Begging alone cannot identify the cause. A new or persistent increase in appetite deserves closer attention—especially if your cat is losing weight, drinking or urinating more, vomiting, or having diarrhea.
When a bigger appetite may be normal
High energy needs or a feeding mismatch
Growing kittens and pregnant or nursing cats can have higher energy requirements. A cat eating a diet that does not provide enough usable energy may also eat more. These possibilities do not mean you should automatically increase portions: the right amount depends on age, body condition, diet, activity and health. A veterinarian can help assess whether the feeding plan fits your cat.

Consider whether the appetite change is new, persistent, or accompanied by a change in weight or health. A cat that has always been food-motivated is different from one that suddenly eats more than usual.

Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is common in middle-aged and older cats. Affected cats may have a larger appetite while losing weight; increased thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea and hyperactivity can also occur. The pattern is a reason to arrange veterinary assessment, not a way to diagnose the condition at home. Cornell describes the condition and its signs at Feline Health Center: Hyperthyroidism.

Diabetes mellitus
A cat with diabetes may lose weight despite eating well and may drink and urinate more. When the body cannot use glucose normally for energy, it may break down fat and protein even while the cat is eating. Diagnosis and treatment require a veterinarian; a single clinic blood-glucose result may not be conclusive in every case, so additional testing or assessment for other conditions may be needed. See Cornell’s Feline Health Center: Diabetes Mellitus.
Intestinal parasites
Parasites can contribute to digestive problems or poor condition, particularly in kittens or cats with relevant exposure. Signs may include vomiting or diarrhea, but they are not specific to parasites—and hunger alone does not establish that a cat has worms. A veterinarian may use fecal flotation or other testing to investigate.

- 【Timed & Portion Control】 Program up to 6 meals a day with precise portion sizes to keep your pet healthy and prevent overeating.
Cornell reports gastrointestinal parasite prevalence as high as 45% in some populations and roundworms in 25% to 75% of cats, with higher rates in kittens. Those figures describe particular populations, not the likelihood that an individual hungry cat is infected. Cornell’s overview is Gastrointestinal Parasites of Cats.
Poor digestion or nutrient absorption
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) can prevent food from being properly digested and nutrients from being absorbed. It is one possible veterinary differential, but the available guidance does not establish how often it occurs in cats. It should not be assumed from appetite alone.

- 10 s Voice Recorder: You can record a 10 s calling message. The feeder would play the audio before each meal
- Precise Portion control:1 Portion ≈ 10 Grams ≈ 1/12 Cup. Allowed kibble size less than 0.5 inch. Up to 6 meals a day. The portion means the kibble amount of each bowl
Medication and health history
Tell the veterinarian about every medication your cat takes and any recent changes in appetite, energy, drinking, urination or bowel habits. Medication effects vary, and evidence about a medication-related increase in appetite in dogs should not be assumed to apply to cats.
Why the number on the scale matters
Begging is difficult to interpret by itself. Eating more while losing weight is a more concerning pattern because it can point to a problem with metabolism or the body’s use of nutrients. Increased thirst or urination alongside an appetite change adds another reason to call the veterinarian. Vomiting, diarrhea, altered energy, a poor coat or a marked behavior change also matter.

When to contact a veterinarian
Arrange a veterinary discussion for a sustained or marked appetite change, and contact the clinic promptly if it comes with weight loss, increased thirst or urination, vomiting, diarrhea, or a noticeable change in energy or condition. Do not wait for severe deterioration when appetite changes occur alongside other abnormalities. Appetite alone cannot tell you which cause is responsible.

What to record before the appointment
A concise history helps the veterinarian judge which explanations and tests fit your cat’s signs. Record:
- When the change began and whether it is getting stronger.
- The food type and the amount offered and actually eaten, measured if possible.
- Recent weights or other changes in body condition.
- Medication, activity and any change in access to food.
- Water intake, urination, stool, vomiting and energy changes.
What the veterinarian may check
The clinician will choose an evaluation based on the history and examination. Depending on the signs, it may include blood chemistry, urinalysis, thyroid hormone measurement such as total T4, and fecal parasite testing. A blood-glucose result may need to be interpreted with other findings or followed by additional tests. VCA outlines possible steps in its Increased Appetite guidance. Testing helps distinguish a feeding or life-stage mismatch from illness; no single sign or test should be interpreted without the clinical context.
Supporting a feeding routine without mistaking it for treatment
If a veterinarian has assessed the appetite change and your cat’s feeding plan is appropriate, a puzzle feeder or feeding toy can provide a way to encourage hunting-style feeding behavior. It is an optional enrichment tool, not a treatment for hyperthyroidism, diabetes, parasites or other medical causes. VCA discusses feeding toys in its Enrichment for Cats guide.
If hyperthyroidism is diagnosed
Cornell lists anti-thyroid medication, radioactive iodine therapy, surgery and dietary management as treatment options. The suitable choice depends on the individual cat. Discuss the need for ongoing medication or monitoring, procedural and anesthesia considerations, whether a prescription diet must be fed exclusively, and how other health conditions affect the decision. Iodine-restricted dietary treatment has limitations and should be considered with a veterinarian, not tried as a home experiment. See Cornell’s hyperthyroidism guidance.
