10 Otter Facts That Explain Their Fur, Tools, Diet, and Remarkable Dives

Sea otters and North American river otters solve life in the water differently. These ten facts cover their habitats, insulation, appetite, tools, prey, ecosystem effects, swimming abilities and social behavior.

Otters are semi-aquatic mammals, but there is no single “typical” otter lifestyle. Sea otters spend their lives in nearshore marine water, while North American river otters use rivers, lakes, marshes, ponds and even some coastal habitats. Their bodies, diets and social habits reflect those different environments.

Here are ten evidence-based facts, with the species named whenever a behavior or measurement applies specifically to sea otters or North American river otters.

10 interesting facts about otters

1. Sea otters are marine mammals that live close to shore

Sea otters are fully marine mammals, although they usually remain in shallow, nearshore water rather than traveling far into the open ocean. Northern sea otters occupy coastal waters around the North Pacific. Southern sea otters live along California’s central coast. Nearshore habitat gives them access to the rocky seafloor where they forage, rest and raise young.

This lifestyle distinguishes sea otters from river otters. “Otter” describes a family of related mammals, not one habitat type. A sea otter’s daily routine is tied to tides, kelp forests and submerged rocky areas, whereas a river otter can move among many kinds of freshwater and coastal wetlands.

2. Sea otters stay warm with fur instead of a layer of blubber

Unlike many marine mammals, sea otters do not rely on blubber as their main insulation. Southern sea otters depend on an exceptionally dense, water-resistant coat and on producing substantial internal heat to maintain body temperature in cold water.

The coat works only when it stays clean, dense and properly groomed. Oil contamination can mat the fur and reduce its insulating performance, allowing cold water to reach the skin. That is why an oil spill threatens a sea otter’s ability to survive even before the animal suffers from direct poisoning or food loss.

This insulation strategy also helps explain why sea otters spend so much time grooming. Keeping the hairs aligned and water-resistant is a physiological necessity, not merely a cosmetic behavior.

3. An adult sea otter may eat one-quarter of its body mass every day

The U.S. Department of the Interior reported in 2021 that a sea otter eats about 25 percent of its body weight in food each day. That unusually high intake supplies the energy needed to generate body heat in cold water, where the animal cannot depend on blubber for insulation.

For a 20-kilogram (44-pound) otter, one-quarter of body mass would be about 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of food in a day. The exact amount varies with body size, prey availability, water temperature and reproductive demands, so the 25-percent figure should be read as an attributed general estimate rather than a fixed requirement for every individual.

4. Sea otters use rocks as tools

Sea otters are among the best-known tool users in the animal kingdom. An individual may use a rock as a hammer or an anvil to crack the shells of hard-shelled prey. The otter can float on its back, place a mussel, clam or other item on its chest, and strike the shell against the stone until it opens.

A loose fold of skin beneath the forearm can serve as a temporary pouch. During a dive, the otter may collect prey and a useful rock, then bring both to the surface. This built-in storage space lets it keep its paws available for swimming and maneuvering while it gathers food.

Tool use is not a universal behavior among all otter species. It is especially associated with sea otters handling benthic prey, so it should not be used as a description of every otter’s feeding method.

5. Resting sea otters can anchor themselves in kelp or seagrass

Sea otters sometimes wrap themselves in kelp or seagrass while resting so currents do not carry them away. They may also rest in social groups. The vegetation acts like a natural anchor in a habitat where a floating mammal could otherwise drift from a feeding area.

This behavior is different from the popular image of otters holding hands. Sea otters can form close resting groups, but hand-holding is not needed to explain how they remain in place, and it should not be presented as a universal or constant otter behavior.

6. Sea otter menus include dozens of prey types, but individuals often specialize

Sea otters eat bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as clams, crabs, sea urchins, snails and mussels. NOAA Ocean Today reports 33 prey types in its sea-otter overview, while noting that an individual otter often favors only two or three kinds of prey.

