A dog that has started barking, growling, lunging, or freezing around other dogs is showing reactivity: an observable state of excessive arousal, not a diagnosis and not proof that the dog intends to attack. A sudden change should first prompt a veterinary check because pain or another physical health change can appear as behavior change even when there is no obvious limp. While you arrange that assessment, prevent rehearsals of the reaction, create distance on walks, and begin reward-based behavior work at a level your dog can handle.
What “reactive” means—and what it does not tell you
Reactivity describes what you can see: barking, growling, lunging, spinning, hard staring, whining, or trying to flee when another dog appears. Cornell’s behavior specialists describe reactive dogs as becoming overly aroused by ordinary stimuli. Fear is common, but frustration, previous learning, genetics, limited socialization, and lack of training can also contribute. The same dog may react on leash but not when loose, or only in crowded places, at night, or when another dog approaches head-on.

The label does not establish a bite risk. A dog that makes a great deal of noise may be trying to increase distance rather than make contact. Conversely, quiet stalking, snapping, nipping, or biting deserves immediate safety planning even if the dog is not dramatic. Context, body language, distance, and whether contact occurred are more informative than volume alone.

Why a sudden change needs a veterinary check
When a previously manageable dog suddenly reacts, contact your veterinarian rather than assuming the cause is stubbornness or a training failure. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) notes that a sudden behavior change can be an early sign of a physical health change. Pain may be subtle and can occur without limping, so a normal-looking gait does not rule it out.

Describe exactly what changed, when it began, which dogs or settings are involved, and what happens immediately beforehand. Bring a short video only if you can record it safely; do not create a confrontation to obtain footage. A veterinarian can decide what examination or further evaluation is appropriate. Do not try to diagnose pain, anxiety, or aggression from a description alone.
Seek prompt veterinary guidance when the change is abrupt, the dog appears distressed in other situations, anxiety is severe, or there has been a bite. Until your dog is assessed, choose routes and routines that minimize close encounters.
Find the pattern before you change the plan
For several days, keep a simple trigger log. The goal is not to label your dog but to discover the conditions under which learning is possible.

- Which dogs? Note size, sex if known, movement, distance, and whether the other dog is approaching, passing, staring, or barking.
- Where and when? Record narrow paths, open fields, crowded areas, darkness, traffic noise, and time of day.
- What is your dog doing? Write down early signs such as turning away, closing the mouth, stiffening, scanning, or slowing before the bark or lunge.
- How close is too close? Estimate the distance at which your dog can still eat, respond to their name, and move with you. That is the starting distance for training.
- What happened next? Note whether the other dog passed, you changed direction, or the dog was allowed to greet. Record how long it took your dog to relax.
Patterns often reveal a workable adjustment. A dog that reacts only when another dog is within 20 feet has a different training setup from one that reacts across a street. A dog that can watch calmly in an open area may need more distance or visual blocking on a narrow sidewalk.
What to do on walks right now
Management prevents repeated explosions while you build new responses. It is not giving up on training; it keeps your dog below the level at which learning breaks down.
- Choose lower-trigger routes and times. Walk when fewer dogs are out and use wider paths where you can see ahead. Cornell behavior specialist Dr. Katherine Houpt’s practical advice is: “Walk your dog when others aren’t out, and avoid the dog park.”
- Spot dogs early. Scan ahead, keep enough leash slack for your dog to move, and turn away before the trigger is close. A practiced U-turn or cheerful change of direction is safer than waiting for a lunge.
- Use visual barriers. Move behind a parked car, tree, hedge, building corner, or other solid object when feasible. Blocking the view can buy the seconds needed to pass without a reaction.
- Ask for space. Calmly tell approaching handlers that your dog needs distance and ask them to keep their dog away. Do not rely on a stranger to interpret your dog’s signals.
- Skip forced greetings. Do not push a fearful or over-aroused dog toward another dog, hold the leash tight while insisting on “say hello,” or use a dog park as an immersion exercise. Cornell warns that forcing uncomfortable exposure can increase fear and worsen behavior.
Use secure equipment that you can handle comfortably and follow local leash rules. If your dog has a history of contact behavior, discuss additional safety measures with a qualified professional rather than improvising a restraint or introducing equipment through force.

