How Tuxedo Cats Got Their Look—and What Their History Really Tells Us

Tuxedo cats are named for their black-and-white look, not a distinct breed. Here’s what coat biology and cultural history can—and can’t—tell us.

Tuxedo cats are domestic cats with dark pigmented coats and distinctive white markings—not a separate breed with a documented lineage. Their pattern has a biological basis, while the familiar name is a clothing analogy. The available sources do not establish when people first used the phrase “tuxedo cat” or identify a single origin story for it.

What is a tuxedo cat?

“Tuxedo” describes a look: a pigmented coat with white markings that can suggest a formal jacket. The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine’s coat-identification guide describes tuxedo coloration as white paws, chest, and belly, with optional white on the face. The amount and placement of white vary, so the label is a practical visual description rather than a rigid breed standard.

Coat terminology is not always consistent across organizations. The University of California, Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory notes that registries and associations may use different names for the same coat-color phenotype. A cat called a tuxedo in everyday conversation may therefore be classified using a broader pattern term elsewhere.

How tuxedo markings differ from other patterns

The University of Florida guide distinguishes tuxedo from several other patterns by the distribution of white:

  • Tuxedo: white on the paws, chest, and belly, sometimes also on the face.
  • Bicolor: a broader category for a coat with two colors; the guide describes a pattern with roughly half the coat white.
  • Van: mostly white, with color concentrated largely on the head and tail.
  • Mitted: white mainly on the paws.
  • Locket: a small white patch on the chest.
  • Harlequin: mostly white with larger patches of color.

These names help describe appearance; they do not, by themselves, establish a cat’s breed.

Is a tuxedo cat a breed?

No. “Tuxedo cat” is a coat-pattern label, not a breed designation. The pattern can appear in domestic cats of different backgrounds. A tuxedo’s markings alone do not identify a specific ancestry or breed lineage.

Why are black and white cats black and white?

Black-and-white cats are often described as bicolor or piebald. Their pigmented areas contain pigment-producing cells; white areas lack those cells. The Open University’s OpenLearn explainer discusses the KIT gene in relation to white spotting, while UC Davis’s feline coat-color reference describes a wider set of genes that affect traits such as solid versus tabby appearance, brown variants, and dilution.

Together, these sources support a general explanation: inherited pigmentation and white-spotting processes shape the visible coat. They do not establish a complete, tuxedo-specific molecular account or show that one gene alone produces every familiar tuxedo arrangement. The University of Utah’s Learn.Genetics explainer on cloning also provides context for why coat color can differ even between cats with closely related genetic material, but it is not an account of the historical origin of tuxedo cats.

What is known about the history of the tuxedo pattern and its name?

The evidence supports a history of the pattern as a recurring coat appearance in domestic cats, not a documented breed origin. The sources available here do not establish a first-use date for “tuxedo cat” or a named person, place, or event that introduced the phrase. The label is readily understood as a comparison between the dark-and-white coat and formal clothing, but that resemblance is not proof of a particular naming history.

There is a longer record of people assigning meanings to cat colors. In an article published May 1, 2026, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) cites a Victorian-era book that praised brown tabbies as “docile, honest, and faithful,” called black cats “fierce when angered, but not naturally quarrelsome,” and labeled tortoiseshells “sinister.” These are historical judgments about cats, not evidence that coat color determines temperament.

What does a cat’s color tell us about its personality?

Coat color can prompt strong human impressions, but it is not a dependable shortcut for judging an individual cat. AAHA reports that a survey of 189 people found respondents consistently assigned different perceived traits to cats according to color. That finding describes people’s perceptions, not a test showing that color causes a personality trait.

AAHA also summarizes an urban Kentucky shelter study involving nearly 8,000 cats: black cats had lower adoption and higher euthanasia rates than lighter-colored cats in that study. This is a finding from one shelter context, not a universal adoption rate and not evidence specific to tuxedo cats. The same AAHA article notes that behavior surveys vary in the colors and questions they include, temperament tools can yield varied results, and socialization and environment matter.

As feline behavior expert Dr. Mikel Delgado puts it, “Humans have a psychological drive to categorize things to make the world easier to understand, but we risk losing vital information in the process.” For choosing a companion, Delgado advises, “It’s much easier to look at the cat in front of you, get to know them, and hang out with them to see if you’re a good fit for each other, instead of trying to pick a cat based on their color.”

AAHA also reports figures from the Darwin’s Ark project: more than 23,000 cats enrolled, DNA sequenced from 832 cats, and more than one million questionnaires answered. Those project figures do not establish that tuxedo markings predict behavior. Elinor Karlsson, PhD, professor of Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and director of the Vertebrate Genomics Group at the Broad Institute and MIT and Harvard, cautions: “Humans like to find patterns even where they don’t exist. If you expect an orange cat to be “dumb,” you’ll notice every time they miss a jump and ignore every time they’re clever,”

What the history can—and cannot—tell us

Tuxedo cats have a recognizable coat pattern, not a proven separate breed history. Their white and pigmented areas reflect inherited coat-color biology, although the sources cited here do not provide a full molecular explanation for every tuxedo arrangement. Historical color stereotypes reveal more about human beliefs than feline character, and the phrase’s first use remains undocumented in these sources.
