10 Popular Snakes Around the World: Pet Favorites Explained

There is no definitive global ranking of snakes, but current surveys, search data and pet-trade evidence highlight ball pythons, corn snakes and eight other widely recognized species. Learn what popularity measures really show and how to choose responsibly.

There is no scientifically verified worldwide ranking of the ten “most popular snakes.” Popularity can mean ownership, online searches, trade interest, cultural recognition, or how often a species is encountered in the wild. The strongest recent measurements concern pet keeping, so this guide uses a transparent editorial selection of ten widely recognized snakes, led by species with documented pet-interest evidence. It is not a census of all snake keepers or a ranking of every wild snake.

How “most popular snakes in the world” can be measured

Different measurements answer different questions. A search index shows what people look up, not what they keep. A keeper survey describes its respondents, not every household. Trade visibility can favor species that are easy to breed or frequently displayed. Those distinctions explain why two credible lists may put species in different orders.

Evidence What it found What it does not prove
Worldwide Reptile Super Survey, reported June 5, 2026 Royal (ball) python was identified by 35% of respondents as a kept pet reptile. The survey collected 7,650 responses from 74 countries between January and April 2025. It was promoted through social media, stores, keepers, businesses and reptile groups, so it is self-selected rather than a census of global owners.
Peer-reviewed Google Trends study published in 2021 Relative search interest from 2004 through 2020 showed ball-python popularity increasing during the 2010s; corn snake ranked second among snakes in that analysis. Historical search interest is not a current ownership ranking and does not measure cultural fame or wild encounters.
American Pet Products Association, U.S. report announced September 24, 2025 Snakes were kept by 22% of U.S. reptile owners surveyed. The percentage is of reptile owners, not of all U.S. households, and it says nothing about the worldwide share of snake keepers.
Smithsonian National Zoo species profile Corn snakes are “widely popular as pets” and “the most commonly bred snake species in the pet industry.” That statement does not establish a numerical global rank across all species.

Using those limits, the first eight entries below are species identified in the veterinarian-reviewed PetMD overview of popular pet snakes. The final two are editorial additions representing highly recognizable snakes; the available measurements do not assign either a worldwide rank.

The 10 popular snakes to know

Snake Why it appears here Handling, habitat or commitment cue Measured worldwide rank?
Ball (royal) python (Python regius) Strongest recent survey signal; 35% of international respondents in the 2025 data set kept one. Plan for a long-term captive animal and species-specific enclosure, heating and feeding. No universal rank; survey result is respondent data.
Corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) Widely popular in the pet trade; Smithsonian calls it the most commonly bred pet snake. Adult length commonly reported by the Smithsonian as 61–182 cm (24–72 in); allow substantial enclosure length. Second among snakes in the 2004–2020 search analysis, not a current ownership rank.
Kingsnake Named by PetMD as a popular pet species. Choose enclosure and handling plans from the exact kingsnake species and its adult size. No comparable rank in the available evidence.
Milk snake Named by PetMD as a popular pet species. Locality and species identification matter when planning space and care. No comparable rank in the available evidence.
Garter snake Named by PetMD as a popular pet species. Confirm the species and legal status before acquiring one; care needs differ among garter snakes. No comparable rank in the available evidence.
Water snake Named by PetMD as a popular pet species. Verify habitat, humidity and enclosure requirements for the particular species. No comparable rank in the available evidence.
Green tree python Named by PetMD as a popular pet species. PetMD presents it as better suited to display than frequent handling; plan a secure, appropriately tall enclosure. No comparable rank in the available evidence.
Brazilian rainbow boa Named by PetMD as a popular pet species. Commit to the humidity, security and space requirements of a large, active boa before purchase. No comparable rank in the available evidence.
Boa constrictor Editorial addition for global recognition; not ranked by the cited surveys. Adult size varies by locality, so obtain locality-specific size information before building an enclosure. Not established by the available evidence.
Burmese python Editorial addition for global recognition; not ranked by the cited surveys. Its eventual size makes secure housing, handling logistics and legal checks essential. Not established by the available evidence.

1. Ball or royal python

Ball python is the common name used in North America; royal python is common in many other parts of the world. They are the same species, Python regius, not two separate entries. The 2026 survey coverage identified royal python as the most-kept reptile pet among its respondents: 35% selected it, based on responses collected in 74 countries during January–April 2025. That is the clearest current prominence signal in this evidence, but the survey’s self-selected recruitment means it cannot be read as a global ownership census.