Desensitization and counterconditioning: a step-by-step plan
Desensitization means presenting a trigger in small, manageable steps. Counterconditioning pairs that trigger with something your dog values so the emotional response can change. Merck Veterinary Manual warns against “flooding”—prolonged exposure until a dog stops reacting—because it is stressful and may increase fear.
- Pick a controlled starting point. Work in an open area with a calm helper dog if a professional approves. Begin far enough away that your dog notices the other dog but can still eat, look back at you, and move normally. If your dog is already barking, lunging, rigid, or unable to take food, increase distance.
- Pair appearance with reward. The instant your dog sees the other dog, deliver a small, high-value treat. Continue at a pace that keeps your dog under threshold. A favorite training treat is an optional aid, not a cure; timing and distance do the essential work.
- End before the reaction. After a few calm repetitions, turn away or leave while your dog is still successful. Short sessions are easier to recover from than a long encounter.
- Change one variable at a time. Over multiple sessions, reduce distance by small amounts, increase movement, or practice in a mildly busier location—not all three at once.
- Respond to stress immediately. If your dog stops eating, stiffens, scans, vocalizes, or lunges, do not wait for calm at the same distance. Create space, use a barrier, and resume later at an easier level.
Progress is measured by relaxed body language, the ability to disengage, and faster recovery—not by forcing a nose-to-nose greeting. Some dogs may eventually pass others comfortably without wanting to interact. That is a valid goal.
Management and training must work together
AVSAB summarizes the balance clearly: “Training without management risks making the training slower or ineffective. Management without training leaves the dog still fearful and afraid.” Use both. Route changes, visual barriers, and distance reduce immediate stress; systematic practice teaches a different response over time.

Everyone who walks the dog should use the same cues and exit strategy. Keep a written plan near the leash: the minimum working distance, the turn-around cue, where treats are stored, and which routes are easiest. Arrange low-trigger enrichment at home—sniffing, food puzzles, gentle play, or rest—so every outing does not carry the burden of exercise and social exposure.

Corrections, leash jerks, yelling, shock, and confrontational handling may suppress a bark in the moment without changing the underlying fear or frustration. Merck reports that punishment-based or confrontational methods are more likely to produce fear, avoidance, and increased aggression. They can also make another dog predict pain, increasing the emotional intensity of future encounters.

How to think about bite risk
Owner-reported research summarized by the American Animal Hospital Association included 1,360 complete responses. In that study population, 24% of dogs described as reactive were reported to bite and 79% were reported to show piloerection (raised hair). The summary grouped dogs into four behavior clusters: low-risk signalers (40%), frustrated escalators (18%), impulsive escalators (32%), and a fourth higher-risk cluster that was not detailed in the inspected summary. These are findings from that particular study population, not prevalence estimates for all dogs, and the underlying study year is not stated in the summary.
Those figures cannot predict what your dog will do. For practical decisions, prioritize whether teeth made contact, whether the dog can disengage at a known distance, how quickly arousal escalates, and whether handling can be performed safely. A loud dog without contact still needs cautious management; a quiet dog that snaps needs an individualized safety plan even if the episode looked brief.
When to bring in a behavior professional
Ask your veterinarian for a referral to a veterinary behaviorist or a suitably qualified, reward-based trainer when reactions are frequent, intense, difficult to avoid, or involve snapping or biting. Professional help is especially important after a sudden change, when anxiety affects daily life, or when household members cannot safely manage walks.

Share your trigger log and videos recorded from a safe distance. A professional can identify the working threshold, design controlled setups, review equipment and handling, and coordinate with your veterinarian if additional medical support is considered. No single protocol or timeline fits every dog; the plan should be adjusted to the individual’s responses.
How to measure improvement without rushing it
Track objective details weekly: the closest distance at which your dog can eat and respond, the number of recoveries without barking, recovery time after a sighting, and which settings remain difficult. Improvement may appear first as noticing a dog and then looking back at you, choosing to move away, or recovering in seconds instead of minutes. Setbacks after a crowded walk, poor sleep, or an unavoidable close pass do not erase learning; return to an easier distance for the next session.
There is no evidence-based deadline by which every reactive dog becomes comfortable with other dogs. The realistic aim is safer handling, lower distress, and reliable choices in the situations that matter to your household. Some dogs will remain selective about social contact, and that can be managed successfully without forcing interaction.
