Visitors to Yanchep National Park may get a glimpse of a joey peeping from its mother’s pouch at the Koala Boardwalk, but sightings are not guaranteed. The “first in 15 years” joey is Djilba, born to Miffy and Louie in 2025. A separate joey, born to Poppy and Franklin Doogsie in 2026, is now the park’s second recent birth.
Which joey was the first born in 15 years?
Djilba was the first koala joey born at Yanchep National Park in 15 years. Its parents are Miffy and Louie. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions reported in 2025 that the young koala had begun emerging from Miffy’s pouch while she fed, giving visitors occasional glimpses.

Djilba was named in October 2025 after the Noongar season associated in the naming announcement with conception and new life. At a health check reported on 30 June 2026, the WA Parks Foundation said Djilba was 14 months old and weighed 4.5 kilograms. It also reported that a Perth Zoo veterinary assessment found Djilba in excellent body condition, with no health concerns detected at that time.
Is there another new joey at Yanchep?
Yes. An August 2026 Government of Western Australia announcement reported a second joey in two years, born to Poppy and Franklin Doogsie. The announcement estimated its birth around mid-March 2026 and described it as about five months old. It said the joey had begun peeping from Poppy’s pouch during feeding.

This is a different animal from Djilba, the joey behind the 15-year milestone. The 2026 announcement invited visitors to vote on four names for the newer joey, with the winning name due to be announced after the spring school holidays.
Where and when can visitors look for a joey?
The koala colony is viewed from the Koala Boardwalk at Yanchep National Park. The cited government announcements give daily access and identify 8am to 4:30pm as the best viewing period. The joeys have been seen peeping out while their mothers feed, but emergence from a pouch is intermittent; a visit during those hours cannot guarantee a sighting.

Koalas have been part of Yanchep National Park since 1938. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and the WA Government describe the colony as a satellite breeding population that supports wider conservation efforts, with support through the Zoos and Aquarium Association. The announcements do not quantify the colony’s contribution to wild koala population outcomes.
