Hydrurga leptonyx, the leopard seal, is a true seal of the Southern Ocean. Its spotted coat and oversized head are distinctive, but its most remarkable feature is versatility: the same predator can tear apart a penguin and filter tiny krill from seawater. These ten facts explain where leopard seals live, what they eat, how they breed, how large they become, and why a status of Least Concern still comes with important uncertainties.
1. Leopard seals are true seals, not sea lions
Leopard seals belong to the family Phocidae, the “true” or earless seals. They are not sea lions or fur seals, which are eared seals in a different family. The distinction is easiest to see on land: a leopard seal cannot rotate its hind flippers underneath its body to walk. Instead, it wriggles forward and uses its front flippers for assistance.

In the water, that awkward-looking land movement becomes irrelevant. A long, streamlined body, broad foreflippers and a powerful tail make the species an efficient swimmer. Adults have a large head, a long snout and strong jaws. Their grey-to-silver coat is covered with irregular dark spots, giving the animal the pattern that inspired its common name. The markings are not a reliable way to determine sex or age, but they make an individual recognizable at close range.
The combination of a seal’s streamlined shape and a predator’s large head reflects the species’ ecological role. Leopard seals can pursue agile prey in open water, wait near the edge of sea ice, or haul out on ice and remote beaches between feeding bouts.

2. Where do leopard seals live?
Leopard seals have a circumpolar range around Antarctica and occupy Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters throughout the Southern Hemisphere. Many spend time in pack ice, where seals, penguins and other prey are concentrated. Their range is not limited to the continent’s immediate coast: juveniles in particular may travel north to sub-Antarctic islands, and occasional animals reach temperate shorelines.
Finding one outside Antarctica does not necessarily mean it is lost or belongs to a separate population. Young animals can disperse widely, and individuals may follow prey or ocean conditions far from the pack-ice zone. A leopard seal hauled out on a beach in a temperate region is unusual, but the species’ broad movements make such sightings possible.
Habitat use changes with age, season and local conditions. Pack ice provides access to prey and a platform for resting. Sea ice is also important for reproduction, because females give birth there during the austral spring. Open water, coastal areas and islands become especially relevant when animals move north or when seasonal ice retreats.

3. They are mostly solitary and do not follow one simple migration route
Leopard seals are generally solitary at sea and on the ice. You may see several in the same productive area, but they do not form the large, permanent colonies typical of some other pinnipeds. Their solitary habits can make them difficult to survey and can leave many parts of their social life poorly documented.
Their movements are best described as partial, non-breeding migration rather than one synchronized annual journey. Some individuals remain in pack ice through much of the year. Others move farther north for winter, and juveniles are often the most dispersive. The route and timing depend on prey, sea-ice conditions and the animal’s age and reproductive state.
Because individuals can cover large distances, a sighting at one beach or island is not a dependable indicator of the species’ total abundance nearby. It is a snapshot of a wide-ranging animal whose distribution shifts with the environment.

4. What do leopard seals eat?
Penguins are their most famous prey, but they are only one part of the diet. Leopard seals also eat fish, squid, krill and other seals. The balance changes with location, season, the age of the seal and which prey are available. A seal hunting around a penguin colony may focus on birds, while one in open pack ice may take fish, squid or crustaceans.
They are opportunistic rather than specialized penguin hunters. Leopard seals can ambush a penguin as it enters or leaves the water, seize a fish below the surface, or take another seal when the opportunity arises. Their ability to switch prey helps them live across a large and changing range.
Other seals can be both prey and competitors. Young crabeater seals are among the potential targets, although leopard seals do not depend on a single seal species for food. This broad menu is one reason it is misleading to describe them simply as “penguin eaters.”
5. One predator uses two very different feeding methods
Leopard seals combine large-prey hunting with a feeding technique suited to tiny animals. When they attack a penguin or another sizeable carcass, they grip it with their jaws and thrash at the water’s surface, tearing the body into pieces. This vigorous method allows them to handle prey too large to swallow whole.
For krill and other small organisms, the mechanics are almost the opposite. The seal draws water and prey into its mouth by suction, then uses specialized teeth to strain the edible animals from the water. The Antarctic Environments Portal describes leopard seals as the only known pinniped that both hunts large vertebrates and filter-feeds on small prey.
These two modes reduce dependence on any one food source. Large-prey attacks provide energy-dense meals when birds or young seals are available. Filter feeding lets the animal exploit dense krill concentrations that would be impossible to capture efficiently by biting individual animals.

