The most useful choice depends less on a product label than on where your cat already sleeps, whether they curl up or stretch out, and how easily they can get in and out. A bed can also combine formats: a window perch may be a hammock, and an orthopedic bed may be a flat mat.
Ten common types of cat beds
These names describe shapes and features, not strict standards; sellers may use them differently, and many beds fit more than one category.

1. Cushion or mat bed
A padded, open surface suits cats that sprawl or prefer an unobstructed place to rest. A mat can go on furniture or in a carrier, provided it fits without blocking the carrier’s opening. Check whether the cover or whole mat can be washed.
2. Bolster bed
This open bed has raised sides around some or all of its resting surface. Cats that curl up may lean against the edge, while the centre remains open. Make sure the sleeping area is large enough for your cat to settle comfortably.

3. Donut bed
A donut bed is typically round and cushioned, with a raised rim. It is one option for a cat that chooses soft, bordered places to rest. The shape alone does not establish that a bed will calm a cat or provide a therapeutic benefit.
4. Cave or igloo bed
This enclosed bed creates a covered retreat for a cat that seeks shelter or privacy. Keep it somewhere quiet and make sure the entrance is easy to reach and leave; a hideaway should not become a trapped or hard-to-access space.

5. Tent or hooded bed
A tent or hooded bed has a fabric cover over a resting area, offering more shelter than an open cushion. In appearance it may resemble a cave bed, but the distinction is not consistent across sellers. Look at the actual opening, structure and interior space rather than relying on the name.
6. Heated bed
An electrically heated bed provides active warmth for a cat that seeks a warm resting spot. Use a pet-specific product according to its instructions, inspect the cord and equipment, and stop using it if damaged. Retailer guidance advises against leaving a human heating pad in use for an unattended pet; this is a product-safety precaution, not a claim that heated beds treat illness.

7. Self-warming bed or pad
A self-warming pad has no powered heater: its materials reflect some of the cat’s body heat. It can be a portable layer for a familiar resting place, but it does not actively heat the cat or room.
8. Orthopedic or memory-foam bed
These beds use a thicker or foam-filled surface and are marketed for cushioning and support. The label does not mean the bed treats arthritis or pain. For an older cat or one with limited mobility, prioritize a low entry and a convenient location over extra thickness or a high-sided design.

9. Hammock bed
A hammock has a suspended or dipped sleeping surface. It may attach to cat furniture or form part of a window perch. Some elevated perches include a hammock-style dip that gives a cat a partly sheltered place to rest.

10. Window perch or elevated shelf bed
A raised shelf or window perch offers a resting place with a view. Choose a stable surface wide and long enough for your cat to stretch, and make sure it is reachable. Put it low or provide a ramp if a kitten, older cat or cat with limited mobility would otherwise need to jump.

How to choose a bed your cat can use
Start with your cat’s current habits rather than buying a bed based on its name. Cats Protection advises that a cat may ignore a new bed, even an expensive one; familiar comfort and placement can matter more than the purchase itself.
- Observe where your cat rests. Note whether the spot is open or covered, warm or cool, quiet or social, at floor level or raised, and whether your cat curls up or stretches out.
- Match the bed shape to that habit. Try an open mat for a cat that sprawls, a rimmed bed for one that chooses edges, or a covered bed for one that seeks a hideaway. A cat that likes high views may use a perch if it is safely accessible.
- Check entry and exit. Consider the height, opening and stability. For kittens, older cats and cats with limited mobility, keep resting places easy to reach; veterinary environmental guidance recommends relatively low perches or ramps for kittens and older cats with limited mobility.
- Think through warmth and cleaning. Decide whether an unheated pad is enough or whether an electrically heated product suits the situation. Check washing instructions and whether the bed’s size and cover will be practical to clean.
- Place it where your cat already likes to sleep. A familiar location can make a new bed less of a change. Cats Protection also suggests adding a familiar scent, such as bedding the cat already uses.
When health or mobility affects the choice
A bed’s marketing label is not a substitute for advice about a medical need. If illness, surgery or pain affects your cat’s climbing, resting position or bedding requirements, ask the treating veterinary team what arrangement is appropriate. The 2022 ISFM/AAFP veterinary-environment guidelines note that resting arrangements can depend on clinical status as well as temperament.
