The ten cat litter mats reviewed
1. Overall pick: Petlinks Purrfect Paws Cat Litter Mat
Cats.com’s top choice has a textured surface intended to spread a cat’s paws and help dislodge litter between the toes. The reviewer found it comfortable and easy to shake or vacuum. The page says it comes in two colors and three sizes. Its main limitation is the lack of raised sides, so urine can run off rather than stay contained.
2. Budget pick: Fresh Kitty Jumbo Foam Litter Mat
This lightweight foam mat is described as waterproof and soft, and it can be wiped or swept. It rolls up for emptying, but may bunch or move when vacuumed. It has no raised edge to catch liquid.

Cats.com says it collected the most litter among the mats tested. Its connected layers hold dry litter for emptying, but clumped litter can lodge in the holes. The reviewer says it is not designed for vacuuming or sweeping.

8. Another large-box option: The Original Gorilla Grip Litter Mat
Deep grooves and PVC fiber coils are intended to catch dry litter; the mat also has a water-resistant surface and textured backing. Clumped litter can stick in the coils, making cleanup harder, and the review says pellet litter may not be caught as effectively.

This mat is easy to sweep and vacuum on a hard-floor setting. Some litter may remain after shaking, and Cats.com reports that some reviewers found machine washing damaged the backing.
10. Value pick: Catit Cat Litter Mat
The review lists dimensions of 40 by 25 inches and reports that it was easy to vacuum and trapped litter without moisture passing through during its test. Scratching may unravel the material, and some cats may dislike the surface feel.

Measure the space and the cat’s landing area
Measure the floor area beside the litter box before choosing a size. Cats.com recommends a mat at least as long as the box and large enough for the cat to stand on with all four paws. A mat that only fits beneath the box may not catch litter from the cat’s first steps away from it.

Match the surface to the litter
Layered mats collect dry litter between their layers so it can be poured out; mesh, grooves, and textured surfaces work differently. Holes and fiber coils may retain clumps, and the review flags that pellet litter may not work as well with some coil designs. Consider the litter your household actually uses rather than assuming every surface traps every type equally well.
Choose a cleanup method you will use
Think about whether you want to vacuum, shake or pour dry litter back, wipe the surface, or machine wash the mat. These methods are not interchangeable: for example, Cats.com says the plush CatGuru mat is not suited to vacuuming, while the BlackHole mat is not designed for vacuuming or sweeping. Check the product’s own care guidance before washing.
Separate waterproof backing from liquid containment
Waterproof material does not necessarily keep urine on the mat. A raised edge or absorbent surface may help, but the review notes runoff from mats without raised sides and possible escape through the PetFusion mat’s side spout. If liquid containment is important, consider where the box sits and how liquid could reach the floor, not only whether the mat is labeled waterproof.

Factor in comfort and wear
A cat has to walk across the mat for it to help. Surface feel is individual, and Cats.com notes that a texture a person considers soft may not suit every cat. Scratching, backing wear, and odors are also relevant; the review specifically flags possible unraveling on the Catit mat and possible backing damage with machine washing for some Drymate reviewers.
