The likely match is a video distributed in April 2024—but its original location and filmer remain unconfirmed.
The alligator gets partway up the fence, appears to haul its heavy body over with its claws and sheer leverage, makes a noisy struggle of it—and then tumbles awkwardly onto the other side. It is less a graceful climb than a determined, slightly chaotic negotiation with an obstacle.

The strongest public match is a video listed by RM Videos on April 29, 2024, under the title Alligator Struggles to Climb Over Fence. The Pet Collective published a closely matching version the following day with the caption “Alligator Caught Struggling to Climb Over Fence.” Those listings describe a homeowner filming the attempt, but they do not establish the original filmer’s full name, the precise location, or the date the footage was recorded.

What happens in the clip
This is not a clean leap over a low barrier. The alligator appears to get its front end up and then struggles to bring the rest of its body across. Its claws, body weight and leverage against the fence seem to do most of the work. After losing control while crossing, it rolls or tumbles down the far side.

The available description also says the animal makes noise during the attempt. It does not, however, independently verify the alligator’s size, its exact species beyond the common identification as an alligator, or whether it was injured, trapped or later assisted. There is no reliable basis for claiming that the animal was rescued or that the fence was in a particular city.
Can alligators really climb fences?
Yes—but the video should not be treated as proof that every alligator can easily scale every fence.
According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, alligators have sharp claws and powerful tails that can help push their bodies upward. Young alligators are particularly agile climbers. Adults have also been known to climb fences, including when trying to reach water or escape captivity.
That helps explain why the footage looks surprising without being impossible. An alligator’s body is long, low and heavily muscled, but it is not built like a climbing mammal. A fence can provide footholds and leverage, yet getting the animal’s entire body over the top may be difficult and awkward. The result can look exactly like this clip: a determined ascent followed by an uncontrolled flop.
Fence height and design matter, but no ordinary backyard barrier should be described as an absolute guarantee. UF/IFAS says that a fence intended to exclude alligators from a yard should be more than 4.5 feet high. It also cautions that low fences may not protect pets in areas where alligators occur.

Where was the alligator filmed?
The location of this 2024 clip is not confirmed by the available public metadata. Florida is a plausible general context because alligators are widespread there, but the video should not be labeled as a Florida or Jacksonville recording without confirmation from the original uploader or rights holder.
American alligators range across the southeastern United States, from the Carolinas to Texas and north to Arkansas. They may live around lakes, ponds, rivers, marshes, swamps and man-made canals. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says alligators occur in freshwater lakes, ponds, swamps and slow-moving rivers in all 67 Florida counties, with an estimated statewide population of about 1.3 million alligators of all sizes.

Several alligator-fence clips have circulated online, and their details are easy to blend together. They are separate incidents:
- April 2024: The likely match for this story is the awkward struggle-and-tumble video distributed by RM Videos and republished by The Pet Collective. Its original location and filmer are not confirmed in the available listing information.
- August 2019: News4Jax reported on a large alligator scaling a fence at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, falling over the other side and continuing away. That is not established as the footage in this story.
- March 2023: A Storyful listing showed a large alligator bending a metal fence at the Coral Creek Club in Charlotte County while forcing its way through. This was a different animal, setting and outcome.
In particular, “Jacksonville” belongs to the documented 2019 report—not automatically to the 2024 clip. Likewise, claims that this animal was eight feet long or that it came from a separate Fort Myers incident should not be attached to the video without evidence.
What to do if you see an alligator near a fence
Keep your distance and let the animal move. Do not approach it for a closer recording, try to help it over the fence, corner it, touch it or feed it. An alligator that looks clumsy can still move quickly over a short distance, and attempting to block its path can make the situation more dangerous.

Florida FWC recommends:
- Keeping a safe distance from alligators.
- Never feeding an alligator. Feeding can reduce its natural wariness and teach it to associate people with food.
- Keeping pets leashed and away from the water’s edge.
- Keeping children away from the water’s edge and supervising them closely.
- Avoiding swimming or wading where large alligators are likely, especially at dusk or at night.
If an alligator poses a threat to people, pets or property in Florida, contact the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). For an immediate emergency, use the appropriate emergency service. Outside Florida, contact the relevant state wildlife agency rather than attempting to handle the animal yourself.
Can you license the video?
RM Videos’ listing for the matching clip advertises licensing. The Pet Collective published a closely matching version and identifies itself as owned by Jukin Media, which also provides a relevant lead for rights and creator-submission questions. That does not prove either distributor owns the original footage. Anyone planning to use the clip commercially should check the current rights holder, licensing terms, required credit and permitted uses before embedding, downloading or republishing it.
Storyful is another possible source for comparable licensed wildlife footage, but its documented alligator-fence listing concerns the separate 2023 Coral Creek Club incident—not the likely 2024 clip described here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A small alligator-themed extra
If the video inspires a less alarming souvenir, an alligator plush toy is a harmless novelty gift for an alligator fan. It is not wildlife equipment, a pet-safety product or a replica of the individual animal in the footage; product availability and pricing can change.
The takeaway
The fence attempt is funny because it looks so effortful: the alligator gets up, wrestles its body across and finishes with an undignified tumble. But the clip also shows why people should not underestimate these animals. Alligators can use claws, muscle and leverage to negotiate some barriers, and a fence is not an invitation to get closer. Enjoy the awkward athleticism from a safe distance—and leave the real-life obstacle course to the alligator.
