These ten dogs can be wonderful companions, but they may be a poor fit if your household cannot provide dependable exercise, training, mental work and daily companionship. The list below comes from Petplan UK’s consumer guide; it is an editorial selection, not a scientifically validated ranking or a prediction of every individual dog’s behavior. A dog’s age, health, genetics, fitness, routine and environment can matter as much as its breed.

Use the breed descriptions as a fit check. The exercise figures are Petplan’s estimates, not universal veterinary prescriptions: the guide gives 2+ hours daily for its first eight breeds and 1–2 hours for the final two. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical activity, and simply adding miles will not solve every behavior or health problem.

What “high energy” really means

“High energy” is a lifestyle tendency rather than a formal diagnosis. It usually describes a dog that is ready to move, learn, investigate or work for much of the day. Two dogs of the same breed can still have very different needs because of age, health, temperament, breeding line, previous experience and the structure of their daily routine.

A suitable home must supply more than a single long walk. Most active dogs need a changing mix of aerobic exercise, short training sessions, sniffing and searching, play, rest, and time with their people. Working and herding breeds often settle better when they have a meaningful task, not merely an opportunity to run.

The Petplan UK estimates in the table are useful planning numbers, with the important qualification that the page’s publication year was not visible. They should start a conversation with a breeder, rescue organization and veterinarian rather than serve as a promise that every dog will need exactly that amount.

Labrador Retriever 2+ hours daily Retrieving, swimming, field-style walks and training Can you channel enthusiasm and prevent weight gain while joints develop?
Belgian Malinois 2+ hours daily Structured obedience, scent work, physically demanding activities and a clear job Do you have experienced guidance and the time for precise, ongoing training?
German Shepherd 2+ hours daily Training, scent work, swimming, agility and purposeful walks Can your household provide structure, socialization and suitable physical work?

Dalmatian 2+ hours daily Running when physically ready, agility and energetic outdoor activities Can you offer regular, sustained activity rather than occasional weekend exercise?
Golden Retriever 2+ hours daily Retrieving, swimming, walks and reward-based training Can you combine exercise with impulse control and careful feeding?

Jack Russell Terrier 1–2 hours daily Chasing games, fetching, tug, scent activities and positive-reinforcement training Can you manage confidence, prey drive and fast decision-making in a small body?

Petplan’s list should not be read as “the definitive top ten.” The American Kennel Club (AKC) publishes overlapping but different active-breed and active-owner lists, including Australian Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, German Shorthaired Pointers and Brittanys. Different lists reflect different selection criteria, not a contradiction about which dogs are objectively most energetic.

Border Collie

Border Collies were developed for demanding herding work and are notably quick learners. A daily run without a mental outlet can leave one frustrated. Teach useful behaviors, use carefully chosen puzzle activities, and consider herding-style training or a suitable sport. Build calmness deliberately: an ability to lie on a mat and rest is a trained life skill, not evidence that the dog is “low energy.”

English Springer Spaniel

Springers often thrive when exercise combines movement with their noses and retrieving instincts. Swimming, agility, scent searches and short training games can vary the day. Their enthusiasm makes polite greetings, recall and loose-leash walking priorities, especially when outdoor environments are stimulating.

Labrador Retriever

Retrieving and swimming fit the Labrador’s gundog heritage, but a young Labrador’s enthusiasm can exceed its developing body. Use age-appropriate games, controlled retrieves and training rather than repetitive high-impact jumping. Food motivation is useful for learning, while measured portions and body-condition checks help prevent excess weight that makes exercise harder.

Belgian Malinois

The Malinois is not simply a faster version of a generic pet dog. Petplan emphasizes experienced ownership, structured training, scent work and physical activity. A consistent plan should include clear reinforcement, controlled arousal and recovery time. If you have never trained a powerful, highly responsive working dog, obtain hands-on professional instruction before choosing one.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds can enjoy training, scent work, swimming and agility. Their size and strength make reliable leash skills, socialization and impulse control especially important. Provide purposeful activities and rest; escalating exercise while ignoring anxiety, pain or poor training can worsen the underlying problem.

