The American Kennel Club (AKC) says a Greyhound can run up to 40 miles per hour, while BBC Countryfile’s June 13, 2026 list estimates a peak of 45 mph. Those figures come from different sources and methods. The list below is useful for comparing famously quick breeds, but it is not an official world-record table or the result of one controlled study.
The 10 fastest dog breeds in the current published list
BBC Countryfile, published by Our Media Ltd. on June 13, 2026, presents the following estimated top speeds. The article expressly cautions that top-speed figures are not an exact science. It does not establish a common measuring protocol for every breed, so treat the numbers as published estimates rather than directly comparable laboratory results.

| Rank | Breed | Published estimated top speed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Greyhound | 45 mph |
| 2 | Saluki | 42 mph |
| 3 | Sloughi | 42 mph |
| 4 | Afghan Hound | 40 mph |
| 5 | Hungarian Vizsla | 40 mph |
| 6 | Jack Russell Terrier | 38 mph |
| 7 | Dalmatian | 37 mph |
| 8 | Whippet | 35 mph |
| 9 | Borzoi | 35 mph |
| 10 | Doberman | 32 mph |
The ordering should not be read as a definitive global ranking. A quoted maximum may describe an exceptional individual, a short burst, or an estimate based on breed reputation. Surface, distance, weather, motivation, age, conditioning and the way speed is recorded can all change the result.

Why the Greyhound is usually called the fastest
AKC’s breed guide gives the clearest broad answer: “This large hound is the fastest dog breed, and it can run up to 40 miles an hour.” That is a breed-guide statement, not a claim that every Greyhound reaches 40 mph. Countryfile’s estimate is higher at 45 mph, but it belongs to that publication’s estimate-based list. The two figures should be attributed to their respective sources rather than averaged into a new number.

Greyhounds are built for acceleration and short, explosive efforts. Their long legs, flexible spine, deep chest and light frame support a powerful double-suspension gallop. In practical terms, they are sprinters: spectacularly quick over a short distance, but not automatically the best choice for prolonged running. A dog’s individual fitness and health still matter more than its breed label.
What the other nine breeds bring to the list
Saluki
Salukis are classic sighthounds bred for visual pursuit. AKC describes them as swift and agile, and the breed is often associated with the ability to maintain speed over a longer run than a pure sprint specialist. That endurance-oriented reputation is a different performance trait from a single peak-speed estimate.
Sloughi
The Sloughi is an active North African sighthound with a lean, athletic build. Its inclusion near the top reflects the same combination of long stride, efficient movement and chase instinct seen in other coursing breeds. An estimate does not mean every Sloughi will match the listed figure.
Afghan Hound
Despite its flowing coat, the Afghan Hound is an athletic running breed. Its history as a coursing hound helps explain its place among the fastest dogs. Coat, body condition and heat management are especially important when exercising an individual Afghan Hound.

Hungarian Vizsla
The Vizsla is the list’s prominent versatile sporting dog. It was developed to work with people in the field, combining speed with agility, stamina and trainability. That makes it a different kind of athlete from a sighthound: fast movement is paired with the ability to work, search and change direction.
Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell Terriers are much smaller than the hounds above, yet their acceleration, confidence and intense prey drive make them remarkably quick over short distances. Their compact size does not eliminate the need for careful conditioning; repeated high-impact chasing can still strain muscles and joints.
Dalmatian
Dalmatians were developed for active work alongside horses and are known for stamina as well as speed. They may be better suited to sustained activity than a dog bred solely for a brief sprint, but individual variation is substantial.

Whippet
AKC describes the Whippet as a lightning-fast sighthound. Whippets share the Greyhound’s sprinting body plan in a smaller package and are commonly associated with rapid acceleration and a strong chase response. The published estimate places them below Greyhounds, but that is not a test of every dog’s potential.

Borzoi
The Borzoi is a tall Russian sighthound bred for coursing. Its long stride and flexible body support fast running, while its size and coat mean owners must pay attention to warm-up, footing and heat.
Doberman
Dobermans combine speed with strength, agility and working-dog responsiveness. They are not sighthounds, but a fit Doberman can cover ground rapidly and turn quickly. Training, joint health and controlled progression are more useful measures of suitability for an activity than a headline number.
Peak speed, a timed sprint and endurance are different claims
Peak estimate versus measured event
A peak estimate attempts to answer, “How fast might this breed or an exceptional dog run at maximum effort?” It may be compiled from historical descriptions or scattered observations. AKC Fast CAT answers a narrower question: how fast did one dog complete a defined 100-yard course while chasing a lure?

Greyhounds are commonly characterized as sprinters, whereas Salukis are often described as better suited to longer-distance running. That contrast is descriptive, not the outcome of a shared controlled experiment. A dog that excels in a short dash may not be the best performer over several miles.

