None of those benefits is guaranteed for every adopter. This list covers ten reasons the ASPCA and other animal-welfare groups commonly give. After the list, it covers what to check before you commit.
Ten reasons to adopt a shelter dog
These reasons draw on the ASPCA’s own articles on adopting a dog, “10 Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Dog” (2019) and “The Top 10 Benefits of Adopting a Dog” (2023). They describe possibilities, not proven outcomes. Plenty of adopters report these experiences, but the ASPCA material doesn’t show that adoption improves anyone’s physical or mental health.
1. You give a dog a home
The most direct benefit goes to the dog. A dog leaves a kennel for a household with a routine, a bed and a person who knows its name.
2. You may make room for another animal
The ASPCA notes that an adoption can free shelter space and resources for another animal. Many shelters are full: in a July 2026 announcement, ASPCA president and CEO Matt Bershadker said, “With many shelters across the country at capacity, it’s crucial that we work together to remove barriers to adoption and fostering, and expand access to the veterinary services that help keep pets with the families who love them.” Treat the effect as general, not as a measurable result of any single adoption.

3. You offer an animal another chance
Dogs end up in shelters for many reasons, including owner circumstances, loss of housing, stray status and medical costs. It would be wrong to assume every shelter dog was abused or neglected. Many were simply someone’s pet whose situation changed.
4. Companionship
A dog can be a daily presence at home, someone who greets you at the door and settles near you in the evening. How strong that bond becomes depends on the dog, the household and time.

9. An alternative to buying from a breeder or pet store
The ASPCA frames adoption as a choice that doesn’t rely on pet stores or online sellers, and its 2023 article makes strong claims about the sources of dogs sold there. Take that as the ASPCA’s position, not a universal rule. Not every breeder is irresponsible, and adoption alone doesn’t solve irresponsible breeding.
10. You support your local shelter
Adoption fees, and the attention an adoption brings to a shelter, support local animal care. Fees commonly go toward veterinary services, spay/neuter, vaccinations and food, but what a fee covers differs between organizations, so ask what yours includes.

The numbers behind the reasons
National figures give context, but your local shelter may look quite different. The ASPCA, using Shelter Animals Count data, estimates that 5.8 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2025, including 2.8 million dogs. It also estimates that 4.2 million shelter animals were adopted that year. These are national estimates and state figures can differ.
What to check before you adopt
Process, fees and timing vary
Each shelter or rescue sets its own application steps, fees and timelines. Read the organization’s current instructions, and ask staff or foster caregivers about the dog’s history, needs and day-to-day behavior. In an ASPCA survey of nearly 1,500 adopters at five U.S. shelters, conducted January to May 2011, roughly 80 percent said a staff member or volunteer was an important source of information about their pet. That survey is old and covered only five shelters, but it shows how much weight adopters give staff knowledge.
Match the dog to your household
There is no universal best shelter dog. In that same survey, more than 27 percent of dog adopters named appearance as the single most important reason for choosing their pet. Looks are a fine starting point, but compare these factors as well:
| Factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Energy and exercise | How much activity does this dog need each day, and can you provide it? |
| Size and space | Does the dog fit your home, yard or building rules? |
| Other people and animals | How does the dog behave around children, visitors and resident pets? |
| Medical needs | Are there ongoing conditions, medications or expected costs? |
| Your time | Can you commit to training and a patient adjustment period? |
| Support | What history and post-adoption help does the shelter offer? |
Don’t over-trust a kennel snapshot
The ASPCA’s position statement on shelter dog behavior assessments cautions that behavior in a kennel or during an assessment doesn’t fully predict behavior at home. Stress, context and history all matter. Weigh several sources, such as staff observations, foster reports, any known background and your own meetings with the dog, and don’t rely on one test or one short visit.

Preparing for the first days
- Set up a quiet safe area. A crate is one option, not a requirement. A gated corner or a dedicated room can work too.
- Pet-proof the home. Put away anything chewable or hazardous. Toys and baby gates are optional, chosen for your dog and your space.
- Plan veterinary care. Arrange a regular vet for checkups. If you consider pet insurance, compare waiting periods and exclusions, especially for pre-existing conditions, and ask your vet for advice.
- Expect an adjustment period. The ASPCA says the first days can be overwhelming. Consistent routines and patience help, and training and bonding continue over the following weeks. There is no guaranteed timetable, and some dogs settle faster than others.
If adopting isn’t possible right now
The ASPCA also points to fostering, volunteering and supporting your local shelter as ways to help. Some campaigns lower the cost of adopting. The ASPCA’s 2026 Rescue Effect, for example, listed more than 450 participating shelters and rescues and $2 million in grants to help 200 of them waive fees and support operating costs. Those figures apply only to that campaign, not to shelters in general, so ask your local organization what it offers.