6. Their teeth are built for both seizing and straining food
Pointed teeth at the front of the mouth help leopard seals seize slippery prey. Behind them, the molars have a complex shape that can function as a sieve. When water carrying krill passes through the closed or partially closed jaws, the teeth retain the crustaceans while water escapes.
This dental arrangement explains how the same species can process prey of dramatically different sizes. A jaw designed only for cutting large prey would waste the opportunity presented by swarms of krill; a simple filter-feeding mouth could not hold a penguin. Leopard seals have both capabilities in one feeding system.
Teeth are also important for handling carcasses. The seal can clamp onto a large animal, pull against the resistance of the water and use repeated shaking to remove pieces. Observing that behavior from a distance can look dramatic, but it is normal feeding mechanics rather than evidence that the animal is attacking everything around it.

Leopard seal births occur from late October to late December, the austral spring and early summer. Females give birth on sea ice, generally to a single pup, after a gestation of about nine months. The ice platform offers a resting surface away from many marine predators and keeps the newborn close to productive feeding habitat.
Pups are weaned at about four weeks. That is a short nursing period compared with many land-breeding mammals, so a pup must grow quickly and learn to function in a demanding environment. The mother provides energy-rich milk during the nursing interval, after which the young seal must begin catching prey for itself.
Remote ice, solitary behavior and harsh weather make reproduction difficult to observe directly. Researchers therefore know less about some details of mating, pupping success and early survival than they do for species that breed in accessible colonies. A single observed birth should not be treated as a complete picture of how often females reproduce.

8. How big are leopard seals?
Females are generally larger and heavier than males. The Australian Antarctic Program gives these typical adult measurements:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Sex | Typical adult length | Typical adult weight | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Female | 3.0 metres | 370 kilograms | Large females may exceed 3.5 metres and 500 kilograms |
| Male | 2.8 metres | 320 kilograms | Typical value reported by the Australian Antarctic Program |
These are representative figures, not a universal maximum. Measurements vary among references, regions and individuals, so it is more accurate to report the source and sex than to collapse every number into one supposed record size. A very large female can be substantially heavier than the typical adult, especially when body condition and season are taken into account.
Size gives leopard seals an advantage when subduing large prey, but it also carries an energetic cost. Maintaining a body of several hundred kilograms requires reliable access to food, which helps explain why sea-ice edges and productive waters are important parts of their habitat.

Leopard seals are powerful wild predators and should never be approached, fed or touched. They are not indiscriminate man-eaters, however. Most encounters involve an animal resting on ice or a beach, not one seeking people as prey. The safest response is to give the seal space, keep pets and children away, and follow instructions from the local wildlife authority.
Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment advises observers to stay at least 20 metres away and not disturb a hauled-out leopard seal. That is regional public guidance rather than a universal rule for every coastline; authorities elsewhere may set different distances or close an area altogether. Use binoculars or a long camera lens instead of moving closer for a photograph.
If a seal appears injured, distressed or trapped, do not attempt a rescue. Record the location from a safe distance and contact the relevant wildlife service. A leopard seal that opens its mouth, raises its head, lunges toward the water or changes direction toward people is signaling that you are too close; retreat slowly without blocking its route to the sea.

10. What predators do leopard seals have, and are they endangered?
Natural predators
Killer whales are identified by the Australian Antarctic Program as the leopard seal’s only natural predator. Predation has been observed rarely, and reports include a likely uncommon killing of an elephant seal. The rarity of sightings does not prove that attacks never happen; it reflects how difficult it is to observe interactions across a huge, remote ocean.
Conservation status and population estimates
The IUCN lists leopard seals as Least Concern. That category means the species is not currently assessed as facing the thresholds for a more threatened category; it does not mean that every population is stable or that the animal has been precisely counted.
Two often-quoted population figures come from different methods and cannot be read as evidence of a confirmed increase:

| Estimate | Method and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 35,000 | Circumpolar aerial and shipboard surveys from 1999–2000, summarized by the Antarctic Environments Portal in 2021 | The overview describes this as an underestimate; those surveys were the last circumpolar surveys of their kind |
| About 79,000 inferred animals | IUCN pre-publication assessment dated 10 December 2025, prepared for 2026 publication; derived from a genetic female effective-population estimate plus assumptions about sex ratio and maturity | Assumption-dependent and likely an underestimate, not a direct census or a demonstrated population trend |
The difference between these numbers mainly reflects methodology, not a measured boom in leopard seals. A survey counts or models animals observed in particular conditions. A genetics-based inference estimates population size from effective breeding numbers and assumptions about how those animals relate to the total population. Neither figure is an exact current census.
Why sea ice and prey still matter
Sea ice is essential habitat for reproduction and influences where prey gather. The Antarctic Environments Portal reported a 21–28% loss of sea-ice habitat in the western Antarctic Peninsula, a regional figure that should not be generalized to the entire Antarctic. Changes in ice cover can alter access to pupping sites, resting platforms and prey.
Krill availability and fishing pressure are additional concerns because they can affect the food web on which leopard seals depend. The long-term direction of the species remains uncertain, so “Least Concern” should be read alongside the need for continued monitoring of sea ice, prey and breeding success.