Individual dog versus breed label
A breed-level list assigns one estimate to a population, while a timed ranking records the performance of named individual dogs. Genetics, age, training, body condition, motivation and running surface create wide variation within every breed. Never assume that owning a listed breed guarantees a particular speed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How AKC Fast CAT produces a more reproducible speed figure
Fast CAT is a timed, straight 100-yard lure chase. One dog runs at a time, and the elapsed time is converted into miles per hour. Because the distance, format and timing method are defined, the result is more reproducible as a description of that event than an informal peak-speed estimate.
Fast CAT points also use a height-based handicap. That adjustment helps compare dogs of different sizes for the competition’s scoring system, but it does not turn a Fast CAT result into a universal biological maximum. A dog’s recorded speed still describes one run on one course under particular conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow annual rankings are calculated
- Runs are collected from January 1 through December 31 of the ranking year.
- For rankings from 2018 onward, AKC uses each dog’s three fastest runs and averages them.
- The annual rankings become official on March 31 of the following year.
This method rewards repeatable performance rather than a single unusually fast attempt. It also means an annual Fast CAT ranking is about individual dogs and event performance, not a definitive ordering of breeds by maximum physiology.

Why event titles can show two kinds of “fastest”
At the 2023 AKC Invitational, the organization separated “Pure Speed” from “Speed of the Breed.” Pure Speed recognized the fastest dogs within height classes. Speed of the Breed recognized dogs running fastest relative to the average for their own breed. The distinction matters: a smaller or less speed-oriented breed can produce an outstanding result relative to its peers without beating the absolute fastest dog in another class.
That event brought together 429 dogs representing 186 breeds. Its categories demonstrate why readers should identify the comparison axis before declaring a winner. Are you comparing an estimated breed peak, a measured 100-yard sprint, an individual record, a height class or performance relative to a breed average?
Is a Greyhound faster than a Whippet?
On the Countryfile estimate list, the Greyhound ranks above the Whippet. AKC also identifies the Greyhound as the fastest breed. Those statements support the practical conclusion that Greyhounds are generally the stronger choice when the question is absolute sprint speed. They do not prove that every Greyhound outruns every Whippet: an exceptionally fit Whippet can beat an unfit, older or distracted Greyhound in a particular run.

Prevent an uncontrolled chase
AKC advises keeping Greyhounds leashed outdoors or allowing them off leash only in a safe, securely fenced area. A sighthound may lock onto prey and cover a surprising distance before an owner can react. The same principle is sensible for any dog with a strong chase drive, regardless of breed.
Build speed gradually
- Use a veterinary check before starting intense running, especially for a puppy, senior dog or dog with a known condition.
- Begin with walking and controlled acceleration before introducing all-out sprints.
- Choose level, secure footing and stop for limping, unusual fatigue, coughing, stumbling or reluctance to continue.
- Provide water and avoid hard exercise in dangerous heat.
Respect meal timing and medical risks
AKC notes that Greyhounds can be susceptible to bloat, also called gastric torsion, a sudden potentially life-threatening emergency. The Saluki profile cautions against vigorous running and play after eating. Ask a veterinarian how to manage meals, exercise and warning signs for your individual dog; emergency symptoms require immediate veterinary care.
Common mistakes when reading fastest-dog lists
- Treating an estimate as a record: the ten figures come from a secondary editorial list that does not document one shared protocol.
- Mixing event results with breed claims: a Fast CAT time is a measured 100-yard performance, not proof of a breed’s absolute maximum.
- Assuming every dog reaches the headline number: age, health, conditioning and motivation create large differences within a breed.
- Confusing speed with athletic usefulness: endurance, agility, trainability and recovery can matter more than a brief peak.
- Ignoring the environment: unsafe fencing, traffic, heat and poor footing can turn a chase into an accident.
How to choose a fast breed responsibly
Start with the activity you can safely provide rather than the highest number in a table. A sprint-oriented sighthound may thrive with short, controlled bursts and secure running space. A Vizsla or Dalmatian may suit someone seeking a dog that combines speed with longer active work. A Jack Russell Terrier may need intensive management of chase behavior despite its small size. Breed tendencies guide questions, but they do not replace meeting adult dogs, reviewing health information and discussing exercise plans with a veterinarian and an ethical breeder or rescue professional.
The most honest answer to “What is the fastest dog breed?” is therefore two-part: Greyhounds are the most consistently recognized fastest breed, and published top-speed figures vary because they measure different things. Use the Countryfile list as an estimate-based overview, and use defined events such as Fast CAT when you need a timed, repeatable sprint comparison.
