What are some incredibly hairy dog breeds? These ten are striking examples, from loose shag and flowing silk to dense double coats, cords, and flat “flocks.” They are an editorial selection, not a measurable ranking: canine organizations do not publish a universal hairiness scale or an authoritative top-ten list.
Coat structure matters more than visual volume. A Tibetan Mastiff can look enormous yet need relatively little grooming for much of the year, while a corded coat requires specialized maintenance even when it is not being brushed in the usual way. Use the guide below to match the look you like with the upkeep you can realistically provide.

Hairy is a description, not a scientific category
“Hairy” can mean several different things in dogs. A shaggy coat has loose strands that stand away from the body. A silky coat falls in long, flowing sections. A double coat combines a dense insulating undercoat with coarser guard hair. Corded coats form rope-like sections, while flocked coats develop broader, flatter mats or plates by design.

Those structures behave differently when they get wet, collect debris, shed seasonally, or are left without maintenance. The ten breeds here are therefore best compared by coat type, where the hair is most prominent, and the kind of care the coat demands—not by an invented ranking of “hairiest” to “least hairy.”

1. Old English Sheepdog: the classic shaggy silhouette
The Old English Sheepdog is the familiar shaggy dog of children’s books and classic illustrations. The American Kennel Club calls it “the archetypical shaggy dog, famous for his profuse coat and peak-a-boo hairdo, a distinctive bear-like gait, and a mellow, agreeable nature.” Its full coat is a profuse double coat, and the United Kennel Club standard describes the outer coat as shaggy with a waterproof pile beneath it.
This is loose, abundant hair rather than a corded formation. On a full-coated dog, AKC advises grooming thoroughly down to the skin over the whole body at least weekly. A pet kept in a shorter trim is not maintenance-free: brushing is still needed between baths and haircuts because hair can tangle close to the skin where a casual surface pass will not reach. The breed’s visual volume comes from both length and density, so coat quality cannot be judged by length alone. AKC Old English Sheepdog breed information and the UKC breed standard provide the formal coat descriptions.
2. Afghan Hound: flowing hair with a built-in contrast
The Afghan Hound is hairy in a very different way. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale places it among long-haired or fringed sighthounds, and the Afghan Hound Club of America standard describes fine, silky hair over much of the body and legs. This is a flowing, feathered coat rather than an even blanket of shag.

That contrast is an important part of the breed’s appearance: long hair does not cover every area equally. Ears, legs, flanks, and tail create the dramatic outline people notice, while the saddle remains comparatively sleek. Grooming decisions therefore need to account for differing textures and lengths instead of treating the dog like a uniformly long-haired breed. See the FCI Afghan Hound standard listing and the Afghan Hound Club of America breed standard for the coat pattern.
3. Komondor: tassel-like cords, not ordinary long fur
The Komondor’s coat is one of the easiest to recognize. The Royal Kennel Club describes a large dog with a coarse outer coat and softer undercoat; together, the hairs tend to cling into tassel-like cords. The result is a coat made of hanging sections rather than loose strands that can simply be brushed smooth.

This formation is a coat process, not a styling shortcut. The Royal Kennel Club standard warns that neglect can produce large matted plates. Owners must keep developing cords separated and clean, monitor the skin beneath them, and allow the coat to dry properly after bathing or soaking. A brush designed for a loose double coat is not a substitute for cord maintenance. The Royal Kennel Club Komondor standard and AKC Komondor information explain the breed’s characteristic coat.
4. Puli: a compact herder with natural cords
The Puli is another corded herder, but its coat should not be treated as an interchangeable version of the Komondor’s. AKC describes naturally occurring cords on this compact breed. The cords create a rope-like outline over the body and legs and can make the dog appear larger than its underlying frame.

Cord development takes time and hands-on attention; it is not achieved by leaving a puppy’s coat completely unattended. AKC’s overview of corded dog breeds discusses how Puli cords form and why their care differs from routine brushing.
5. Bearded Collie: an unmistakably loose, shaggy coat
The Bearded Collie supplies the classic loose-shag counterpoint to the corded breeds. This Scottish droving dog has a long, shaggy coat and the beard that gives the breed its name. Hair falls around the face, body, legs, and tail, producing movement and an informal, windblown outline rather than discrete ropes or broad flocks.
Its coat is the kind that can hide leaves, burrs, and small tangles, particularly around furnishings and areas where the legs meet the body. Regular attention is consequently part of living with the look: work through the coat rather than only smoothing the visible top layer, and check the beard and feet after outdoor activity. The AKC Bearded Collie breed page provides the breed context and shaggy-coat description.

6. Briard: a long-coated herding breed
The Briard belongs in a list of visually hairy dogs because its long coat and furnishings give the breed a substantial, enveloping outline. It is a herding breed with hair carried over the body and prominent feathering, but the available breed information does not establish a precise grooming interval or a single maintenance routine that applies to every Briard.