Vizsla

Vizslas are athletic and strongly people-focused. Running may be appropriate once an individual is mature and medically cleared, while long walks, scent games, retrieving and puzzle activities offer variety. Many do poorly with long periods of isolation, so the schedule must account for companionship as well as mileage.

Dalmatian

Dalmatians have historical associations with coaching work and often enjoy sustained movement. Running and agility can be good outlets for a healthy, mature dog, but conditioning should be gradual. Plan for daily activity rather than relying on an occasional long outing to compensate for sedentary weekdays.

Golden Retriever

Goldens commonly enjoy retrieving, swimming, walks and training. Their sociable nature can make group classes and cooperative games rewarding. Teach an impulse-controlled retrieve, settle behavior and safe interactions with children; friendly does not mean automatically calm or safe in every situation.

Standard Poodle

Standard Poodles were bred for waterfowl retrieving and are often athletic, trainable and mentally demanding. Petplan’s estimate is lower than the estimates for the other eight breeds, at 1–2 hours daily, but that does not remove the need for training and enrichment. Swimming and canine sports are examples; regular problem-solving may be as important as distance walked.

Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russells are small but can be intense. Petplan cites confidence and prey drive and suggests chasing, fetching, tug and positive-reinforcement training. Secure management around wildlife, reliable recall work and careful supervision of fast games matter more than assuming a small dog needs little exercise.

How much exercise does a dog need every day?

There is no single safe number for all dogs. AKC guidance says requirements vary with age, health and breed. Treat the Petplan estimates as a starting range, then observe whether your dog can focus, rest and behave normally between activities. A dog that is exhausted to the point of poor coordination has had too much; a dog that remains frantic, destructive or unable to settle may need a better schedule, more mental work, medical assessment or all three.

Puppies and adolescents

Growing dogs should have several short walks, play periods and training sessions rather than one long workout. Their bones, joints and coordination are still developing. Avoid forcing distance, repetitive jumping or sustained running simply because a puppy appears eager. Increase duration gradually and ask your veterinarian about the individual dog’s size, structure and health.

Adults with health conditions

Joint, heart and respiratory conditions change what is appropriate. Discuss the routine with a veterinarian before increasing intensity. Low-impact options, controlled swimming or shorter sniff-focused outings may be preferable to pounding pavement, but the right choice depends on the diagnosis and the dog’s response.

Older dogs

Older dogs may still need purposeful movement and mental engagement, but pace, footing, temperature and recovery time deserve closer attention. A sudden change in stamina, gait, breathing or willingness to exercise is a health signal, not proof that the dog has become lazy.

Physical exercise is only half the plan

AKC’s general takeaway is that “Mental stimulation is just as important as physical activity.” Rotate activities so the dog must think rather than repeat one exhausting routine.

  • Training: Practice recall, loose-leash walking, stays, cooperative handling and a reliable settle in short sessions.
  • Scent work: Hide food or toys safely, use scent-training exercises, or let the dog investigate on structured “sniff walks.”
  • Food puzzles: Choose difficulty that matches the dog, supervise new items and count puzzle food within the daily ration.
  • Retrieving and tug: Add rules for starting, releasing and stopping so excitement remains controllable.
  • Canine sports: Agility, rally, dock or other activities can provide a task when taught safely and suited to the individual.
  • Working assignments: Herding-style exercises, scent searches or carrying a suitable item can give a working breed an understandable job.

Mental work complements exercise; it does not justify keeping a dog physically confined all day. Alternate demanding sessions with quiet decompression and sleep.

