Seizures, weakness, a head tilt, circling, falls, changes in walking, disorientation, or unusual behavior are reasons to contact your cat’s veterinarian. Sudden or severe symptoms may need emergency care now; do not wait for a neurology appointment when your cat cannot walk, has a seizure, or has suffered a head injury.
When should you seek emergency care?
Call an emergency veterinarian promptly for a seizure, sudden weakness or paralysis, a head injury, or an abrupt, severe change in balance or walking. The University of Sydney’s emergency guidance also identifies acute head tilt and unsteady walking as urgent triage concerns. Its signs guidance includes inability to walk, dragging or knuckling the feet, changes in facial symmetry, and altered walking among signs requiring attention.

Seizure-duration guidance varies by source. The University of Illinois says immediate veterinary attention is indicated if a seizure lasts five minutes or more or if there are more than two episodes within 24 hours. Cornell advises veterinary consultation without delay for seizures occurring less than 10 or 15 minutes apart. These are source-specific thresholds, not a single universal rule; if an episode is prolonged, repeated, or otherwise alarming, contact an emergency veterinarian rather than waiting to see whether a referral is needed.

After a head injury, Cornell advises immediate emergency transport and minimizing your cat’s movement during transit. A secure carrier can help with transport, but it is not a substitute for veterinary care.

Five signs that may warrant a neurology discussion
These signs can prompt veterinary assessment and a conversation about referral. They cannot identify the cause on their own.
1. Seizures or seizure-like episodes
A seizure is a reason to contact a veterinarian, but an event that looks like a seizure may have another explanation. Describe what you observed rather than trying to diagnose the episode from its appearance. The University of Illinois articles “Is My Pet Having Seizures?” and “I Think My Pet Had a Seizure. Now What?” discuss recognizing and responding to possible seizures.

A head tilt or balance problem deserves veterinary assessment, but it does not by itself prove a brain disorder or seizure. A vestibular episode can resemble a seizure or stroke to an observer and may originate in the inner or middle ear or in vestibular areas of the brain, according to the University of Illinois. Sudden or pronounced balance changes should be triaged urgently.

4. Circling, wobbliness, or altered walking
Circling and falling are among the signs listed by the University of Illinois neurology service. Stumbling, rolling, loss of coordination, dragging the feet, or knuckling them under are also important to report. Abrupt or severe walking changes—including inability or reluctance to walk—call for urgent veterinary advice.
5. Disorientation or behavior change
Disorientation or an unusual change in behavior can justify a veterinary assessment. Cornell also describes changes in interaction, gait, or balance among possible feline neurologic signs. These observations may help the veterinarian decide whether a neurologic evaluation is appropriate, but they do not establish a specific diagnosis.

What a veterinary neurologist evaluates
Veterinary neurology focuses on disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and neuromuscular system. The University of Illinois neurology service describes comprehensive diagnostic testing and advanced medical and surgical treatment options. That does not mean every cat with one of these signs will need a specialist, a particular test, or a specific treatment.
Your primary veterinarian can examine your cat and advise whether referral is appropriate. A neurologic evaluation may include observation of gait and assessment of cranial nerves, as described in the Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of neurologic evaluation in cats. The next steps depend on the findings and your cat’s circumstances.

What to note before speaking with the veterinarian
- When the sign began and whether it appeared suddenly or gradually.
- What happened before, during, and after an episode, and how long it lasted.
- Whether the sign has happened again and how your cat moves or behaves between episodes.
The University of Illinois advises noting seizure behavior before, during, and after an episode and its length. A video may help the veterinarian assess what happened, but record only if it is safe and does not delay emergency care.
