A camera trap has photographed a rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) in Madhya Pradesh’s Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve (VDTR)—the first documented visual record of the species in that reserve. The photograph was captured on March 12, 2024, during a survey by the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department and WWF-India and reported in 2026.

The headline needs a geographic correction: this was not the first camera-trap photograph of a rusty-spotted cat anywhere in India. Earlier Indian records exist. The new finding is a reserve-level first for VDTR.

There is an important qualification to the headline: this was not the first camera-trap or photographic record of a rusty-spotted cat anywhere in India. Earlier Indian records exist, including a reported photographic record from Maharashtra. The significance of the new image is that it documents the species in VDTR for the first time.

What the camera trap recorded

The animal was photographed at a camera-trap station in the reserve’s Dongargaon Range. Researchers identified it from visible features associated with the rusty-spotted cat, including:

  • a short head and short, rounded ears;
  • large eyes;
  • reddish-brown facial streaks;
  • rusty-brown spots on the coat; and
  • a relatively bushy tail.

Rusty-spotted cats are elusive and are mainly active at night, so direct sightings are uncommon. A camera trap can document animals that would be easy for people to miss, particularly in dense vegetation, scrub, or rocky terrain.

How the survey found the cat

The survey was not designed specifically to search for rusty-spotted cats. Its principal purpose was part of India’s All India Tiger Estimation effort. However, the same camera traps recorded other mammals moving through the reserve, producing additional information about VDTR’s wildlife community.

According to the published scientific account, the survey divided the sampled landscape into 2-square-kilometre grid cells. Paired cameras were deployed across 221 cells, covering approximately 442 square kilometres. The record from Dongargaon therefore came from a systematic wildlife survey rather than an unverified sighting.

Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve covers about 2,339 square kilometres and is described in the scientific record as Madhya Pradesh’s largest tiger reserve. Finding a species that had not previously been visually documented there adds to the known mammal diversity of the reserve.

What is a rusty-spotted cat?

The rusty-spotted cat is a small wild cat native to South Asia. Current taxonomic references place Prionailurus rubiginosus in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It is widely described as one of the world’s smallest wild cats, although its exact ranking against other small species can depend on how body size is measured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its compact body is usually reddish-grey or brownish, with darker rusty spots and markings. The large eyes, rounded ears, small head, and tail give it a distinctive appearance. It is much smaller than familiar big cats such as leopards and tigers, but it is a true wild felid—not a domestic cat or a feral cat.

The species has been recorded in a range of environments, including:

  • dry deciduous forest;
  • tropical thorn forest;
  • scrub and open forest;
  • rocky areas; and
  • other mixed habitats.

Its ability to use more open and varied habitats may help explain why it appears in landscapes that are not exclusively dense forest. That does not make it easy to study: its small size, nocturnal habits, and secretive behaviour make camera trapping especially valuable.

Why this is not India’s first rusty-spotted cat photograph

The phrase “caught on camera for the first time in India” is too broad if it is read as a national first. Rusty-spotted cats had already been photographed or recorded by camera traps in other parts of the country before the VDTR observation. A previous photographic record was reported from the Thane Forest Division in Maharashtra, and additional records have come from Indian protected areas.

India-wide camera-trap research conducted through the national tiger-estimation framework has also found rusty-spotted cats across a substantial area of India’s tiger landscapes. That research reported relatively high occupancy in mixed deciduous forests.

The most accurate interpretation is therefore:

The VDTR camera-trap image is a new reserve-level record, not the first evidence that rusty-spotted cats occur in India.

What the photograph tells us—and what it does not

The image confirms that at least one rusty-spotted cat was present at the camera-trap location in Dongargaon on March 12, 2024. It expands the documented mammal fauna of Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve and gives researchers a basis for asking further questions about the species there.

One photograph cannot establish:

  • how many rusty-spotted cats live in the reserve;
  • whether the photographed animal is male or female;
  • the animal’s age;
  • whether it is a permanent resident;
  • whether the species is breeding in VDTR; or
  • whether the reserve contains a viable, long-term population.

Those questions require repeated detections, broader sampling, and studies of habitat use, behaviour, reproduction, and population structure. The authors of the reserve record specifically called for additional research into the cat’s behaviour and conservation needs.

Why the record matters for conservation

Small wild cats can be overlooked when conservation attention focuses on tigers, leopards, and other larger predators. A reserve-level record helps reveal which less conspicuous species share the landscape and may guide future monitoring.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are recognised threats to rusty-spotted cats. Even where the species can use scrub, open forest, or agricultural edges, fragmented habitat can isolate animals, reduce shelter and prey, and increase contact with roads and people.

In India, the rusty-spotted cat receives the highest level of protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. That legal protection underscores that the cat should be treated as protected wildlife, not as an animal to capture, keep, or handle.

The VDTR record should be viewed as an important data point rather than proof of a population recovery. Its greatest value may be as a starting point for more targeted surveys. Repeated camera-trap detections could help determine whether the species is widespread in the reserve, concentrated in particular habitats, or represented by only occasional visitors.

How researchers identify small wild cats

When a camera trap captures a small, partially obscured animal, identification depends on several features considered together. Coat colour and spot pattern are useful, but they should be assessed alongside head shape, ear shape, eye size, tail form, body proportions, location, and habitat.

An Indian mammal field guide can help wildlife enthusiasts compare the rusty-spotted cat with other small cats found in the region. A guide is most useful when it includes range maps, diagnostic markings, scale or size information, and notes on similar-looking species. It should not be treated as evidence that a particular book contains the VDTR image or the 2026 report.

Why camera traps are useful

Camera traps use motion or heat sensors to photograph animals as they pass. They can operate at night, collect evidence without requiring an observer to remain nearby, and provide records of species that are difficult to see directly.

In professional surveys, camera placement, paired-camera arrangements, grid design, sampling duration, data management, and species identification all affect the quality of the results. A consumer wildlife camera may be useful for observing animals on private land where it is legal and appropriate, but it is not equivalent to a coordinated reserve-wide survey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anyone considering a wildlife camera should obtain permission before placing equipment on protected land, respect local forest regulations, avoid baiting or disturbing animals, and never use a camera to approach or expose a den. The purpose of camera trapping is to observe wildlife with as little interference as possible.

The broader takeaway

The rusty-spotted cat has not newly appeared in India. What is new is the documented record from Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve. That distinction matters because accurate geographic wording prevents a reserve-level discovery from being mistaken for a national first.

The photograph also demonstrates why broad biodiversity surveys matter. A survey aimed primarily at tigers produced evidence about a far smaller and more secretive predator. Continued monitoring will be needed to learn whether VDTR supports a resident population and which habitats are most important to it.

For now, the camera-trap image provides a carefully defined but valuable result: one of South Asia’s smallest wild cats has been visually documented in a major Madhya Pradesh tiger reserve for the first time.

The Bottom Line

The rusty-spotted cat was photographed for the first time in Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve—not for the first time anywhere in India. The March 12, 2024 camera-trap image expands the reserve’s known mammal record, but further surveys are needed before researchers can determine whether VDTR supports a resident or breeding population.
