than a cozy spot: it is a place to feel protected, rest, and decide when to interact. Quiet hiding places and suitable elevated perches can help cats feel secure. If your cat starts hiding more than usual or its pattern changes, arrange a veterinary check rather than assuming the cause is behavioral.
Why does personal space matter to cats?
The AAFP/ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines describe a cat’s comfort with its environment as closely connected to physical health, emotional wellbeing, and behavior. They identify safe places as one of five core environmental needs. The guidelines define one as “a place that a cat can retreat to so that it feels protected.”

A retreat gives a cat some choice and control: it can withdraw when it wants quiet, then come out when it feels ready. Hiding can also help a cat cope with unfamiliar or stressful situations. It is not automatically a sign that something is wrong.

Cats may hide to sleep, feel safer, or take a break from activity. Cats Protection describes hiding as normal behavior. A new or stressful situation can also prompt a cat to seek shelter; veterinary interaction guidance emphasizes safety, familiarity, choice, and control during encounters with people.

Pay attention to your own cat’s usual habits. A cat that regularly naps in a box is different from one that suddenly spends much more time hidden or stops appearing for familiar routines. A change from baseline is more useful to notice than hiding by itself.
How can you make a safe retreat?
Offer a quiet, covered option
Choose a calm location where the cat can get in and out easily. A cardboard box on its side may be enough; a covered bed is another option. Cats Protection recommends a quiet, covered place away from food, water, and litter trays.

Keep a carrier accessible
A carrier can double as a familiar retreat when it stays available at home rather than appearing only when the cat must travel. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines include an accessible carrier among possible safe places. Let the cat choose whether to use it.

Add height when your cat prefers it
Some cats like to rest above floor level and watch their surroundings. A stable perch can provide that option. Make sure it is reachable: a low location or ramp may be more suitable for kittens or cats with limited mobility. An elevated spot is an additional choice, not a substitute for an easy-to-access retreat.

Let the cat decide when to emerge
Do not pull a cat out of its hiding place simply to encourage interaction. Let it leave on its own, and keep the area calm. Cats differ: a cover that helps one feel secure may not suit another, especially in a veterinary setting.
What changes in a home with multiple cats?
Do not make cats depend on one shared hiding spot or a single contested route to essential resources. The 2013 AAFP/ISFM guidelines recommend at least as many individual safe places, each sized for one cat, as there are cats in the household; they also recommend separating those places from one another.

Distribute resting and hiding options around the home. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that separated resources can help cats access food, resting places, and other essentials with less competition or confrontation. The aim is to give each cat options, rather than forcing them to share a favored location.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
If hiding becomes more frequent or unusual for your cat, contact a veterinarian to check for illness. Cats Protection advises a veterinary assessment when a cat’s hiding increases. If no medical cause is found, behavior support may be appropriate. A change in behavior alone cannot establish the cause, so avoid diagnosing it at home.
