A cat that has always made short squeaks, chirps, or trills and otherwise seems well may simply have a distinctive vocal style. A squeak that is new—especially if your cat’s usual meow has become hoarse or disappeared—can signal a voice change related to an upper respiratory infection or another problem affecting the throat or larynx. The sound alone cannot tell you which; whether it is new and what else has changed matter most.
What does a cat’s squeak mean?
Start with your cat’s usual sound. Some cats communicate with brief, high-pitched noises rather than a full meow. A squeak heard in a familiar situation, with no other change in your cat’s health or behavior, is different from a sudden change in a cat that normally meows.

Cats use different vocalizations in different contexts. PetMD describes chirping as a short, high-pitched sound that may occur with excitement, when seeking attention, or when a cat notices something nearby, such as prey it cannot reach. Trilling is another high-pitched sound often used in friendly greetings. Those are examples, not guaranteed translations of every cat’s squeak. An ASPCA guide notes that cats may meow to greet people, request attention or food, or ask for access; the situation and your cat’s body language can help you interpret a sound.

Upper respiratory infection
PetMD identifies upper respiratory infection as the most common cause of a changed or lost voice in its guide to feline voice loss. Inflammation affecting the larynx can temporarily alter how a cat sounds. An infection may also come with signs such as squinty eyes, colored discharge from the eyes or nose, low energy, or eating and drinking less.

PetMD says a voice may return over days to weeks as an infection resolves, but that timeframe is not a reason to wait without considering other symptoms or getting veterinary advice.
Other possible throat or larynx problems
Less common possibilities listed by PetMD include a foreign object in the throat, injury, an abscess, irritation from a caustic substance, swelling or other disease, laryngeal paralysis, and tumors or polyps. These possibilities cannot be distinguished by the sound alone; a new voice change needs to be assessed in context rather than treated as a diagnosis.

Is a changed meow different from excessive meowing?
A cat whose voice sounds different is not necessarily meowing more often, and frequent meowing is a separate pattern. Cats may vocalize to greet, seek food or attention, or ask for access. The ASPCA also notes that increased vocalization in older cats can accompany medical problems, including thyroid or kidney disease. A new, unexplained increase in vocalizing—or a new change in sound—is a reason to seek veterinary guidance.

Get veterinary guidance for a new or unexplained change in your cat’s normal vocalization. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the voice change occurs with low energy, reduced eating or drinking, drooling, dropping food, vomiting or regurgitation, or tiring easily. Signs such as squinty eyes or colored eye or nasal discharge also matter when assessing a possible respiratory infection.

Seek urgent care for breathing or swelling signs
PetMD advises urgent veterinary care if a cat has noisy breathing, visible effort to breathe—including using the belly muscles—or neck swelling or reluctance to move the head. Blue, purple, or bright red gums are also urgent warning signs. Do not treat breathing difficulty as a routine home-care issue.
What to tell the veterinary team
Note when the sound changed, whether it is constant or intermittent, and whether your cat’s breathing, appetite, drinking, energy, swallowing, or eye and nasal symptoms have changed. These observations can help the veterinary team assess what is happening; they do not replace an examination.
