Most cat-feeding problems are preventable: measure portions, choose food that is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, keep treats modest, and provide clean water. These are ten useful mistakes to check—not an official ranking of the most common errors. Your veterinarian should guide calorie targets, diets for medical conditions, unexplained weight changes, and appetite loss.
1. Guessing portions instead of measuring them
Food-package directions are starting points for an average cat, not a personalized calorie prescription. A cat with lower energy needs may gain weight if you follow the label without adjusting for that individual. Cornell identifies obesity as the most common nutrition-related problem in cats.

Measure the amount offered each day, and count treats and other extras as part of that intake. A kitchen scale can make portions more repeatable, but it does not determine the right amount: ask your veterinarian for an appropriate target and monitor your cat’s body condition.
2. Assuming free-feeding works for every cat
Leaving food out all day suits some cats, but others eat more than they need when food is constantly available. If your cat tends to overeat or is gaining weight, measured meals or timed portions can help you keep track of intake. In a multi-cat household, separate feeding places make it easier to see how much each cat eats.

3. Choosing food without checking nutritional adequacy
Look for the food’s nutritional adequacy statement and choose a complete-and-balanced option for the appropriate life stage. Ingredient-focused marketing is not a substitute for that statement. Wet food, dry food, or a combination can all work if the food is nutritionally appropriate and your cat accepts it.
Wet or dry: what matters?
Cornell reports that wet cat food typically contains 70–80% water. Either format can meet nutritional needs when complete and balanced; consider your cat’s preference, ability to eat it, water intake, medical needs, and how easily you can control portions. Cats eating only dry food need ample fresh water, particularly if they are prone to lower urinary tract disease. Ask your veterinarian whether a medical condition calls for a particular diet.

- 【Timed & Portion Control】 Program up to 6 meals a day with precise portion sizes to keep your pet healthy and prevent overeating.
4. Treating a homemade recipe as automatically balanced
Getting the right nutrients in the right proportions is difficult when formulating a cat’s diet. Cornell recommends nutritionally balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian recommends a home-formulated diet for a medical reason. If a homemade diet is medically necessary, involve veterinary nutrition expertise rather than relying on an unverified recipe.
5. Adding supplements without veterinary advice
A cat eating a complete-and-balanced diet usually does not need routine vitamin or mineral supplements. Too much of some nutrients can be harmful. Check with your veterinarian before adding a supplement, including one marketed for general wellness.

- Precise Portion control:1 Portion ≈ 10 Grams ≈ 1/12 Cup. Allowed kibble size less than 0.5 inch. Up to 6 meals a day. The portion means the kibble amount of each bowl
6. Giving too many treats or table scraps
Treats and scraps can add calories, and treats are not complete meals. Guidance differs: Cornell gives 10–15% of daily calories as a general upper limit for treats, while the ASPCA recommends 5% or less of daily food intake. These are not identical rules. Keep treats modest, include them in your cat’s daily intake, and ask your veterinarian for advice if weight or a medical diet is a concern.
7. Offering milk instead of water
Many cats are lactose-intolerant, so dairy can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Milk is not a substitute for water. Keep clean, fresh water available instead.

If you suspect your cat has eaten something toxic, contact a veterinarian promptly; do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional instructs you to.
9. Feeding raw meat without considering infection risks
Cornell does not recommend raw meat as a food or treat because it can carry toxoplasmosis and other infectious disease risks for cats and people. Claims of proven health benefits are not established in the cited guidance. Ask your veterinarian before making a substantial diet change.

10. Overlooking water, eating conditions, or appetite changes
Keep clean, fresh water accessible. A noisy or busy feeding area, other animals, dirty bowls, or a nearby litter box may put a cat off eating. Choose a calm place and keep bowls clean.
How often should I feed my cat?
Cornell’s general age guidance is three meals a day for kittens under six months, twice daily from six months to a year, and once or twice daily for adults. Health conditions can change what is appropriate, so follow your veterinarian’s advice when your cat has special dietary needs.
Food refusal with weight loss warrants veterinary examination. Cats that stop eating can develop serious problems, so contact your veterinarian rather than waiting for a routine feeding adjustment to work.
