Caitlyn felt intimidated by Tater Tot’s size and scarred appearance, but the dog approached her, brushed against her legs, and settled in her lap. She brought him home—and kept him when her original plan to adopt him for a friend fell through. The account, published by iHeartDogs on October 6, 2026, describes a wary dog gradually adjusting to a home, not a proven case of abuse or a professional behavior assessment.
Why Caitlyn brought Tater Tot home
According to iHeartDogs, Tater Tot was in a Mississippi rescue and had heartworm, was underweight, and had visible scars. Caitlyn initially adopted him for a friend who was training for the Navy. They planned to move to Florida together, but that plan did not work out. Caitlyn decided to keep Tater Tot herself.
She was nervous about his size and appearance. The report says he approached her, brushed against her legs, and sat in her lap. That first encounter did not mean he was immediately comfortable in every situation: the same account describes him as fearful of people and objects at first, and says he flinched or ran when Caitlyn lifted something large or made a loud noise.
What the story says about his adjustment
The report says Tater Tot took time to settle in and later became more comfortable around strangers. It also says he disliked tile and wood floors, and that Caitlyn chose a carpeted home after moving. She stopped taking him to dog parks after other visitors reportedly called him aggressive and left.

Those details are the outlet’s account, not a clinical assessment. The article does not establish a bite history or confirm that Tater Tot was aggressive. It speculates that his fears could reflect past abuse, but his history is uncertain; the scars and fear responses do not prove what happened to him before rescue.
Fear is not the same as aggression
A fearful dog may try to get away. The ASPCA notes that a dog who is cornered or trapped may react aggressively. That general guidance helps explain why giving a worried dog room matters, but it cannot diagnose Tater Tot from a story. Avoid forcing a dog into greetings or other interactions to see whether it will “get over” its fear.

Its adoption guidance also advises not forcing interactions with people or other pets. These are general transition suggestions, not a description of the specific plan Caitlyn used.
When to seek professional help
If a dog’s distress is severe or there is a risk of injury to the dog, people, or other animals, the ASPCA recommends consulting a qualified animal behavior professional. A veterinary professional can help determine whether a veterinary behavior referral is appropriate. When choosing support, look for relevant experience with fear-related cases and humane, reward-based methods. The ASPCA says it supports training grounded in how animals learn and in “kindness and respect for both the pet and the guardian,” and opposes equipment that causes physical discomfort or undue anxiety.

The ASPCA’s 2024 annual report says its Behavioral Rehabilitation Center worked with more than 30 evidence-based behavior modification protocols to help severely fearful dogs. That is context about the center’s program, not a statistic about Tater Tot or a promise about how quickly any individual dog will change.

iHeartDogs reports that Caitlyn later adopted a second dog, Sweet Pea, and that the two dogs nap and cuddle together. The story offers a hopeful account of one adoption, but it does not establish that every fearful dog will adjust in the same way or on the same timetable.
