Cats.com lists 88 countries and counts currently homed domestic cats—not feral, stray, or other unhomed cats. A separate 2025 estimate from World Population Review puts the worldwide total at 353.3 million, but that figure is a publisher’s estimate, not a standardized global census.
Cat population by country: leading estimates
The figures below are estimates from World Population Review’s 2025 country table, shown on its 2026 page. They provide a dated snapshot distinct from Cats.com’s current table, which does not state a clear reference year.
| Rank among countries listed here | Country | Estimated cats |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | United States | 74.2 million |
| 2 | China | 53.1 million |
| 3 | Russia | 23.1 million |
| 4 | Germany | 15.2 million |
| 5 | France | 14.9 million |
| 6 | Brazil | 13 million |
World Population Review reports 353.3 million cats worldwide for 2025. The available information does not establish that every country’s estimate uses the same collection method, scope, or reference date, so the total should be read as that publisher’s estimate rather than a definitive count.
Which country has the most cats?
In Cats.com’s current ranking, the United States is first, China second, and Russia third. The same table displays 74.2 million cats for the United States, 53.1 million for China, and 23.1 million for Russia. These are the figures shown in the current table; Cats.com does not provide a clear reference year for them. The table covers 88 countries, not every country or territory. What do country cat populations count?
Cats.com defines its figures as currently homed pet domestic cats and excludes feral, stray, and other unhomed cats. Its ranking therefore is not a count of every cat living in each country. Cats.com says its human population figures come from the World Bank’s SP.POP.TOTL series; when a selected year is unavailable, it uses the latest prior year. This matters for the human-to-cat ratios because the human denominator may come from a different year than the cat estimate.
Pet and feral-cat estimates should not be silently combined. For example, an Australian government source gives a 5.3 million pet-cat estimate for 2022 while discussing feral-cat estimates that vary with rainfall. That country-specific example illustrates a distinction in scope; it does not provide a basis for comparing Australian figures with all-country estimates. Australian Government information on feral cats.
Total cats and cats per person answer different questions
A country’s total is not the same as its prevalence of cats relative to its human population. Cats.com lists 4.6 people per cat for the United States and 145.1 people per cat for India. Those are the ratios displayed by the source, and they should not be mistaken for cat totals or interpreted as perfectly synchronized measurements: the human denominators may use different years where the selected World Bank year is unavailable. A populous country can have a large total while having fewer cats per person.
The United Nations’ World Population Prospects 2024 is a human-population estimates and projections series covering 237 countries or areas; it is not a cat-count source and does not validate cat estimates. UN World Population Prospects 2024.

How to read the rankings
- Check the population being counted. Cats.com’s ranking is for homed pet cats, not all domestic and unowned cats combined.
- Check the reference year. World Population Review labels its figures as 2025 estimates; Cats.com’s current table does not clearly specify a year.
- Keep totals separate from ratios. A total ranks the number of cats; a people-per-cat ratio compares cats with the human population.
- Treat international comparisons as estimates. The available figures do not establish a single harmonized method or common reference date for every country.
