Perth Zoo’s last elephant, Putra Mas, arrived at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, after a 42.5-hour road journey, according to Perth Zoo’s arrival update. His move completed the transfer of Perth Zoo’s remaining elephants: Permai had arrived at Monarto in January.
Where did Perth Zoo’s last elephant go?
Putra Mas now lives at Monarto Safari Park, where he joined a regional Asian elephant herd. Perth Zoo says the habitat opened in 2024 and is almost as large as the entirety of Perth Zoo. The zoo identifies the herd as Burma, who came from Auckland; Permai and Putra Mas, from Perth; and Pak Boon and Tang Mo, from Sydney.

Putra Mas’s arrival left Perth Zoo without elephants and closed the zoo’s elephant era. Perth Zoo says Tricia arrived in 1963 and died in 2022 at age 65. The zoo also reports that community donations made in Tricia’s honour exceeded $30,000 and supported a ranger-station hut in Sumatra.

Why did Perth Zoo move its elephants?
Perth Zoo says it announced the decision to move its elephants in 2018 because its inner-city South Perth site could not provide enough space for a functioning herd. After Tricia died in 2022, Permai was left without female elephant companions. The zoo said Monarto offered a setting where she could live with other elephants. This is Perth Zoo’s stated welfare rationale for the move.

How long did Putra Mas’s journey take?
Perth Zoo reports that Putra Mas travelled for 42.5 hours by road before arriving at Monarto on 5 November 2025. Its arrival update does not provide a detailed route log or an independently documented record comparison. The zoo says it believes the transfer may have been the largest overland transport of a bull elephant ever undertaken; that is the zoo’s assessment, not a confirmed world record.
How the elephants were prepared for travel
According to Perth Zoo, the transfers used custom-built crates fitted with air conditioning, insulation, a temperature gauge and cameras. The elephants were introduced to their crates in advance and could choose to walk inside; keepers used food and encouragement during the acclimation process. The zoo says tethers were used during travel.

What happened to Permai?
Permai made the journey before Putra Mas, arriving at Monarto in January 2025. Perth Zoo and Zoos SA reported that her road trip took 40 hours and covered 2,700 kilometres. The zoo said she arrived safely, rested, and began settling in. Those figures and details concern Permai’s transfer, not Putra Mas’s.

Perth Zoo’s January 2025 update on Permai described her first contact with Burma through mesh. Keepers planned to observe the elephants’ behaviour before increasing their interaction, illustrating a gradual introduction for the females. That account does not describe Putra Mas’s integration into the herd.

What is known about the receiving habitat?
Perth Zoo describes the Monarto habitat as almost as large as the entirety of Perth Zoo, with separate sleeping barns for females and the male. The available zoo account does not state a precise area for the habitat, so a more specific measurement should not be inferred from it.
