10 Ways to Turn Old Furniture Into a Tortoise Enclosure (Dresser, TV Stand, Bookshelf)

Old furniture can provide an enclosure’s starting frame, but only a measured, stable conversion with suitable space, substrate containment, airflow, heat, and UVB can serve as a tortoise habitat.

You can reuse a dresser, TV stand, bookshelf, wardrobe, or large drawer as the starting structure for an indoor tortoise enclosure—but the furniture itself does not make a suitable habitat. First confirm the finished footprint, wall height, stability, substrate containment, ventilation, and space for species-appropriate heat and UVB. Then choose a conversion that can meet those needs and be adjusted as the tortoise grows.

Check whether the furniture can become a suitable enclosure

Start with the tortoise, not the furniture. Species, age, size, and growth affect how much floor space and what conditions an enclosure needs. Measure the usable floor area after removing shelves, dividers, or drawers; decorative exterior dimensions are not the same as open living space.

The Tortoise Table names old bookcases turned on their backs with shelves removed, wardrobes, and large drawers as possible indoor homes. It gives an open-top table of about 91 × 61 cm (3 × 2 ft) as a minimum example for a hatchling, with juveniles needing more space; it also notes that larger tortoises need larger enclosures and may require additional heat and light. These examples do not establish that a particular dresser or TV stand is large enough. The Tortoise Table’s indoor-housing guidance is a starting point, not a furniture-size certification.

For a separate species-specific reference, the RSPCA sheet covers spur-thighed, Hermann’s, marginated, and Horsfield’s tortoises. It gives a shed indoor-space example of at least 180 × 120 cm for one tortoise, approximately 50 mm minimum substrate depth, daytime temperatures of 20–25°C and 15°C at night, and a 35°C basking spot, alongside full-spectrum UVB lighting. These figures belong to that guidance and its named species and context; they are not universal specifications for every tortoise or furniture conversion. Read the RSPCA tortoise care sheet and consult species-specific welfare advice for your animal.

10 furniture conversions to consider

These are design approaches, not a ranking or assurance that any one furniture type is appropriate. Assess each finished build against the same welfare and measurement checks above.

1. Turn a bookshelf onto its back

Remove all shelves and dividers, then use the former back as the base and the bookcase sides as walls. The Tortoise Table specifically lists this kind of reuse. Check that the back panel is sturdy enough to support the finished setup and that its usable footprint suits the tortoise; thin decorative backing may need a stronger base.

2. Convert a wide, low dresser

Remove drawers and any interior rails that obstruct the floor. A broad dresser can provide a rectangular base, but measure the clear space inside the frame rather than counting the overhanging top. Protect the base and lower walls with a fitted liner if needed to contain substrate and protect the furniture.

3. Use a large, deep drawer as a small enclosure

A large drawer is among the furniture forms named by The Tortoise Table. It may be practical as a contained structure only if its interior footprint is adequate for the animal and its walls allow safe ventilation and equipment placement. Do not assume a drawer is suitable because it is deep or easy to move.

4. Adapt a wardrobe carcass

A wardrobe offers tall side panels that can become walls when converted into a low, open-top layout. Remove internal rails and shelves, secure the structure against tipping or racking, and confirm that the new base is both level and load-bearing. A tall enclosure is not a substitute for sufficient floor area.

5. Rework a TV stand into a single open bay

Remove doors, shelves, and cable panels that divide or close off the interior. Use the remaining outer frame only if it creates enough continuous floor space and allows air movement. Many stands are too shallow or have narrow compartments; do not count separate cubbies as one usable habitat unless the tortoise can move freely between them and the setup remains practical to clean.

6. Combine a low cabinet and a reinforced base

A low cabinet can form the walls while a continuous, securely supported panel creates the floor. This approach can address a weak or segmented cabinet base, but the added panel must be stable and must not reduce the usable area below what the species and animal need. Line the base and lower walls where required to contain substrate.

7. Join matching furniture sections into one run

Two compatible low units may be arranged as one longer enclosure if the shared boundary can be removed and the joined structure is stable. A divider that remains in place can restrict movement and make the apparent combined footprint misleading. Check seams and corners for gaps, weak joints, and places substrate can escape.

