10 of the World’s Most Famous Whales—and Why They’re Remembered

Some famous whales are fictional, some are historical, and others are documented individuals. Here is what reliable records say about Moby Dick, Mocha Dick, Migaloo and Tahlequah.

There is no authoritative global ranking of the world’s “most famous” whales. This curated list brings together fictional and historical whales, documented individual animals, and whales remembered through conservation stories. Those categories are not interchangeable: a character from a novel is not evidence of a real animal, and a popular historical tale is not necessarily a verified record.

Famous whales at a glance

Whale Status and species Why it is remembered
Moby Dick Fictional sperm whale Herman Melville’s novel
Mocha Dick Historical sperm whale A real whale whose story helped inspire Melville
Migaloo Documented humpback whale Its unusually pale appearance
Tahlequah (J35) Documented Southern Resident killer whale Two widely reported episodes in which she carried a dead newborn

These four entries are the individuals and characters for which the available sources establish specific details. A longer list of ten would require reliable, whale-specific evidence for six more candidates; adding names without it would make the list less trustworthy, not more complete.

1. Moby Dick: the fictional whale

A character, not a documented animal

Moby Dick is the white sperm whale in Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby-Dick. The character is fictional, though the novel drew on real maritime stories. NOAA says Melville read a magazine account of Mocha Dick in 1839 and also drew on the sinking of the whaling ship Essex and the experience of its captain, George Pollard. NOAA explains the history behind Moby Dick.

2. Mocha Dick: the real whale behind part of the legend

A historical account that helped inspire a novel

Mocha Dick was a real albino sperm whale killed near Mocha Island off the coast of Chile. His story appeared in print before Melville wrote his novel. That connection does not make Mocha Dick and Moby Dick the same whale: one is a whale in a historical account, the other a fictional character shaped by multiple sources.

3. Migaloo: the famously pale humpback

A real individual, with pigmentation that should not be oversimplified

Migaloo is a documented humpback whale first spotted in 1991. DNA testing confirmed that Migaloo is male, but the cause and classification of his pale pigmentation should not be casually stated as settled albinism. In a 2013 Smithsonian Magazine article, researcher Megan Anderson, who tested Migaloo’s DNA, said, “It’s going to be a long and complex process to test for albinism in this humpback whale as it has not ever been done before.” That was a statement about the difficulty of diagnosis at the time, not a current laboratory update. Smithsonian Magazine’s account of Migaloo describes the whale and the uncertainty around the label.

4. Tahlequah: the Southern Resident orca known as J35

A documented whale and a carefully described story

Tahlequah is the familiar name for J35, an individual Southern Resident killer whale. NOAA reported that she carried her dead calf for approximately 17 days after its death in July 2018. NOAA also reported that she carried another newly dead newborn in late December 2024 and early January 2025. These are observations; they do not establish what Tahlequah felt or intended.

NOAA’s J35 response record documents the 2018 event, and its 2025 report describes the later newborns. The Southern Resident population is also the subject of conservation concern: NOAA’s July 2025 census counted 74 individuals and lists the population as endangered. NOAA identifies depleted prey, vessel disturbance and noise, and contaminants among the threats. These are U.S. population and regulatory facts, not a statement about whale protections or status in every country. NOAA Fisheries’ killer-whale science page provides the population and threat context.

How scientists identify individual whales

Natural markings and catalog records

Familiar names make individual animals easier to discuss, but identification rests on observable features and records. Humpback researchers and naturalists can distinguish whales by distinctive patterns on the underside of their flukes. For Southern Resident killer whales, NOAA uses a pod letter and an individual number; Tahlequah’s catalog identifier is J35. NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary describes humpback identification.

Names are useful, but stories still need evidence

Names help readers and researchers keep track of accounts about particular whales. They can also make anecdotes circulate repeatedly without making them more reliable. A NOAA technical report on the history of naming individual whales cautions that some newspaper and magazine stories were uncritical and “probably at least partially invented.” That warning applies to particular historical accounts, not to every named whale story. When a memorable tale is repeated, check whether it can be traced to a reliable record. NOAA’s technical report discusses individual whale naming and historical accounts.

What “famous whale” can mean

Fame can come from very different kinds of evidence: a lasting fictional character, a historical account, an individual animal recognized by distinctive markings, or a conservation story documented by researchers and agencies. Keeping those categories clear helps separate literature from biography and observation from interpretation.

One terminology note: orcas are also called killer whales, but they belong to the dolphin family. NOAA groups whales, dolphins, and porpoises within the cetaceans. In the United States, NOAA says whales are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act; legal protections elsewhere depend on the jurisdiction. NOAA’s whale overview covers cetaceans and U.S. protections.
