Champion Australian racehorse Winx lost her first foal overnight, the mare’s owners announced on 13 October 2020. Their statement said the foal was a filly and that their focus was on Winx’s health. Later reporting identified the sire as I Am Invincible and said the filly was born deceased, while Winx was taken to a veterinary hospital with serious complications. The sources do not establish a precise cause of death or a diagnosis for Winx.
What happened to Winx’s first foal?
On 13 October 2020, the Kepitis, Tighe and Treweeke families announced that Winx had lost her foal overnight. The owners’ statement described the foal as a filly and said Winx’s health was their priority. It did not provide a medical explanation or further clinical details.
In an April 2024 report, Racing.com identified the foal’s sire as I Am Invincible and reported that the filly was born deceased. The report also said Winx was admitted to a veterinary hospital with serious complications.
What is known about the cause?
The owners’ announcement did not state why the foal died. The later Racing.com account describes Winx’s complications but does not establish a specific veterinary diagnosis. The cause of the foal’s death and the nature of Winx’s complications therefore remain unspecified in these reports; there is no basis here to infer more.

Winx’s later foals
The later births are separate from the loss in 2020. Winx subsequently had surviving foals, including a Pierro filly and a Snitzel colt. Racing.com reported on 23 September 2026 that she had also given birth to a Too Darn Hot filly, described as her third surviving foal.
- 2024 Pierro filly: The Victoria Racing Club reported that she sold for A$10 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale on 8 April 2024. The VRC described the price as double the previous Australian record for a filly; Racing.com also called it a record. This was the sale of a later foal, not the filly lost in 2020.
- 2024 Snitzel colt: A Victoria Racing Club report carrying Racing and Sports coverage said Winx foaled the colt in November 2024. It attributed to co-owner Peter Tighe that the birth went smoothly and that the colt still needed checks.
- 2026 Too Darn Hot filly: Racing.com reported her birth on 23 September 2026 and called her Winx’s third surviving foal.
How the news was announced
The ownership group’s statement said: “It is with great sadness that the Kepitis, Tighe and Treweeke families wish to inform everyone that unfortunately overnight Winx lost her foal.” The statement was issued on behalf of the families and does not attribute the wording to an individual speaker.
