Young activists help animals in practical ways: volunteering with shelters, educating their communities, organizing campaigns, supporting conservation, and encouraging changes in public behavior or policy. The best approach depends on which animals need help and what a young person can realistically do; the number of people reached by a campaign does not, by itself, show how many animals benefited.

What young animal activists do

Animal activism is not limited to protests. It can mean hands-on support for animals, public education, fundraising, community projects, or advocacy aimed at decision-makers and businesses. Youth organizations illustrate how varied that work can be:

  • Support shelters and stray animals. United Voices for Animals (UVFA) describes itself as a youth-led nonprofit founded in 2025. It focuses on stray animals and shelters through volunteering, fundraising, community engagement, and awareness. Its account of growth from one city to students in multiple states is the organization’s own report. UVFA’s website
  • Build local communities and campaigns. Denmark’s Dyrenes Alliance says it has united young people since 2008. Its listed activities include local chapters, demonstrations, events, workshops, debates, film screenings, plant-based initiatives, and campaigns. The group also describes work with companies on chicken-welfare commitments and cage-free campaigns; those are its own accounts of its advocacy. Dyrenes Alliance
  • Teach others about wildlife. An Animal Welfare Institute profile published in 2017 says siblings Carter and Olivia Ries founded One More Generation in 2009, when they were 8 and 7, to educate people about endangered species. The profile describes a K–12 pangolin-awareness art campaign and a rhino-letter campaign. These are historical examples, not a statement about the organization’s current activities. How education and communication can help

Young advocates can share information through conversations, school projects, public events, social media, or interactive demonstrations. In an article published January 5, 2026, PETA India described youth outreach it carried out during 2025 at colleges and festivals. Its reported activities included virtual reality, interactive activities, visual materials, leaflets, conversations, vegan food, badges, wristbands, and a pledge QR code; students could also join PETA Youth’s Street Team. These are examples of one organization’s outreach, not a measure of the impact of youth activism overall. PETA India’s account of its 2025 outreach

Public communication can also extend an individual’s advocacy beyond a local group. In a December 11, 2019, release, PETA named Genesis Butler its Young Animal Activist of the Year at age 13 and said she had given a TEDx talk at age 10 and used social media to advocate for animals. Those ages and the award refer to the 2019 account, not her current age. PETA’s 2019 announcement

Examples of youth advocacy in action

Letters and awareness campaigns for wildlife

The Animal Welfare Institute’s 2017 profile says Carter and Olivia Ries collected more than 10,000 letters from children around the world asking South Africa’s president to stop black rhino poaching, then delivered the letters to the government in 2013. The figure describes letters collected, not a verified reduction in poaching or a count of animals saved. Animal Welfare Institute’s profile

Outreach aimed at everyday choices

PETA India’s account of its 2025 college and festival activities shows one route: bring information and interactive experiences to places where young people already gather, then invite them to learn more or take a pledge. An organization-reported reach figure offers a sense of scale, but it cannot establish that participants changed their behavior or that animals experienced a lasting benefit.

Advice from young advocates

In the 2017 Animal Welfare Institute profile, Aidan Bodeo-Lomicky, then 17 and founder of V-log, advised young people to “find something that makes you want to drop everything and go help it.” Thomas Ponce, then 16 and founder of Lobby for Animals, said: “Do your research, formulate a plan and put it into action.” These are recommendations attributed to the speakers by the profile, not guarantees that a particular campaign will succeed. Choose an activity that fits the animals and the goal

Before joining or starting a project, match the work to the need it is intended to address. Shelter volunteering and wildlife education, for example, support different animals and aim for different kinds of change.

Approach Possible focus What to check
Volunteer with a shelter or community group Companion animals, stray animals, or shelter support Ask the local organization what tasks are appropriate for young volunteers and what supervision is required.
Organize a school or community project Public awareness, fundraising, or a specific animal-related concern Set a clear goal and identify how you will know whether the project helped.
Support public education Helping people learn about animal welfare or conservation Use reliable information and distinguish attendance or reach from changes in knowledge or behavior.
Join a campaign or contact decision-makers Policy, public behavior, or business practices Check what change the campaign seeks and whether the organization reports a concrete outcome.
Help make plant-based choices more accessible Food choices and related advocacy Choose an approach that suits your community and focus on practical, respectful communication.

Availability varies by location and organization. Check directly with a local shelter, school, campus group, or youth network before assuming it accepts volunteers or has an active chapter nearby.

How to judge whether an effort is helping

Campaigns often report different kinds of results, and those measures are not interchangeable. Activities completed, people reached, letters collected, policy decisions, and direct animal care each tell you something different.

  • Look for the stated outcome. Is the aim to care for animals directly, inform people, change behavior, influence policy, or support conservation?
  • Separate participation from impact. PETA’s 2025 annual review says its Abduction virtual-reality experience reached more than 1,600 students on 18 campuses over 18 weeks. That is PETA’s reported program reach, not an independently evaluated result or a count of animal lives saved. PETA’s 2025 annual review
  • Attribute organizational claims. An organization can describe its own activities and goals, but its account should not be mistaken for an independent evaluation of effectiveness.
  • Ask what changed for animals. Where possible, look for evidence beyond an event count or audience size, such as a documented improvement in care or a confirmed policy change.

There is no single, independently verified total that captures the impact of young animal activists across these different kinds of work. Comparing unlike claims or adding them together would not establish an overall number of animals helped.

Getting started safely and usefully

  1. Pick a specific concern. Decide whether you want to help animals near you, support shelters, address a wildlife issue, or work on another animal-welfare concern.
  2. Find a suitable local route. Contact a shelter, school, campus group, or youth organization to ask what activities are available and whether they are appropriate for your age and schedule.
  3. Agree on a manageable task. A clear, limited commitment—such as helping with an approved event or preparing an educational project—can be easier to sustain than an ambitious campaign without a plan.
  4. Check the facts and the goal. Use credible information, understand what change the group is seeking, and decide what evidence would show progress.
  5. Review what happened. Record the activity and any outcome separately. For example, note how many people attended an event, then distinguish that count from any demonstrated change in knowledge, behavior, policy, or animal care.
