10 Hazardous Hiding Places for Cats: Risks, Checks, and Safer Alternatives

Hiding is normal for cats, but washers, recliners, vehicles, chemicals, heaters, windows, and toxic plants can turn a retreat into an emergency. Use this ten-point checklist and provide a safer covered hideaway.

Cats naturally seek quiet, enclosed places, but a hiding spot can become dangerous when it contains moving machinery, crushing mechanisms, toxic products, intense heat, or a fall hazard. The ten locations below are an editorial safety checklist—not an official ranking or a claim that every cat uses them. Before starting an appliance, moving furniture, driving, opening a treated area, or allowing outdoor access, confirm where your cat is. Then provide an approved retreat so hiding does not lead your cat into a dangerous one.

Why a normal hiding habit can become hazardous

Hiding is ordinary feline behavior. Cats may retreat to rest, avoid noise, adjust to visitors, or feel secure in a covered space. The risk comes from the surroundings, not from hiding itself. A dark cavity may contain a belt, hinge, hot surface, chemical residue, poisonous plant, or opening through which a cat can become trapped.

The locations in this guide are grouped by the type of harm they can cause: trapping or crushing, machinery and vehicle injury, heat or falls, and poisoning. No reviewed source measured a “top ten” by frequency, and the hazards are not equal. Treat the list as a way to inspect your home, garage, vehicle, and yard systematically.

Quick comparison of the ten locations

Hiding place Primary hazard Most useful first check
Washer or dryer Entrapment, burns, or injury when the drum starts Keep the door closed and inspect the drum before every cycle
Laundry piles and hampers A concealed cat being carried into an appliance Shake out or visually check laundry before loading
Reclining furniture Crushing or pinching by the mechanism Look underneath and around the footrest before operating
Vehicle hood or engine compartment Fan-belt and moving-engine injury Make noise at the hood and check around the vehicle in cold weather
Garages and sheds Antifreeze, rodenticides, slug bait, and other chemicals Lock products away and clean spills immediately
Cupboards, drawers, and bags Medicines, cleaners, laundry products, or small objects Use closed storage that a cat cannot open
Attics and pesticide-treated storage Mothballs, insecticides, and rodenticides Block access until products are removed or the label permits re-entry
Fireplaces and heaters Burns, smoke, or fire exposure Supervise access and guard an open fireplace
Tilted or open windows Falling or becoming wedged in a narrow opening Fit secure screens or restrict the opening
Yards and plant corners Toxic plants, mushrooms, fertilizers, herbicides, and bait Identify every plant and store garden chemicals securely

1. Inside a washer or dryer

A warm, dark drum can look like an inviting den. If a cat climbs inside, starting the machine can cause severe injury or death. Cats Protection advises keeping appliance doors closed when they are not in use and checking the drum before starting a load. Make the inspection a deliberate step rather than relying on hearing a meow; a frightened or sleeping cat may stay silent.

Check both the washer and dryer, including a machine that appears empty after someone else has loaded it. If your cat is curious about laundry, close the utility-room door when practical and do not leave an open appliance unattended.

2. Laundry piles and hampers

Loose clothing, towels, and a deep hamper create a covered pocket where a cat can disappear. The danger is indirect: a person may scoop up the laundry without seeing the cat and place it in a washer or dryer. The available guidance supports checking appliances, but it does not quantify incidents involving hampers, so treat this as a practical extension of the same safety check rather than a measured frequent event.

Before moving a pile or loading a machine, lift items one layer at a time and look into the bottom of the hamper. A lidded hamper can reduce access, but it is not a substitute for checking the drum.

3. Under or inside reclining furniture

Recliners and adjustable sofas contain moving footrests, hinges, and gaps that can trap a cat. A cat may slip underneath while the chair is upright and remain hidden when someone sits down. Before operating the lever or motor, look along both sides, under the frame, and around the footrest. Ask everyone in the household to use the same check, especially children and visitors who may not know a cat is present.

Keep the chair fully closed when it is not being used if that limits access, and consider blocking a narrow gap that repeatedly attracts your cat. Never reach into a moving mechanism; stop the chair and use a calm, visible approach to get the cat out.

4. Under a vehicle hood or in the engine compartment

In cold weather, an outdoor cat may shelter beneath a vehicle hood or near the engine for warmth. When the engine starts, a fan belt and other moving parts can injure the animal. The ASPCA’s cold-weather guidance recommends checking around the vehicle and making noise at the hood before driving. This source does not provide a frequency estimate, so the precaution applies whenever a cat could have accessed the area, not only after a sighting.

Tap the hood, honk briefly, and wait long enough for a hidden cat to leave; then look around the tires and under the vehicle before starting. If you hear movement, do not start the engine. Open the hood safely and call for help if the cat cannot get out without risk.

5. Garages and sheds with automotive fluids, baits, or chemicals

Garages and sheds offer quiet corners but may contain substances that are lethal in small amounts. Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol can cause kidney failure or death. Rodenticides and some slug or snail baits can also be deadly, with risk depending on the formulation, amount, and route of exposure.

Store containers behind a closed, cat-proof door; do not rely on a capped bottle sitting on the floor. Clean even a small spill promptly and follow the product label for disposal and re-entry instructions. Keep cats out of treated areas for the full label-specified period, and do not let a cat investigate a spill while you decide what to do.

6. Cupboards, drawers, and bags containing medicines or household products

Cats investigate partly open drawers, shopping bags, and low cupboards with their paws and noses. Human medicines, cleaners, laundry products, and small hazardous objects can be accessible in these spaces. A bag that looks harmless may contain tablets, detergent pods, or a string-like item that can cause a separate ingestion problem.