#1 Best Overall
unipaws 50 Gallon Reptile Tank for Lizards, Leopard Geckos Enclosure Cage
  • 50 GALLON SPACIOUS ENCLOSURE: Measuring 36" x 17.5" x 18" (91.5x45x45.5cm), this large reptile terrarium provides ample room for climbing, exploring, and adding thick substrate layers. It is the perfect, comfortable habitat for lizards, and other reptiles.
  • OPTIMIZED FOR DESERT REPTILES: Crafted with a high-quality engineered wood-style build, this tank offers outstanding heat preservation, effortlessly locking in the high temperatures required by desert-dwelling species. The solid construction prevents heat loss, ensuring a cozy environment. (Note: Not recommended for high-humidity or aquatic setups).
  • ESCAPE-PROOF GLASS DOORS & LOCK: Features high-transparency sliding glass doors for a wide panoramic view and easy daily feeding. Equipped with a custom metal lock and specially designed silicone gap-seal bars, it completely eliminates the risk of your pets or live feeder insects escaping. Includes sleek door handles for smooth sliding.
  • INNOVATIVE CABLE MANAGEMENT: Designed with special rotating cable holes on the side panels (accommodating a maximum of 4 cables). This allows you to easily and neatly route cords for heating pads, thermometers, or UVB lamps while keeping the enclosure securely closed and 100% escape-proof.
  • AESTHETIC PET FURNITURE: Finished in an elegant black wood grain, this sturdy enclosure breaks away from the cold look of traditional all-glass tanks. It functions not just as a professional reptile habitat, but as a piece of modern home decor that blends seamlessly into your living room or bedroom setup.

Popularity does not remove the need for careful husbandry. A prospective keeper should have a secure enclosure, a reliable heat-control system, a feeding plan and access to a reptile veterinarian before bringing one home. Ask for the animal’s feeding history and source, and make sure local rules permit the species.

2. Corn snake

Corn snakes, Pantherophis guttatus, are native to the eastern United States. The Smithsonian describes orange or brownish-yellow coloration with red blotches, a rodent-based diet for adults, and a length of about 61–182 cm (24–72 in). In human care, the Smithsonian reports a lifespan of up to 23 years. That combination of conspicuous patterning, established captive breeding and broad availability helps explain their visibility as pets.

The Smithsonian’s wording is unusually strong: corn snakes are “widely popular as pets” and “the most commonly bred snake species in the pet industry.” The 2021 Google Trends study also placed corn snake second among snakes in its historical search analysis. Neither statement is a promise that every individual is easy to handle. Temperament varies, and a 23-year potential commitment should be part of the decision.

Legal details can be local. The Smithsonian notes protection in Georgia and special-concern status in Florida, so check state, county and municipal rules rather than assuming that captive-bred availability makes ownership legal everywhere.

3. Kingsnake

Kingsnakes are included because PetMD identifies them as popular pet snakes. “Kingsnake” covers several species and local forms, so the name alone is not enough to determine adult size, enclosure dimensions or legal requirements. Ask for the scientific name and locality, then match the enclosure and handling plan to that animal rather than to a generic kingsnake label.

4. Milk snake

Milk snakes also appear in PetMD’s popular-pet overview. As with kingsnakes, the common name represents more than one species. Confirm the exact identification, expected adult size and captive-breeding history before purchase. A bright pattern may attract a first-time keeper, but visual appeal is not a substitute for a realistic feeding, cleaning and veterinary plan.

5. Garter snake

Garter snakes are another PetMD-listed popular pet group. Different garter species can have different habitat and diet requirements, and some jurisdictions regulate collection or possession. Buy only from a lawful, traceable source and obtain species-specific care instructions. Their presence on a popularity list should not be interpreted as evidence that every garter snake has identical needs.

6. Water snake

Water snakes are included as a PetMD example of a popular pet snake. The common name is especially important to verify because “water snake” can refer to several species. Before committing, establish the animal’s adult dimensions, humidity and water-access requirements, enclosure security and feeding routine. Those details are not interchangeable among species.

7. Green tree python

Green tree pythons illustrate why popularity and handling suitability are separate questions. PetMD includes them among popular pet snakes but describes them as better display animals than handling companions. Their arboreal lifestyle means the enclosure must provide secure climbing space and appropriate vertical structure. Choose one if you value observation and can meet its environmental requirements, not because a popular list implies it will enjoy frequent handling.