Coat density, length, lifestyle, and whether the dog is kept in a full coat all affect the work involved. Prospective owners should ask a breeder or professional groomer to demonstrate the coat-specific routine for the individual dog rather than borrowing the Old English Sheepdog’s weekly instruction or a corded breed’s technique. Start with the AKC Briard breed information when researching the breed.
7. Tibetan Mastiff: a massive-looking coat with a seasonal pattern
The Tibetan Mastiff combines a heavy, woolly undercoat with coarse guard hair. The mane around the neck, the tail, and the breeches can look especially immense, creating one of the most imposing silhouettes in the group.
Appearance does not mean daily grooming, however. AKC describes the coat as minimally demanding during most of the year. Its care guidance calls for weekly brushing with a slicker or long-pin brush, a wide-tooth comb for the mane, tail, and breeches, and an undercoat rake or deshedding tool during the annual undercoat blow. Those tools are named for this double-coated breed and should not be assumed suitable for separating cords. Details are available in AKC’s Tibetan Mastiff breed information.
8. Samoyed: a plush, thick-coated working dog
The Samoyed’s bright expression is framed by a plush, thick coat developed for a working life in cold conditions. Dense body hair and abundant furnishings create the familiar white, cloud-like appearance, while the texture gives the dog more visual volume than a similarly long but fine-haired breed.

Samoyed coats vary in density and condition, so avoid assigning one universal grooming timetable without examining the individual dog. The practical questions are whether the undercoat is being reached, whether dampness or packed debris is trapped close to the skin, and how much shedding the dog is currently experiencing. AKC’s Samoyed breed information offers breed and care context; its general guidance emphasizes that grooming needs differ by coat type.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Bergamasco Sheepdog: broad “flocks” instead of uniform cords
The Bergamasco Sheepdog demonstrates why all unusual coats should not be lumped together. AKC explains that its coat forms larger, flatter flocks, unlike the Komondor’s more uniform cords. Three hair types work together: a woolly outer coat, long rough “goat hair,” and a fine, oily undercoat.
Those layers create flat or plate-like sections that hang differently from ropes. Coat development and maintenance are therefore specific to the Bergamasco’s texture; trying to force it into a standard loose-brush routine or a Komondor-style description misses the point. The breed’s appearance is a product of its layered hair types, not simply extreme length. Read AKC’s corded-breed overview for the Bergamasco explanation.
10. Havanese: a flowing coat that may become corded
The Havanese is smaller than the other dogs on this list, but its long coat can be visually abundant. AKC includes Havanese among breeds whose coats may be corded. “May” matters: a Havanese is not automatically a corded dog, and many are kept with a flowing coat instead.
Leaving the coat in cords is a deliberate presentation that develops over time and requires dedicated grooming, careful maintenance, and proper drying. A flowing coat has a different task: keeping the long hair free of tangles and debris while preserving the desired length and texture. Decide which presentation you want before adopting, then learn the corresponding routine rather than allowing the coat to mat accidentally. AKC discusses Havanese and other corded possibilities in its corded dog breeds guide.

How to choose a hairy breed by maintenance pattern
Loose shag and flowing coats
Old English Sheepdogs, Bearded Collies, Afghan Hounds, Briards, and many Havanese have hair that remains relatively loose or flowing. The visible length can be misleading: tangles often begin underneath, around furnishings, behind ears, or where legs contact the body. Ask for a demonstration of line-brushing or the breed’s equivalent technique, and find out how the coat is managed between professional appointments if you plan to keep it long.
Dense double coats
Tibetan Mastiffs and Samoyeds illustrate double-coated maintenance. Their undercoats can shed heavily at particular times, but the care pattern is not identical. The Tibetan Mastiff guidance specifically distinguishes ordinary weekly care from the annual undercoat blow. A large coat should therefore prompt questions about seasonal shedding and tool choice, not an assumption of daily brushing all year.
Cords and flocks
Komondors, Pulik, Bergamascos, and some Havanese require a different mental model. Cords or flocks are developed coat structures. Maintenance means preserving the intended sections, preventing neglected areas from becoming solid mats, checking the skin, and drying thoroughly after washing. A generic slicker-brush recommendation belongs to a loose or double coat, not automatically to a corded or flocked one.

Questions to ask before bringing one home
- Which coat presentation will the dog have: full, trimmed, flowing, corded, or flocked?
- What does the routine look like during normal months and during seasonal shedding?
- Which areas tangle or retain moisture first—ears, beard, mane, tail, breeches, feet, or the skin beneath cords?
- Can a breeder or groomer show you the correct tools and technique for this coat?
- How will you keep the dog clean and dry if the coat becomes soaked outdoors?
- What happens if the coat becomes severely matted or a corded section forms a solid plate?
The most useful choice is not the dog that looks hairiest in a photograph. It is the coat whose structure, seasonal pattern, and maintenance demands fit your time, equipment, and access to skilled grooming.
