A camera drop by underwater filmmaker and YouTuber Barny Dillarstone produced footage of an unidentified ray at about 200 meters (656 feet) in the Bali Sea. The animal may be unusual or locally unrecorded, but the available reporting does not confirm that it is a new species. The distinction matters: an intriguing video is not the same as a scientific description.
What did the camera capture?
PetaPixel’s November 25, 2025 report says Dillarstone deployed a baited camera rig in the Bali Sea, Indonesia, at approximately 200 meters (656 feet) over two consecutive nights. The footage included nocturnal marine animals and a ray described as a stingaree. Marine biologists consulted by Dillarstone could not identify the animal. He put the uncertainty plainly: “So what species is this one? The answer is we have no idea.” (PetaPixel)
Dillarstone also said, “Stingarees aren’t really supposed to be in Indonesia.” That is his characterization, as quoted by PetaPixel—not independent confirmation that the ray falls outside a known species range.
Does the footage show a new species?
Not on the evidence available in these reports. The footage shows a ray that the consulted biologists could not identify; that leaves open several possibilities, including an uncommon sighting, a species not previously recorded in that location, or an animal that has not yet been formally described. It does not establish which explanation is correct.

A first unusual sighting, a first documented record from a particular place, and a species new to science are different claims. Confirming a new species normally requires expert examination and a formal taxonomic description. No accepted species name or formal description for this ray is reported by the sources here, so “never-before-seen” should be understood as a description of the footage’s novelty, not a verified scientific finding.
How is the ray story different from the houndshark report?
Digital Camera World separately reported footage from Indonesia involving an Indonesian houndshark said to have been filmed alive in the wild for the first time, as well as a giant stingaree. Its article identifies an Insta360 Ace Pro 2 as the center of the rig. The available accounts do not establish whether that houndshark footage came from the same deployment as PetaPixel’s unidentified-ray encounter. (Digital Camera World)

What equipment was used?
Digital Camera World describes the reported setup as centered on an Insta360 Ace Pro 2, with a weighted cage, forward-facing light, bait, and retrieval rope. That description is of a complete deployment rig, not evidence that the action camera alone can be used at the reported depth. The reports do not specify the enclosure’s pressure rating, camera settings, or safe deployment limits; they therefore do not support using this account as a build guide.