8. Brazilian rainbow boa

Brazilian rainbow boas are named in PetMD’s popular-pet overview and are widely sought for their iridescent appearance. The available evidence does not provide a comparable worldwide ownership percentage or search rank for this species. Treat the name as a starting point for research: confirm adult size, humidity control, enclosure security, feeding history and veterinary access with a specialist before purchase.

9. Boa constrictor

Boa constrictor is an editorial addition rather than a measured top-ten entry. It represents a familiar large constrictor that many readers encounter in zoological, educational or captive settings. “Boa constrictor” can encompass different local forms with different adult sizes, so insist on a scientific identification and locality. Large snakes require stronger enclosures, a safe handling plan and a keeper who can manage the animal’s full adult life, not just its juvenile stage.

10. Burmese python

Burmese python is also an editorial addition, included for broad recognition rather than a documented numerical rank in the sources used here. Its eventual size makes planning unusually important: determine whether your home, equipment, budget, local law and emergency support can accommodate a very large snake. Never acquire one on the assumption that a young animal’s current enclosure will remain adequate.

How to choose among popular pet snake species

Start with the adult animal, not the hatchling

Write down the expected adult length, enclosure footprint and vertical space before paying a deposit. The Smithsonian’s 61–182 cm range for corn snakes shows how much an individual can grow; large boas and pythons demand an even more serious space assessment. If a seller cannot provide species and locality information, postpone the purchase.

Decide whether you want interaction or observation

Some keepers want a snake they can handle occasionally; others prefer a display animal. PetMD’s green tree python guidance demonstrates the distinction. No species should be called universally “beginner friendly”: suitability depends on the individual animal, the keeper’s knowledge and the quality of care available.

Budget for systems, not just the animal

  • Secure, escape-resistant enclosure sized for the adult.
  • Thermostat-controlled heating and reliable temperature monitoring.
  • Appropriate substrate, hides, furnishings and water container.
  • Food supply, cleaning materials and a contingency fund for veterinary care.
  • Transport and emergency plans if the snake becomes ill or the enclosure fails.

Check law and provenance

Rules can change by country, state, county or city. The Smithsonian’s notes on protections affecting corn snakes in Georgia and Florida show why a national reputation is not a legal guarantee. Confirm permits, possession limits, transport rules and whether wild collection is restricted. Prefer captive-bred animals with records that identify the species and source.

Why popularity should not decide the purchase by itself

A popular species may be common in advertisements while still being a poor match for your space, schedule or experience. Search trends can be driven by a viral video; trade surveys can overrepresent enthusiasts; and a species may be culturally famous without being widely kept. Use popularity to create a shortlist, then decide on adult size, environmental control, handling expectations, legal status and lifetime commitment.

The 2025 U.S. figure offers useful context rather than a shopping target: 22% of surveyed U.S. reptile owners kept snakes, but that does not mean 22% of households owned one. Pete Scott, president and CEO of the American Pet Products Association, said in the 2025 report announcement, “Younger generations are shaping the future of pet ownership, and fish and reptiles are at the center of that evolution.” The statement describes a trend in the U.S. pet market, not a guarantee that any particular species will suit a household.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Record the exact scientific name, locality and captive-bred status.
  2. Verify current local laws and any permit or enclosure requirements.
  3. Measure the space available for the adult animal, not the juvenile.
  4. Set up heating, monitoring, hides and water before the snake arrives.
  5. Ask the seller for feeding records, shedding history and veterinary information.
  6. Locate a veterinarian who treats reptiles and plan for a first examination.
  7. Arrange a backup caretaker and an escape-response plan.
  8. Reconsider the purchase if you cannot fund equipment, food and veterinary care for the animal’s full potential lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ball pythons and royal pythons different snakes?

No. Ball python and royal python are common names for the same species, Python regius. The name “royal python” is used widely outside North America.

What is the most popular pet snake?

The strongest current signal in the available evidence is the royal (ball) python: 35% of respondents in an international 2025 survey identified it as a kept reptile pet. Because the survey was self-selected, that result is not a census or definitive worldwide ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long can a corn snake live?

The Smithsonian reports a lifespan of up to 23 years in human care. Treat ownership as a multidecade commitment and plan for adult housing from the outset.

Why do different lists of popular snakes disagree?

They measure different things. Google search interest, keeper surveys, trade visibility and cultural recognition can produce different results, and none of the available sources combines those measures into a current worldwide ranking of exactly ten species.
