Other creatures stand out by different measures: the whale shark is the largest fish, while a giant siphonophore colony can reach a greater reported length than a whale. The animals below are 10 of the largest living marine creatures, not a strict ranking, because body mass, body length, tentacle reach, and colony length are different measurements.

1. Blue whale
Balaenoptera musculus
The blue whale is the largest living marine animal and the largest animal known to have existed. NOAA lists maximum dimensions of about 110 feet (33.5 meters) and 330,000 pounds (approximately 150 metric tons).

Antarctic blue whales tend to be the largest, and females are generally bigger than males. Despite their size, blue whales feed mainly by filtering tiny prey, especially krill, from the water with baleen plates rather than hunting large animals.
Reports that a normal blue whale weighs 200 tons are often repeated, but modern government summaries commonly put the upper figure closer to 150–160 metric tons. The exact weight depends on the individual and how it was measured.

2. Fin whale
Balaenoptera physalus
The fin whale is generally considered the second-largest whale species after the blue whale. NOAA gives an upper size range of 75–85 feet (22.9–25.9 meters) and a weight of roughly 40–80 tons.
Fin whales live throughout the world’s oceans. Their streamlined shape and powerful swimming ability have earned them the nickname “greyhounds of the sea.” They are baleen whales that filter-feed, but their endangered status means their size should not distract from their conservation needs. NOAA lists the species as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
3. Whale shark
Rhincodon typus
The whale shark is the largest living fish, not the largest sea animal overall. That distinction belongs to the blue whale, which is a mammal. Whale sharks are sharks with cartilage skeletons, gill slits, and a fish’s method of breathing.

A female whale shark caught near Veraval, India, on May 8, 2001, measured 18.8 meters (61 feet 8 inches) and is recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest scientifically documented specimen. NOAA more conservatively describes the species as reaching more than 50 feet, with some individuals weighing several tons.
Whale sharks are filter feeders. They strain plankton and other small food from the water, so their imposing size does not make them the kind of active predator that many people associate with sharks. Historical claims of whale sharks exceeding 20 meters should be treated cautiously because reliable measurements are scarce.
4. Bowhead whale
Balaena mysticetus
Bowhead whales can reach 62 feet (18.9 meters) and about 200,000 pounds (90.7 metric tons). They live mainly in Arctic and subarctic waters, where their thick blubber helps them survive extremely cold conditions.
The bowhead has an unusually large skull, which can exceed 16.5 feet (5 meters)—around one-third of the animal’s total length. Its skull helps the whale break through sea ice to breathe.

- Easy to clean: When you clean your fish tank, a simple rinse of the rock cave decorations with water is all you need.
- Make your Aquarium Vivid And Lively: Provide a natural environment feeling with vivid and detailed colors to add lively life to your aquarium.
Bowheads are also famous for their longevity. Evidence suggests that some can live for more than 200 years, making them among the longest-lived mammals. They are enormous, but they are not the second-largest whale; that position normally goes to the fin whale.
5. Sperm whale
Physeter macrocephalus
The sperm whale is the largest toothed whale. NOAA records males reaching about 52 feet (15.8 meters) and 45 tons. Females are substantially smaller, at approximately 40 feet (12.2 meters) and 15 tons.
This difference matters when describing the species. A male maximum should not be presented as though it applies equally to females. Sperm whales are deep-diving predators that pursue squid, including giant and colossal squid, in the ocean’s darker depths.
Their massive, square-shaped heads contain a large spermaceti organ, and their bodies are adapted for long dives. They are not baleen filter feeders like blue, fin, and bowhead whales; teeth make them the largest members of the toothed-whale group.

Cetorhinus maximus
The basking shark is generally recognized as the second-largest fish, after the whale shark. NOAA gives a size of approximately 32 feet (9.8 meters) and more than five tons, while another NOAA summary cites a commonly reported maximum range of 35–40 feet.
Its enormous mouth can make the shark look threatening, but basking sharks are filter feeders. They swim with their mouths open, drawing in plankton-rich water and passing it over their gill structures. They are not aggressive predators hunting large marine animals.
The species is a shark, not a whale and not a close relative of whales. Its large size is an example of how filter feeding has evolved independently in several very different ocean animals.

