“Water dog” is a practical grouping, not an official guarantee that every dog will swim or enjoy water. The label covers breeds developed to help fishermen, locate and retrieve birds, work as waterfowl dogs, or perform other jobs around waterways. Some are specialist swimmers; others are better understood as curly-coated working dogs with a historical connection to water.
Ten recognizable examples are the Portuguese Water Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, Spanish Water Dog, Barbet, Lagotto Romagnolo, American Water Spaniel, Newfoundland, Poodle, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and Curly-Coated Retriever. Their origins, exercise requirements, size, and grooming demands differ substantially, so choose an individual dog—not a label—and discuss its needs with a responsible breeder, rescue, and veterinarian.

What counts as a water dog?
Unlike a formal kennel-club group, “water dog” describes a working connection with water. Historical jobs included carrying messages or gear for fishermen, driving fish toward nets, locating and flushing birds, and retrieving waterfowl from rivers, marshes, and coastal water. A few breeds later moved into different work: the Lagotto Romagnolo is now particularly associated with truffle hunting.
Working history also does not predict an individual dog’s behavior perfectly. A puppy may be cautious around deep water, dislike cold conditions, or lack the physical ability to swim safely. Introduce water gradually, use a canine life jacket in unfamiliar or moving water, and never treat swimming as a replacement for daily walks, training, scent work, or other mental exercise.

The first five profiles below have breed-specific descriptions supporting the listed history or care points. The final five names are recognized in the American Kennel Club’s breed index, but a detailed claim about their size, temperament, exercise, or coat care should come from the relevant breed standard or parent club rather than from the generic “water dog” label.
Five breeds with clearly documented water or working connections
1. Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog is a medium-sized, athletic dog bred as an all-around helper to fishermen. Its work could involve tasks around boats and shorelines rather than one narrowly defined retrieving job. That broad background helps explain why modern dogs often need both physical activity and purposeful training.
The coat is made of tight curls and is described as low-shedding, but low shedding does not mean low maintenance. Regular, extensive grooming is needed to keep the curls clean, separated, and free of mats. Owners should budget time for professional trimming or learn a consistent home routine. The breed profile also calls for vigorous daily exercise. Swimming can be an enjoyable outlet for a dog that likes water, but it should supplement—not replace—walking, obedience work, and interactive problem-solving.

The Irish Water Spaniel is a hardworking field spaniel and a strong swimmer. Its crisp, curled coat and distinctive tapering “rat tail” make it easy to recognize. The breed’s history points to active field work, so a household should plan for substantial daily exercise and regular opportunities to use the dog’s nose and retrieve.

Swimming ability is not a substitute for a training plan. A young or inexperienced dog still needs gradual water introductions, close supervision, and a safe exit from ponds, pools, or shorelines. Ask a breeder or rescue about the individual dog’s confidence, previous water exposure, and response to wet, cold, or fast-moving conditions.
3. Spanish Water Dog
The Spanish Water Dog has a dual-purpose history as a herder and waterfowl retriever. It is described as lively and vigilant, traits that can be valuable in work but demanding in a home without structured activity. Daily exercise should include mental engagement, such as scent games, training sequences, or controlled retrieving, rather than relying only on free running.
Its woolly, curly coat needs a very different routine from a brushed curly coat. Guidance for the breed says the coat should not be brushed; first-time owners learning to manage cords should seek experienced instruction. The Spanish Water Dog Club of America’s AKC standard, effective February 2023, states: "He must always be shown in a natural coat and never be aesthetically groomed in any way." That sentence is a show-standard instruction, not a complete home-grooming manual. At home, owners still need to check the skin, separate developing cords appropriately, remove debris, and arrange practical care with someone familiar with the breed.
4. Barbet
The Barbet is a French water dog historically used to locate, flush, and retrieve birds. Those are distinct tasks: finding game, making it move, and bringing it back. A Barbet therefore may enjoy activities that combine scent work, steadiness, and retrieving instead of swimming alone.

