Keep dogs away from barbecue foods that contain toxic ingredients, are excessively fatty or salty, or come with bones and other swallowable hazards. Onion and garlic can hide in rubs and sauces; cooked bones, corn cobs, skewers, and fruit pits can injure or block the digestive tract. If your dog may have eaten a hazardous food or object, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.
10 barbecue foods and hazards to keep away from dogs
These foods do not all cause harm in the same way. Some contain ingredients that can poison a dog; others can trigger digestive illness or cause choking, injury, or intestinal obstruction. The risk depends on what was eaten and the individual dog, so this is a warning list—not a dose chart.
1. Onions and garlic, including powders
Onions and garlic can cause gastrointestinal irritation and damage red blood cells. They may be mixed into barbecue rubs, marinades, sauces, or condiments, so check ingredient labels instead of judging a food by its appearance. The ASPCA’s barbecue guidance and its people-foods hazard list identify alliums as a concern.
2. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins are associated with kidney damage in dogs. Keep them, and foods containing them, out of reach; the ASPCA’s list of foods to avoid includes both.

Why barbecue hazards need different responses
- Ingredients mixed into food: Onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, and xylitol may be hard to spot in a recipe. Check ingredients and treat a suspected exposure as a reason to call for professional advice.
- Rich or salty food: Fatty foods may cause digestive upset or pancreatitis; excess salt can cause sodium poisoning.
- Objects swallowed with food or thrown away: Bones, cobs, skewers, and pits can choke, injure, or obstruct even though they are not toxic ingredients.
The sources do not establish one safe amount for every dog, food, or preparation, or a universal severity ranking. Do not rely on an online dose estimate to decide whether a suspected ingestion is harmless.
Quick Recap
What to do if your dog eats a barbecue hazard
- Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. The ASPCA advises immediate contact if a pet may have ingested a potentially toxic item. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
- Share what you know. Tell the professional what your dog ate, how much may be missing, and when the ingestion happened. Keep the package or ingredient label available if there is one.
- Follow professional instructions. Do not induce vomiting or try a home treatment unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to do so.
How to prevent a dog from raiding the cookout
- Keep food, drinks, plates, and skewers out of reach while people are cooking and eating.
- Check rubs, sauces, and packaged foods for onion, garlic, or xylitol.
- Put bones, cobs, pits, and scraps into a securely closed trash receptacle. The ASPCA recommends securely closed trash receptacles to keep pets away from dangerous leftovers.
- If offering a dog a cookout bite, choose a plain option without bones, sauces, rubs, or hazardous seasoning. The AKC lists examples of human foods that may be safe for dogs, including zucchini, sweet potato, fish, shrimp, turkey, lean deboned pork, strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. A food that is suitable for some dogs may not suit every dog.