That combination of broad species-level variety and individual preference helps explain why two otters in the same region may forage differently. One may concentrate on mussels and crabs while another spends more effort searching for urchins or clams. Availability, handling difficulty and local seafloor conditions all influence the choices an otter makes.

Because sea otters must eat frequently, they are active foragers rather than occasional opportunists. Their diet is built around prey that can be found and opened in the nearshore environment.

7. Sea otters can influence kelp and seagrass food webs

By eating sea urchins, sea otters can reduce the grazing pressure that strips kelp forests. This is a food-web effect: fewer urchins may leave more kelp available to grow, shelter animals and provide habitat. It does not mean otters alone determine whether an ecosystem is healthy; temperature, storms, pollution, disease, fishing and many other factors also matter.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service descriptions also discuss indirect relationships involving crabs, sea slugs, isopods and seagrass. Changes in otter predation can move through several feeding relationships rather than stopping with the prey an otter eats directly.

The important point is that a predator can affect habitat-forming plants. Sea otters are therefore not only consumers in a kelp ecosystem; under some conditions, their feeding helps shape the physical environment used by other species.

8. North American river otters are not limited to rivers

North American river otters use rivers, but they also live in lakes, ponds, marshes and other aquatic habitats. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo also notes their presence in coastal waters. A better description is a flexible aquatic mammal that can move among connected waterways and wetlands.

This range of habitats affects how people encounter them. A river otter may appear along a forested stream, a quiet pond, a marsh channel or a shoreline. Seeing one near the coast does not automatically mean it is a sea otter; habitat, body shape and behavior must be considered together.

River otters still need access to water for travel, hunting and escape, but they can use banks, vegetation and sheltered shorelines for resting and denning. Their ability to exploit varied aquatic settings is one reason the species occurs across a broad geographic range.

9. River otters have several adaptations for underwater swimming

North American river otters have webbed feet, water-repellent fur and nostrils and ears that can close underwater. These features reduce drag, keep water out of sensitive openings and help the animal control its body while diving.

The Smithsonian reports that a North American river otter can dive as deep as 60 feet and hold its breath for up to eight minutes. Those are reported maximum capabilities, not a schedule every otter follows on every dive. Most dives are shaped by the depth, current, cover and prey available at that site.

Webbed feet provide propulsion, while the streamlined body and flexible spine allow quick turns. Closing the ears and nostrils is particularly useful when an otter pursues prey through submerged vegetation or explores the bottom.

10. River otter play can serve practical purposes

North American river otters may live alone or in pairs, yet they also socialize in groups. Their social pattern is flexible rather than a rigid rule that applies to every season or family.

Play is a conspicuous part of river-otter behavior. Sliding down muddy or snowy banks, chasing one another and wrestling may strengthen social bonds. Play can also provide practice for hunting movements or help young otters develop physical skills. Scent-marking around a territory adds another layer of communication, allowing otters to leave chemical information for other members of their species.

Calling these animals playful does not mean the activity has no function. In a young otter, repeated games can build coordination; in a group, they may maintain relationships. The same behavior can therefore be both enjoyable and useful.

Why sea otter conservation history still matters

Sea otters were heavily targeted during the fur trade. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that the worldwide population fell to a few hundred animals between 1742 and 1911. That historical collapse explains why modern sea-otter discussions focus on habitat protection, pollution response and legal safeguards as well as natural history.

In the United States, sea otters later received protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. Those laws do not make every population secure, and they do not remove the need to monitor regional threats. Current population totals and status can change by location, so a precise number should be taken from the latest agency assessment for the particular sea-otter population being discussed.

What these facts show

“Otter” covers animals with different solutions to life in water. Sea otters use dense fur, high energy intake, tool use and nearshore foraging to survive in cold marine habitats. North American river otters rely on versatile swimming adaptations and a flexible approach to freshwater, wetland and coastal environments. Naming the species is essential: a behavior that is characteristic of a sea otter should not automatically be assigned to every otter.