8. Build a removable inner tray for a cabinet

A fitted tray can help protect a furniture base and simplify removal for cleaning. Its walls must contain the planned substrate, and the tray must not make the interior too small or interfere with the warm-to-cool layout. A liner is a practical option for covering the base and several inches of side wall above the substrate depth, as described by The Tortoise Table.

9. Use a low bookcase on its feet as a frame

If a bookcase is wide and low enough, remove shelves and use its sides and ends as the enclosure walls without turning it over. The shelves must not remain as ledges or barriers that reduce floor area. Secure the frame and inspect the exposed edges, joints, and backing before adding substrate.

10. Make a modular enclosure from compatible panels

Salvaged cabinet sides, a solid base, and removable wall sections can be assembled into a configurable frame. This can make later changes easier, but every joint must remain secure and the assembled footprint must meet the animal’s needs. Treat modularity as a construction convenience, not evidence of suitability.

Fit a liner and prepare the interior

Where the furniture needs protection or substrate containment, line the base and lower walls with a fitted, secure liner. The Tortoise Table advises lining the base and several inches of side wall, with the liner fitted above the substrate depth. Make the liner easy to inspect and clean, and ensure it cannot bunch up, expose gaps, or create a hazard for the tortoise. No particular material or brand is established as universally safe here.

Substrate choice depends on the tortoise and setup, so use species-specific care guidance rather than assuming one mix suits all. Tortoise Trust’s care guide warns against hemp, bark, commercial reptile sand, and wood chips, associating them with impaction or toxicity. Tortoise Trust’s indoor tortoise care guide gives its substrate advice; discuss an individual animal’s needs with a reptile-experienced veterinarian.

Plan heat, UVB, and airflow before adding the tortoise

Heat and UVB are functional requirements, not decorative additions. UVB supports vitamin D3 production and calcium absorption, as explained by The Tortoise Table’s UVB guidance. Choose lighting and heating equipment for the species and enclosure, and arrange the layout to provide a usable temperature gradient rather than heating the whole space to one reading.

Furniture conversion does not establish adequate ventilation or lighting by itself. Tortoise Trust reports very low air movement in the enclosed units it tested and argues that enclosed vivaria may provide inadequate ventilation and illumination; those findings concern its tested units, not every furniture build. Its article also cautions against assuming tortoises should live exclusively indoors. Read Tortoise Trust’s indoor accommodation discussion and evaluate the actual design and the tortoise’s wider housing plan.

Measure conditions before use

Do not judge safety from how warm a surface feels or from a single air-temperature reading. Tortoise Trust recommends accurate infrared, ambient, and contact-probe thermometers; measurements of substrate temperature at several locations; and checks across the warm-to-cool gradient after conditions have stabilized over hours. It warns that typical consumer “reptile” thermometers may be too inaccurate to rely on. Follow Tortoise Trust’s temperature-measurement guidance when commissioning the enclosure.

  1. Install the planned heat and UVB equipment securely, following the equipment maker’s directions and species-specific care advice.
  2. Allow the setup to run for hours so temperatures stabilize before relying on readings.
  3. Measure the basking area, ambient air, and substrate at multiple locations, including the warm and cool ends.
  4. Compare the readings with guidance for the tortoise’s species and age, and adjust the equipment or layout if the required gradient is not achieved.
  5. Recheck after changes to lamps, enclosure layout, substrate depth, or room conditions.

Decide whether the conversion is a no-go

Do not use the furniture if the finished design cannot provide enough usable floor space, stable walls, appropriate substrate containment, adequate airflow, safe equipment clearance, or measurable species-appropriate conditions. A structure that works for a hatchling may not remain appropriate as it grows. The RSPCA also notes that any indoor enclosure should be fit for purpose; its guidance should be read in the context of the species it covers rather than as blanket approval for furniture conversions.

Before committing, compare the completed layout with species-specific welfare guidance and ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian when the animal’s requirements are uncertain. Furniture reuse can reduce waste, but it cannot replace a suitable habitat plan.
