Choose a toilet paper roll toy to match your cat’s play style
These ten ideas range from unmodified cardboard to food puzzles and display crafts. They are options, not a guarantee that a particular cat will play with or safely tolerate every design. The Catster roundup labels all ten easy, but it does not provide comparative testing or measurements of how engaging they are.

How to make the folded-tube treat puzzle
This is the clearest option when you want an interactive toy with food. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says, “This toy stimulates your cat’s hunting instincts and encourages problem-solving.” Use a few pieces of your cat’s usual kibble or treats; specialty treats are not required.

- Take one clean, dry, empty toilet paper roll and check that it is not already badly crushed or shedding.
- Fold one end of the tube inward to close it.
- Cut a few holes in the sides. Make each opening large enough for a piece of kibble or a treat to slip through.
- Add a small amount of kibble or treats, then fold the other end inward to close the tube.
- Set it down and let your cat bat it to work food through the holes. Supervise the first play session.
If food does not fall out, check that the holes are large enough for the pieces you used. If it falls out too easily, use fewer or smaller openings next time, while keeping them passable for the food. Stop if your cat starts eating the cardboard.
Make the other toys with simple, cautious adaptations
Rolling and cut-cardboard toys
For the simplest version, offer an unmodified empty roll for batting and chasing. To make the cut-strip or cut-tab versions, use scissors to cut the tube into a light, ball-like or wheel-like shape. The Catster descriptions do not specify exact dimensions, so keep cuts simple and remove any ragged edges before offering it. These toys are likely to be destroyed sooner than a whole tube; discard them when they shed pieces.

Box and basket puzzles
For a cat puzzle box, place several rolls in a box and scatter a little dry food among them. Atlanta Humane Society also describes putting rolls in a box and spreading dry food inside. A larger box or more rolls can make the search more involved, but the sources do not quantify difficulty or engagement.
A mega puzzle or tower dispenser can use a basket or box as a holder for several rolls. Keep the base stable and have an adult secure the structure so it cannot tip during play. Do not leave exposed glue or small attached parts where a cat can chew them; the Humane Society of Harford County cautions, “Don’t glue anything to the cardboard as a cat may ingest it.”

Ball and decorative projects
A cut-strip ball can be assembled from cardboard strips, but the referenced project uses staples or glue. Catster warns that a cat could eat a staple and says play should be supervised. For a chew-prone cat, skip both staples and glued-on components; inspect any loose cardboard ball and remove it if it sheds or is chewed.
The decorative roll cat uses construction paper, coloring materials and glue, and may be more satisfying as an owner’s craft than as a cat toy. Treat it as a display item rather than something to leave with a cat that mouths objects.

Keep play supervised and stop when a cat chews the toy
- Offer clean, dry cardboard, and supervise your cat with a new toy. AAHA specifically recommends supervision for toys, especially those with small components, string or ribbon.
- Avoid glued decorations on cardboard a cat may mouth. Skip staples or loose add-ons if your cat chews or swallows objects.
- Discard a tube or toy that is soggy, badly shredded or loose enough to shed pieces. This is practical handling advice; the cited sources do not set a specific discard interval.
- If your cat tries to ingest a non-food toy, take it away and choose another enrichment activity. If you suspect your cat has swallowed a piece, contact a veterinarian; Atlanta Humane Society warns that inappropriate-object ingestion can cause intestinal obstruction.
- Have children use scissors only with appropriate adult supervision. Sharp tools are for making the toy, not for play.
No quantified evidence in the cited sources establishes that these projects prevent boredom or illness, or that all cats enjoy them. A whole tube, a simple cut tube, or the folded treat puzzle are practical starting points; watch how your individual cat responds.