Move medicines and cleaning supplies into closed storage that a cat cannot open. Close drawers immediately after use, empty shopping bags, and keep laundry products in their original labeled containers. If a product has leaked, remove the cat from the area and clean it according to the label before allowing access again.

7. Attics and storage areas treated with pesticides

Attics, lofts, and seldom-used storage rooms can hide mothballs, rodenticides, and insecticides. The ASPCA specifically flags these products as hazards in attic areas. A cat that enters to chase a mouse can contact residue, chew a package, or carry dust back onto its fur and ingest it while grooming.

Keep the access hatch or door secured. Do not release a cat into a recently treated area until the product label says it is safe, including any ventilation or drying requirements. Remove loose pesticide products and keep their labels available for a veterinarian if exposure is suspected.

8. Near fireplaces, heaters, and other hot spots

A cat may curl beside a fire, radiator, space heater, or warm appliance because the enclosed area feels comfortable. The level of danger depends on the heater’s type, surface temperature, placement, and stability; not every heater presents the same risk. An open fire can burn fur or paws, while a knocked-over heater can start a fire.

Supervise access around fires, use a secure guard for an open fireplace, and keep bedding, curtains, and toys away from heating elements. Do not allow a cat to wedge behind a heater where it could contact a hot surface or pull a cord. Turn portable heaters off when no responsible adult is present.

9. Tilted or open windows and narrow openings

A tilted window can create a V-shaped gap in which a cat becomes wedged, while an open, unscreened window creates a fall risk. Cats may focus on birds or outdoor sounds and misjudge the opening. A screen that is loose or pushed out of its frame is not reliable protection.

Use secure, properly fitted screens and window restrictors that prevent a cat from squeezing through. Close tilt windows when the room is unattended, and check basement windows, balcony doors, and other narrow openings at the cat’s eye level. Never assume a cat will avoid a high window because it has lived safely indoors before.

10. Yards, plant corners, and outdoor chemical storage

Outdoor hiding places combine cover with unknown substances. Cats may encounter mushrooms, fertilizers, herbicides, rodent bait, or slug and snail bait beneath shrubs, sheds, and garden furniture. Plant names can also be misleading. The ASPCA identifies species in the Lilium and Hemerocallis groups—including Easter, Oriental, Japanese, and daylilies—as capable of causing life-threatening kidney injury in cats. This warning does not apply automatically to every plant sold with “lily” in its common name.

Identify plants before bringing them into a cat-accessible space, remove hazardous plants, and store garden products in locked storage. Keep a cat away from a treated lawn or bed for the interval on the product label. If you cannot identify a mushroom, plant, or pellet your cat may have contacted, treat the situation as a possible exposure rather than waiting for symptoms.

Build a safe alternative hiding place

Removing every hiding place is neither realistic nor desirable. Instead, offer a retreat that meets the same needs without machinery or toxins. A covered cat bed, a sturdy cardboard box, or a familiar carrier can work. The space should be quiet, easy for the cat to enter and leave, and stable enough not to collapse. Place it away from food, water, and the litter tray so the cat can rest without being disturbed by essential activities.

Keep the retreat available every day, not only during stressful events. Do not force a cat out unless there is an immediate danger; use the safer environment to make hazardous locations less attractive.

A practical safety check before chores and travel

  1. Locate the cat first. Check the approved retreat and the rooms the cat can access before starting a machine, moving furniture, or leaving for a drive.
  2. Inspect moving equipment. Open and look inside washer and dryer drums; check beneath and around recliners; examine vehicle wheels and the engine area when cold-weather sheltering is possible.
  3. Secure substances. Put medicines, cleaners, laundry products, antifreeze, baits, and pesticides behind closed storage. Clean spills immediately.
  4. Control heat and openings. Guard open fires, switch off unattended portable heaters, and secure windows and other narrow gaps.
  5. Check labels and records. Keep the packaging or a photograph of any chemical or bait so a veterinarian can identify the formulation if an exposure occurs.

When increased hiding needs veterinary attention

A cat that suddenly hides more than usual may be stressed by visitors, noise, conflict with another animal, or a change in the home. It may also be ill or in pain. Cats Protection advises consulting a veterinarian when hiding increases or changes noticeably, rather than assuming the behavior is simply shyness.

Arrange prompt veterinary advice if hiding comes with reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, unusual thirst, weakness, breathing changes, lameness, difficulty urinating, or a change in grooming. These signs do not identify a specific cause, but they make waiting for the cat to “come out of it” unsafe.

What to do if poisoning or a serious injury is possible

Call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or ASPCA Animal Poison Control promptly if your cat may have ingested or contacted a medicine, chemical, bait, plant, or unknown substance—even if the cat appears well. Have the product name, ingredients, estimated amount, time of exposure, and your cat’s weight ready. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you.

Go straight to emergency veterinary care for seizures, trouble breathing, unconsciousness, collapse, or bleeding. ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435; confirm current availability and service details when you call. If a cat is trapped in machinery or a vehicle, turn the equipment off, avoid putting your hands into moving parts, and obtain professional help to free the animal safely.

What the poison-exposure numbers do—and do not—mean

ASPCA Animal Poison Control’s 2026 annual summary says it received calls concerning more than 376,000 items pets were exposed to during 2025. The reported categories included veterinary products (9.1%), plants and fungi (7.5%), rodenticides (6.5%), household products (6.4%), and insecticides (3.8%). These figures cover pets generally and represent reported exposure categories, not cat-only rates and not the probability that a cat will be injured in a particular hiding place. They are useful context for securing hazards, not a way to calculate individual risk.
