A later autopsy found that Patrice Miller, 71, died from a bear mauling at her home in Downieville, California. Officials identified her 2023 death as the state’s first documented fatal black-bear attack on a human; the initial account had suggested the bear entered after she died.

What happened to Patrice Miller?

Deputies found Miller dead inside her Downieville home on November 8, 2023, during a welfare check. In a November 14 release, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office said the preliminary investigation indicated she had died before a bear became involved, and that the cause of death remained under investigation.

That was a preliminary interpretation, not the final finding. In June 2024, reporting by the Associated Press cited Sheriff Mike Fisher’s account that an autopsy found Miller died from a bear mauling, described as a swipe and bite to the neck area. The autopsy report itself was not reviewed for this article.

What changed in the investigation?

Authorities later reported that the bear had been trapped and euthanized, and DNA testing confirmed that it was responsible for Miller’s death. The autopsy and DNA findings are reported through news coverage citing officials; the underlying forensic and laboratory reports were not reviewed.

  1. Remove food attractants from around the home.
  2. Use bear-proof containers for garbage.
  3. Do not feed wildlife.