7. Giant squid
Architeuthis dux
The giant squid is one of the ocean’s most famous deep-sea invertebrates. The Smithsonian reports a scientifically recorded total length of about 43 feet (13 meters). The longest recorded mantle—the muscular central body—was approximately 7.4 feet (2.25 meters).
Those figures are more useful than sensational stories claiming that giant squid regularly reach 60 or 100 feet. Tentacles may be stretched, damaged, detached, or measured inconsistently, so old reports are difficult to verify. Some estimates based on beak size suggest that a giant squid might reach around 66 feet (20 meters), but no intact animal of that size has been documented.
DNA research reported by the Natural History Museum supports the conclusion that the giant squid specimens studied belong to one species, Architeuthis dux. It is a very large squid, but its confirmed measurements are less extreme than many popular accounts suggest.
8. Colossal squid
Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni
The colossal squid is a heavily built deep-sea squid known for its large hooks and eyes. The largest collected specimen measured roughly 9 meters, although it was not fully mature.
Estimates of the species’ ultimate size vary. Some reach 14–18 meters, but those numbers remain unverified estimates rather than measurements of a confirmed adult. It is therefore not accurate to state as settled fact that the colossal squid is longer than the giant squid.
In March 2025, researchers obtained the first confirmed footage of a living colossal squid in its natural habitat. The animal filmed was a juvenile only about 30 centimeters (roughly 12 inches) long. The footage was an important observation of a rarely seen animal, but it did not reveal the size of a mature adult.
9. Lion’s mane jelly
Cyanea capillata
The lion’s mane jelly shows why measurements need context. Its bell can reach approximately 3 feet (1 meter) in diameter, while its trailing tentacles can extend beyond 100 feet (30.5 meters).

By tentacle length, it is one of the longest creatures in the sea. That does not mean it has a body longer or heavier than a blue whale. The jelly’s bell is about a meter across; the exceptional figure comes from its long, delicate tentacles spreading through the water.
Those tentacles are equipped with stinging cells used to capture prey. Their length also makes encounters difficult to judge visually, since the bell may be far from the outermost parts of the animal.
10. Giant siphonophore
Praya dubia and related siphonophores
A giant siphonophore can be reported at approximately 40–50 meters (131–164 feet) long. That figure may put it beyond a blue whale in total extended length, but it is not a direct body-to-body comparison.
Siphonophores are colonies made from many specialized connected units called zooids. Individual zooids perform different functions, such as feeding, reproduction, or movement, while remaining connected as one coordinated colony. In that sense, a siphonophore is fundamentally different from a whale, shark, or squid, which is a single animal.
Some colonies, including Apolemia, have been reported at even greater lengths. However, siphonophores can coil, stretch, and move, making a complete measurement difficult. Whether one should call a siphonophore the longest animal on Earth depends partly on whether a colonial organism is included in the comparison.
Why size records from the ocean need caution
Ocean animals are difficult to measure in the field. A dead specimen may be damaged or stretched, a tentacle may be missing, and a flexible colony may not have a single obvious “end.” Historical accounts also tended to favor extraordinary claims over carefully documented measurements.

- Replicate the natural environment, once it's in the tank you can't even tell it's made of plastic. Your fish will enjoy the environment that these tall plants provide. They can swim and hide through the leaves.
- Unlike live plants, fish tank plastic artificial plants don’t need specialized lighting and other substrates. they won't die or become tattered and unattractive. they don't need any pruning and will stay beautiful alone.
- Soft, won't scratch fishes, the plant will swing with the water which looks real, could be planted both in freshwater and seawater. Each plant has its own anchor base for holding it in the gravel bed.
- Aquarium plastic plants are made of eco-free non-toxic PVC materials. They are absolutely safe for fish, they won’t die, rot or cause any algae problems, won't contaminate water, color won't fade.
- Ameliade cherry blossom tree fish tank decorations will add a vibrant touch to your fish tank, making it look more lively and attractive. Perfect for medium and large aquariums, and betta fish tanks.
- What is being measured? It may be body length, mantle length, total length, bell diameter, tentacle reach, or colony length.
- Is the number documented or estimated? A collected specimen or scientifically measured animal is stronger evidence than a calculation based on a beak or fragment.
- Is it one animal? A siphonophore colony should not be treated as identical to the body length of a solitary whale.
Using those distinctions avoids several common errors: calling the whale shark the biggest sea animal, presenting a 100-foot giant squid as confirmed, or saying that a lion’s mane jelly is larger than a blue whale simply because its tentacles can extend farther.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Is a giant squid bigger than a colossal squid?
There is no confirmed adult measurement that definitively settles the comparison. A giant squid has a documented total length of about 13 meters, while the largest collected colossal squid was roughly 9 meters and was not fully mature; larger colossal squid sizes are estimates.
Is the siphonophore the longest animal?
Some siphonophore colonies have reported lengths of 40–50 meters or more, but a siphonophore is a colony of connected zooids rather than a single-bodied animal. Its flexible shape also makes complete measurements difficult, so the claim needs qualification.
The Bottom Line
The blue whale is the clear winner by overall animal size, the whale shark is the largest fish, and the fin whale is the second-largest whale. Other creatures lead under different definitions: the sperm whale by toothed-whale size, the lion’s mane jelly by tentacle reach, and giant siphonophores by reported colony length. Comparing them responsibly means naming the measurement—and recognizing when the “creature” is actually a colony.
