The figures and reactions below are those reported at the time—not a current tally or a scientific count.
What happened at Coral Bay?
PerthNow reporter Rachel Fenner reported on 26 October 2023 that travel bloggers Chloe Peters and Harrison Davis had posted TikTok footage of themselves on a Coral Bay beach amid what the story described as hundreds of flies. The video’s audio caption read: “We heard the flies were bad in Western Australia but this is next level.” PerthNow’s report
PerthNow said the bloggers’ video had more than 2.5 million views on Thursday, 26 October 2023. The story also described a separate video by a Canadian expat who had been living in Western Australia for about two and a half months; it reported that video had more than 100,000 views. These are view counts reported in 2023, not current totals.
What did the visitors say about the flies?
Peters told news.com.au, as quoted by PerthNow, that flies at Exmouth were “a little bit hectic” but manageable, while a day trip to Coral Bay was “next level.” She added: “It was insane the amount of flies.” Those comments describe the visitors’ experience; they are not measurements of fly abundance.

What species were in the video—and why were they there?
The PerthNow story does not identify the insects, provide a scientific count or sampling method, or establish why they were concentrated at the beach. WA Health notes that March flies can occur anywhere in Western Australia and are more common in warmer climates, but that general information does not show that the Coral Bay insects were March flies. WA Health’s March-fly guidance does not identify the flies in the footage either.

- Following the product label and reapplying after swimming if the label or circumstances require it.
- Considering a head net where appropriate.
WA Health’s broader personal-repellent guidance also lists topical lotion, spray or gel containing DEET, picaridin, or OLE/PMD as recommended categories, with directions to follow the product label. Its mosquito-specific protection-duration figures should not be treated as estimates of how long protection lasts against flies. WA Health’s personal insect-repellent guidance
The department says broadscale pesticide applications are generally not feasible for March flies because breeding areas can be extensive and adult flies can travel long distances. That applies to its March-fly guidance, not a confirmed identification of the Coral Bay insects. WA Health’s March-fly guidance
