They hunt animal prey in Southeast Asian forests, and their ranges, social behavior, calls, and conservation status vary by species. Here are ten facts about what makes them distinctive—and where species-specific evidence matters.
Some tarsier facts apply broadly, while others come from studies of particular species. The distinctions below help explain what is known without treating one species as a stand-in for them all.

Key takeaways
- Tarsiers are haplorhine primates in the family Tarsiidae, not monkeys or lemurs.
- The Mammal Diversity Database family list reviewed in September 2026 includes 14 living species in three genera; taxonomic counts can change.
- Tarsiers are nocturnal hunters that eat insects and, in some cases, small vertebrates.
- They are adapted for clinging and leaping, but a single maximum jump distance should not be applied to every species.
- Calls, social patterns, ranges, and conservation assessments vary by species.
- The Philippine tarsier has a documented ultrasonic call; that finding is not a claim about every tarsier.
What are tarsiers?
Tarsiers are small primates in their own family, Tarsiidae. They belong to the haplorhine branch, which also includes monkeys and apes, but tarsiers themselves are neither monkeys nor lemurs.
Tarsiers live across a patchwork of Southeast Asian islands. Philippine, western, and eastern tarsiers have different ranges; no one species occupies the full family range. The University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web account of the tarsier family provides further background on their classification.

10 terrific facts about tarsiers
1. Tarsiers are their own primate family
Tarsiers belong to Tarsiidae, a distinct primate family within the haplorhine branch. That branch also includes monkeys and apes, but tarsiers are not either of those groups. Older sources may call tarsiers “prosimians,” but that shorthand can obscure their relationship to other primates.
2. How many tarsier species are there?
The Mammal Diversity Database family list reviewed in September 2026 contains 14 living tarsier species in three genera: Carlito, Cephalopachus, and Tarsius. Taxonomic lists can change as classifications are revised, so this count is tied to that source and review date.
3. Tarsiers are nocturnal hunters
Tarsiers are mainly active after dark. Their large eyes and sensitive hearing help them locate prey in low light, though sensory details documented for one species should not automatically be applied to every tarsier.
4. Their bodies are built for clinging and leaping
Elongated hind limbs and anatomy around the ankle, or tarsal region, support tarsiers’ characteristic vertical clinging-and-leaping movement through vegetation. They move between supports and launch toward prey, but a single record jumping distance should not be presented as universal for all species.
5. What do tarsiers eat?
Tarsiers eat animal prey. Insects are an important food source in accounts of studied species, and some tarsiers also catch small vertebrates. Their diets vary with species and habitat; they are not miniature fruit-eating monkeys.

6. Tarsiers live across a patchwork of islands
Tarsier ranges are spread across Southeast Asian islands, with different species or groups occupying different areas. Give a species or group when describing a location rather than implying that any one tarsier lives throughout the family’s full range.
7. Do tarsiers live alone or in families?
Social patterns differ among tarsiers and may not be captured by a simple “solitary” or “group-living” label. An animal resting alone does not prove it has no social contact, and animals sleeping together does not establish that every member forages together.
8. Can humans hear tarsiers calling?
At least one tarsier’s call reaches ultrasound: a vocalization around 70 kHz is documented for the Philippine tarsier. That species-specific finding should not be treated as a measurement for every tarsier or every call.

9. Are tarsiers the smallest primates?
Tarsiers are small primates, but it is better not to describe the entire family as definitively the world’s smallest primate. Species differ in size, and the ranking depends on which species and measurement are being compared.
10. Are tarsiers endangered?
There is no single conservation category for all tarsiers. A reviewed conservation guide reports the Philippine tarsier as Near Threatened, the western tarsier as Vulnerable, and the Siau Island tarsier as Critically Endangered. Check the current assessment for the exact species before publication or travel.

Threats also vary by species and region. The western tarsier account identifies forest conversion, fires, logging, illegal pet collection, and pesticide contamination among pressures affecting that species. The ESABII account, summarizing IUCN material, reports habitat loss of 30% or more over the prior 20 years as part of the justification for the western tarsier’s Vulnerable assessment.
How are tarsier facts different from species facts?
Family-level descriptions are useful, but a range, call, social pattern, or conservation assessment may apply only to a particular species. These examples show why species identity and source context matter.

How can children remember these tarsier facts?
A tarsier plush toy can give children a hands-on reminder of these wide-eyed primates and make the facts easier to remember. Product availability, listings, and stock can change, so check current details before buying. A plush is an educational keepsake, not a substitute for seeing tarsiers responsibly through a reputable zoo, sanctuary, or wildlife education program.
Why are tarsiers such remarkable primates?
Tarsiers combine nocturnal hunting with specialized movement and senses. Their animal-based diets, island ranges, social patterns, calls, and conservation needs differ across species, making species-specific evidence important.
The Bottom Line
Tarsiers are small, nocturnal primates in their own family. They hunt animal prey and are adapted for clinging and leaping, but their ranges, social behavior, calls, and conservation status vary—so check the evidence for the species being discussed.
