To keep the litter-box area clean, scoop waste daily, wash the tray on a regular schedule with mild unscented soap, and tidy the surrounding floor. Just as important, keep the box easy for your cat to reach and avoid strong fragrances that could put them off using it.
1. Scoop the box every day
Remove urine clumps and solid waste at least once a day. International Cat Care recommends scooping once or twice daily, so a second check can help if the box gets heavy use. ASPCA puts it plainly: “Virtually all cats like clean litter boxes, so scoop and change your cat’s litter at least once a day.” ASPCA’s litter-box guidance and International Cat Care’s guide both emphasize frequent waste removal.
2. Wash and refill the tray regularly
Use warm or hot water and a mild, unscented soap or cat-safe detergent. Rinse the tray thoroughly and let it dry before adding litter. Cleaning intervals vary: ASPCA recommends weekly washing, while International Cat Care suggests a thorough clean every one to two weeks, depending on use. ASPCA’s general-care guidance also says to wash and refill at least weekly, noting that complete litter replacement may be less frequent with clumping litter. Follow the instructions for your litter and adjust to how quickly the tray gets dirty.
3. Skip strong scents and ammonia
A fragrant box is not necessarily a more inviting one. Avoid scented deodorizers and strong-smelling cleaners around the tray; a scent your cat dislikes may discourage use. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners on urine accidents: urine contains ammonia, and its odor can draw a cat back to the same spot. ASPCA advises using unscented soap or baking soda for the box, and its general cat-care guidance cautions against ammonia and scented products.

4. Choose a quiet, accessible location
Place the box where your cat can reach it easily without navigating a loud or busy area or feeling cornered. A laundry area may be a poor choice if appliance noise bothers your cat; heat there can also intensify odors. The Humane Society of the United States recommends a quiet, low-traffic location. Keep the route to the box clear, including for cats that are older or have mobility difficulties.
5. Provide enough boxes and place them separately
In a multi-cat home, provide one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Put them in separate locations rather than lining them all up in one busy area. Separate placement gives cats access to another option if one box or location is uncomfortable. International Cat Care’s guidance covers box numbers and distribution.

6. Keep the box away from food and water
Place food and water bowls somewhere other than beside the litter tray. ASPCA notes that cats generally do not like eliminating close to where they eat. Separating these areas also makes it easier to clean the box without disturbing your cat’s feeding space. See ASPCA’s placement advice.
7. Make litter and box changes gradually
A clean setup only helps if your cat will use it. If your cat accepts unscented litter, it can help avoid fragrance around the tray. When changing litter or the box itself, avoid abrupt changes where possible. Litter scent, box size, covers, and liners can all affect whether a cat accepts a setup, according to ASPCA’s litter-box guidance.

8. Sweep or vacuum the nearby floor
Make tracked litter and dust part of the room’s ordinary cleaning routine. Sweep or vacuum around the box regularly, and clear debris from nearby corners. These are practical household tactics; the cited animal-welfare guidance does not establish that a particular mat, vacuum, or other tool prevents tracking.
9. Clean accidents with an enzymatic pet-odor cleaner
For urine or other pet accidents near the box, use an enzymatic cleaner labeled for pet odors and suitable for the affected surface. Follow its label directions, and keep your cat away until the area is ready for access. 10. Treat sudden changes in box use as a signal
If your cat starts eliminating outside the box, do not assume that a stronger deodorizer or more frequent sweeping will solve the problem. Avoidance can have medical, behavioral, location, or litter-preference causes. Check whether the box is accessible and the setup has changed, and contact your veterinarian when appropriate—especially if the change is sudden or persists. ASPCA discusses possible causes, and its general-care guidance advises veterinary attention when a cat stops using the box.