Running and strenuous activity: when to slow down

Do not begin long-distance running with a puppy or developing dog. AKC gives a broad fully developed age range of about 12–18 months, depending on size and breed, and advises veterinary guidance. That range is not a clearance for every dog: growth plates, orthopedic history, body condition, weather tolerance and training experience all matter.

  1. Ask your veterinarian whether the dog is physically ready for the intended distance and surface.
  2. Build a walking and jogging base gradually, with rest days and observation for soreness.
  3. Carry water, avoid dangerous heat and humidity, and stop for excessive panting, weakness, altered gait or reluctance.
  4. Use appropriate identification and leash equipment, and check paws after rough or hot surfaces.

A dog treadmill can be an indoor option for a high-energy dog, according to AKC, but introduce it carefully and supervise every session. It is not a replacement for outdoor walking, exploration or social contact.

When “hyper” may be a schedule, training or health problem

Owners often describe a dog as “hyper” or “too active.” AKC notes that these complaints can reflect an unsuitable exercise plan or insufficient practical training. First review the entire day: sleep, alone time, opportunities to sniff, training quality, access to stimulating environments and the dog’s ability to settle.

Use reward-based training to teach calm behaviors, provide regular tasks and choose dog sports that improve control rather than simply increase arousal. Do not punish frantic behavior or assume that endless exercise is the cure. Pain, anxiety, gastrointestinal problems, endocrine disease and other medical issues can look like restlessness.

If an age- and breed-appropriate exercise and training plan is in place but unusual overactivity continues, arrange a veterinary work-up. That step is especially important when behavior changes suddenly or comes with weight loss, increased thirst, breathing changes, limping, sleep disruption or other physical signs.

Can an active breed live in an apartment?

Apartment size alone does not determine suitability. AKC notes that some active breeds can adapt to apartment living when their owners provide sufficient daily activity and enrichment. The harder questions are whether you can leave the home often enough, manage barking and hallway encounters, provide safe outdoor access, and offer genuine mental work.

An apartment is a poor fit when the dog would spend most of the day alone and receive only rushed toilet breaks. Conversely, a smaller home with a reliable schedule, nearby walking routes, training access and committed caregivers may work better than a large property with little interaction. A yard is useful but does not replace walks, training or companionship.

A practical fit check before choosing

  1. Audit your calendar. Write down realistic weekday and weekend time for walks, training, enrichment, grooming, transport and veterinary care.
  2. Match the outlet to the dog. Choose a breed whose likely work fits your interests: retrieving, swimming, scent work, running after maturity, herding-style tasks or sports.
  3. Plan for difficult days. Identify a trusted walker, sitter, daycare or training professional for illness, overtime, travel and extreme weather.
  4. Budget for development. Include classes, secure equipment, enrichment, preventive care and possible behavior support.
  5. Ask about the individual. A reputable breeder or rescue should discuss temperament, health, parents or history, and how the dog behaves in the home.
  6. Define your non-negotiables. Consider children, cats, livestock, prey drive, noise, visitor management, transport and time alone.

If your honest schedule cannot meet the likely needs, reconsider the match before bringing the dog home. Choosing a less demanding individual or breed is responsible ownership, not a failure.

Questions to ask a breeder or rescue organization

  • What does this specific dog do after exercise: settle, pace, bark, chew or sleep?
  • How long can it comfortably remain alone, and what happens when that limit is exceeded?
  • What training, socialization and enrichment has it already received?
  • Are there orthopedic, cardiac, respiratory or other health findings that affect activity?
  • How does it respond to unfamiliar dogs, children, wildlife, handling and confinement?
  • What support is available if the dog’s needs differ from the expectation?

Answers about the individual are more useful than a breed label alone, while still acknowledging that inherited tendencies influence the work and management a dog may require.

The Bottom Line

Reconsider these breeds when your household cannot reliably combine daily movement, mental work, training and companionship. If you can provide those outlets, choose an individual dog carefully, increase exercise gradually, and involve a veterinarian whenever age, health or persistent overactivity raises questions.