The long, dense curls and beard make coat care a significant ownership consideration. Guidance for the breed calls for a full brush-out and comb-through, with attention to areas that tangle easily around the ears, beard, legs, and furnishings. Dry the coat thoroughly after swimming and inspect for plant material or small knots. A brush or comb is breed-specific equipment here; it should not be treated as a universal tool for every water-associated breed.
5. Lagotto Romagnolo
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian breed also known as the Romagna Water Dog. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale identifies Italy as its country of origin. Although its earlier identity is connected with water, the breed is especially known today for truffle hunting, a scent-driven job that can be performed far from a shoreline.
Its dense, curly coat needs regular trimming and grooming to avoid mats. Owners should establish a maintenance schedule before bringing one home and learn how to examine the skin beneath the curls. Truffle work, scent games, and training can provide the mental challenge expected of a working dog; a dog does not have to swim to have a satisfying, breed-appropriate routine.

6. American Water Spaniel
The American Water Spaniel is a recognized breed name in the AKC comparison index and is often included when people assemble lists of water-associated dogs. The available index confirmation alone does not establish a detailed account of its history, adult size, temperament, exercise requirement, or grooming routine. Use the breed’s current standard and parent-club guidance for those decisions, and evaluate the particular dog you may adopt.

7. Newfoundland
Newfoundland is another recognized breed name that appears in broad water-dog overviews. A generic list should not be used to infer a dog’s swimming ability, heat tolerance, grooming needs, or exercise level. Obtain breed-specific information and ask how an individual dog has behaved around water before planning activities such as boating or open-water swimming.
8. Poodle
Poodle is commonly associated with water-dog discussions and is listed in the AKC breed index. That inclusion does not, by itself, verify a single “water-dog” profile for every variety or individual. Coat length, clip, age, fitness, and prior experience all affect practical care. Consult a breed-specific standard and groomer before choosing a routine.
9. Chesapeake Bay Retriever
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a natural candidate for lists that include waterfowl retrievers, and the breed name is confirmed in the AKC index. For a responsible comparison, however, confirm its specific working history, size range, activity needs, and coat care through current breed sources rather than assuming they match another retriever.

The Curly-Coated Retriever is often grouped with retrieving breeds in water-dog lists and is also present in the AKC index. Its name alone is not enough to establish detailed care or temperament advice. A prospective owner should read the current breed standard, speak with experienced owners, and meet dogs from the line or rescue they are considering.

How to choose among water-associated breeds
Match the job, not just the swimming image
Decide whether you want a dog for boating companionship, retrieving games, scent work, hiking, herding-style training, or simply an active family life. Fishermen’s helpers, bird dogs, waterfowl retrievers, and truffle specialists were selected for different behaviors. A dog bred to search and alert may need more mental work than a household expects, while a retrieving-oriented dog may become frustrated without structured games.
Plan the weekly workload
- Provide daily physical activity appropriate to the dog’s age, health, and conditioning.
- Add training, scent games, food puzzles, or controlled retrieving so exercise includes the brain.
- Increase activity gradually for puppies and dogs returning from illness or injury.
- Ask a veterinarian before starting repeated high-impact swimming, long-distance runs, or cold-water work.
Budget for the coat
Curly, woolly, and dense coats can hide mats, burrs, dampness, and skin irritation. Portuguese Water Dogs require extensive grooming; Barbets need thorough brushing and combing; Lagotti need regular trimming; and Spanish Water Dogs should not be brushed. These are not interchangeable routines. Ask for a written grooming schedule, learn the correct tools for the specific coat, and identify a groomer before the first appointment is due.
Assess water safety
- Introduce water in shallow, calm conditions and let the dog choose its pace.
- Use a properly fitted canine life jacket in boats, deep water, currents, or unfamiliar locations.
- Keep dogs away from unsafe ice, algae blooms, polluted water, steep banks, and strong tides.
- Rinse and dry the coat after swimming, then check ears, paws, skin, and hidden tangles.
- Never leave a dog unattended near a pool, dock, river, or open shoreline.
What the “water dog” label cannot tell you
A breed name cannot guarantee that an individual dog will retrieve, swim, tolerate grooming, or enjoy a busy household. Age, health, socialization, previous experiences, breeding choices, and rescue history all matter. Meet dogs where possible, ask breeders or rescue staff for specific observations, and have a veterinarian assess fitness before making water activities a regular part of life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
