How to Find Which Cat Is Soiling Outside the Litter Box

A log and camera can help identify which cat is soiling outside the box, but veterinary assessment comes first. Learn what to record and which identification methods can mislead.

To identify which cat is eliminating outside the box, first arrange a veterinary assessment, then keep a log and use a camera to observe the soiling site. A vet visit matters because urinary, digestive, pain-related, mobility, and other health problems can cause the same behavior as litter-box aversion or social conflict. A camera can identify which cat is present; it cannot diagnose why the cat is doing it.

How do I determine which cat is eliminating when I have more than one cat?

Start by recording each incident before changing the household setup. Note the date and time, exact location, whether you found urine, stool, or both, the surface, approximate amount, and any posture or other behavior you observed. Also note which animals had access to the area and any recent changes in the household or routine. This history can help your veterinarian assess the problem and may reveal a pattern.

Do not assume that a cat is responsible simply because it was nearby, has used that spot before, or seems to prefer a particular box. Patterns can guide the investigation, but they do not establish a diagnosis or identify a culprit on their own.

Use a camera at the soiling location

If the log and ordinary observation do not identify the cat, set up a video camera to record the area where incidents occur. VCA Animal Hospitals describes this as the best practical solution in its discussion of multi-cat identification: “Therefore, the best solution may be to place a video camera in the area where the soiling occurs.” Review footage for the cat present when elimination happens, then share relevant observations with your veterinarian.

Dr. Elsey's® Cat Attract® Clumping Clay Cat Litter 18-lb. Bag
  • PREMIUM QUALITY: A combination of premium texture and granule size made with 100% bentonite clay for maximum clumping creates litter particles that are just the right size.
  • HARD CLUMPING: Hard clumping medium grain clay helps prevent moisture from reaching the bottom of the tray and forms hard clumps that won't break down, making it easier to scoop.
  • LOW DUST & LOW TRACKING: Ideal for cats and owners who suffer from allergies with a 99% dust-free and hypoallergenic litter formulation that helps keep litter in the box where it belongs.
  • SUPERIOR ODOR CONTROL: Formulated for single or multi-cat households with natural ingredients to keep your home smelling clean and fresh between litter box cleanings.
  • NATURAL HERBAL ATTRACTANT: Blended with a natural herb attractant, the ideal texture and particle size combine to solve litter box problems by bringing cats back to their litter box.

Keep the camera focused on the soiling area and use it only as an observation aid. It can show which cat is there, but it cannot determine whether the cause is disease, pain, stress, access, or litter preference.

Use separation cautiously

Temporarily keeping cats apart, one at a time, may help reveal which cat is not using the box. But the result can be misleading: if tension between cats is contributing to the problem, separation may reduce the conflict and stop the behavior. That does not necessarily show that the original issue has resolved. Discuss a separation plan with your veterinarian, particularly if a cat becomes distressed when isolated.

Do not treat dye methods as definitive

VCA describes fluorescent dye given to one cat and checked at soiled areas with a black light, but notes that results are not always consistent and the dye may stain carpet. VCA also mentions mixing a small amount of nontoxic colored crayon into one cat’s food to trace stool. Do not give a cat dye or add anything to its food without first asking your veterinarian; neither method should be treated as universally safe, reliable, or conclusive.

Is the cat spraying or eliminating outside the box?

Record whether deposits are on vertical or horizontal surfaces, along with the cat’s posture and the amount. These details can help distinguish a spraying pattern from ordinary urination or defecation, but one observation is not enough to determine either the cause or the cat’s health. Cornell’s expert Q&A discusses the distinction between spraying and urinating outside the box, while emphasizing that a complete medical workup is essential to rule out underlying problems.

Keep the distinction in your notes for the veterinarian rather than using it to rule out illness. A change in elimination habits deserves medical attention even if the pattern looks behavioral.

When is litter-box trouble an urgent medical concern?

Arrange a veterinary assessment before labeling house-soiling a behavior problem. Possible contributors include urinary inflammation or other urinary tract disease, kidney or thyroid disease, diabetes, digestive problems, pain, age-related mobility limits, and cognitive changes. More than one factor can be involved.

Straining to urinate or suspected urinary obstruction needs immediate veterinary attention. Cornell identifies urethral obstruction as a lower urinary tract problem, and VCA advises immediate care for a cat straining in the litter box. Do not wait for a camera recording or a longer behavior log if this is happening.

A veterinarian may begin with a physical examination and urinalysis when lower urinary tract signs are present. Additional tests may be needed if the initial evaluation does not establish a cause. If medical checks are normal and the behavior persists, VCA recommends a veterinary behavior workup.

Could another cat be keeping a cat from using the litter box?

Check whether a cat can be cornered, ambushed, frightened, or blocked while entering or leaving a box. Map every box and note which animals can reach it. A box that is technically available may not be accessible to a cat that must pass another animal or enter a location where it feels unsafe.

Also record household changes near the onset of the problem: a new pet, altered routine, changes in access to rooms, or tension among cats. Cornell advises avoiding situations where another animal can terrorize a cat at the box; VCA likewise identifies box number, placement, and household relationships as useful parts of the investigation.

Could the litter-box setup be contributing?

Box setup can affect use, but it does not identify which cat is responsible. Review box size, covered or open design, entry height, cleanliness, litter type and depth, location, and ease of access. Cornell notes that many cats prefer unscented, finer-textured litter and open boxes; individual preferences still vary.

Recommendations for box numbers differ, so treat them as guidance rather than a diagnostic rule. Cornell suggests as many boxes as cats plus one. The AVMA advises at least one box per cat in more than one location. In either case, consider whether boxes are distributed across accessible places rather than clustered together.

After a veterinarian has considered medical causes, a structured preference test can help assess setup. VCA recommends changing one variable at a time, recording results in a journal, and running each test for one to two weeks. This can help identify a preference, but it does not replace identifying the cat or investigating illness and conflict.

What information should I bring to the veterinarian?

  • Your incident log, including dates, times, locations, surfaces, and whether each deposit was urine or stool.
  • Camera observations or footage that shows which cat was present, if available.
  • Notes about posture, amount, access to boxes, other animals nearby, and any household changes around the time the problem began.
  • A map or description of box locations and the cats’ routes to reach them.
  • Any signs of straining or other changes in urination, defecation, movement, or behavior.

A veterinary assessment puts the observations in context and helps determine whether the next step is medical treatment, a change to the environment, behavior support, or a combination of these.
