10 Ways to Dog-Proof Your Christmas Tree

Dog-proofing a Christmas tree takes more than choosing an artificial tree. Use these ten layers of protection to prevent tipping, chewing, swallowing, electrical injuries, and access to tree water.

The safest way to dog-proof a Christmas tree is to combine physical separation with safer decorations and supervision. Start by making the tree difficult to knock over, then place a stable barrier around it, remove linear and edible decorations, protect electrical cords, block access to tree water, and keep the dog away whenever nobody can actively manage the area. No ornament, spray, skirt, or cord cover makes a determined dog’s unsupervised access risk-free.

Christmas trees create several different hazards at once: a dog can pull down the tree, chew lights, swallow tinsel or ornament hooks, drink the tree water, break glass ornaments, or eat holiday plants and food. An artificial tree is not automatically safe; it can still fall, shed needles or plastic pieces, and contain accessible lights, wires, and decorations.

Use the following ten measures together, adjusting them for your dog’s size, age, chewing habits, and ability to climb or jump.

1. Anchor the tree so it cannot tip

Choose a wide, stable stand and place the tree on a level surface away from narrow walkways. For a full-size tree or a dog that bumps, jumps, or pulls at branches, add a discreet wall or ceiling anchor where practical. A thin, strong tether attached high on the trunk can reduce the chance of a tip-over, provided it is installed according to the anchor and tree manufacturer’s instructions.

An anchor is a backup layer, not a substitute for a barrier. A falling tree can injure a dog and break ornaments, expose electrical connections, or spill tree water. If you use a Christmas tree anchor strap or tree stabilization kit, check the attachment points periodically and do not assume that a generic strap has been independently tested for a dog pulling on the tree.

2. Put a stable gate or exercise pen around the tree

Physical exclusion is the most reliable solution when a dog is persistent or cannot be supervised. Place a freestanding pet gate, puppy exercise pen, or other stable barrier around the entire tree—not merely across one side. The barrier should also prevent access to the stand, water reservoir, cords, and presents beneath the tree.

When shopping for a Christmas tree fence for dogs or dog gate for Christmas tree, measure the tree’s widest footprint and account for the stand, skirt, gifts, and the dog’s reach through the bars. Choose a height and spacing suitable for the individual dog. A small decorative fence may be easy for a large dog to jump, push, or knock over, so do not describe any gate as escape-proof without product-specific evidence. Test it before decorating and secure it if your dog can move it.

A gate is especially important when you are cooking, sleeping, leaving home, or entertaining guests. If your dog can climb or defeat the barrier, close the room or use a secure, comfortable confinement area instead.

3. Keep the lower branches boring

The bottom portion of the tree is the high-impact zone for noses, paws, tails, and chewing. Leaving the lowest branches undecorated is often safer than trying to make them tempting but “dog-proof.” You can decorate the upper section while keeping reachable branches bare.

If you do decorate within reach, use large, durable decorations made from materials such as sturdy plastic, wood, or fabric. Avoid anything fragile, sentimental, sharp, small enough to swallow, or valuable enough that a tail bump would be a disaster. Keep decorations away from the outer tips of branches, where they are easiest to grab.

4. Skip tinsel, ribbon, string, and edible garlands

Do not put tinsel on a dog-accessible tree. The same rule applies to ribbon, twine, string lights with loose strands, popcorn or cranberry chains, and similar linear decorations. If swallowed, these materials can become gastrointestinal foreign bodies, cause an obstruction, or damage the intestines. Treatment may require emergency surgery.

  • Sets up in seconds; simply unfold, shape, and connect (no tools needed); folds flat for easy transport and storage
  • Note: Do not leave pets unattended outdoors

Putting tinsel “higher up” is not a dependable compromise: dogs can pull strands down, and fallen pieces can be swallowed later. Also keep candy canes, popcorn strings, salt-dough ornaments, and other food-based decorations away from the tree. They invite chewing and may contain ingredients that are unsafe for dogs, including excessive salt, chocolate, or sugar-free sweeteners such as xylitol.

5. Use durable ornaments and fasten them securely

Glass ornaments can shatter into pieces that cut a dog’s mouth or paws. Metal ornament hooks can puncture tissue or cause problems if chewed and swallowed. Replace fragile decorations in reachable areas with shatterproof Christmas ornaments made from durable plastic, wood, or fabric, while remembering that “shatterproof” does not mean safe to ingest.

Secure each ornament firmly to a branch. Closed loops, sturdy ties, or purpose-made ornament anchors can be preferable to exposed wire hooks, especially on lower branches. Still remove any ornament that is small, sharp, toxic, or easy to detach. Put irreplaceable or breakable ornaments somewhere your dog cannot reach, such as a high display that is not positioned above a climbable piece of furniture.

6. Protect and reroute electrical cords

Chewing a Christmas-light cord can cause oral burns, electric shock, heart or lung complications, and death. Route cords away from the floor and lower branches when possible. Secure them against a wall or behind furniture, keep plug connections inaccessible, and inspect the entire run each day for tooth marks, fraying, crushed insulation, or loose connections.

A pet cord protector or chew-resistant wire cover can add a layer of protection. For example, the Small Pet Select Heavy Duty Cord Cover is marketed for cords used around puppies, dogs, and cats and described as a cut-to-length expandable sleeve. Product descriptions are not a guarantee that a determined dog cannot chew through it, however. A cover should never be treated as permission to leave a known cord-chewer alone with an energized tree.

Unplug the lights before moving, watering, or adjusting the tree. If your dog has chewed a live cord, switch off power safely if you can do so without touching the damaged cable or dog, and seek veterinary advice promptly—even if the dog initially appears normal.

7. Block access to live-tree water

Prevent your dog from reaching the tree stand’s reservoir. Tree water can become stagnant and contaminated with bacteria, sap, or oils. It may also contain preservatives, fertilizer, or other additives, which can cause stomach upset or other problems. The safest approach is to place the whole tree behind a barrier that blocks the stand.

A tree-water cover or covered Christmas tree stand can provide an additional layer, but a cover may not stop a determined dog. A tree skirt is primarily visual decoration and is not a reliable barrier. Do not add chemicals, fertilizer, aspirin, or preservatives to the water if your dog might reach it, and clean up spills immediately.

8. Avoid flocking and remove fallen needles

Flocking—the artificial “snow” applied to branches—can cause problems if swallowed. Real and artificial needles may also irritate or injure the gastrointestinal tract when chewed or ingested. Vacuum or sweep fallen needles frequently, keep the dog away during cleanup, and inspect the area around the stand and barrier.

If your dog persistently mouths branches, consider an unflocked artificial tree or remove the tree from the dog’s environment altogether. An artificial tree reduces some concerns associated with sap and fallen needles, but it still needs to be anchored and separated from the dog because plastic needles, lights, decorations, and the tree itself can be chewed or pulled down.

9. Keep other holiday hazards out of reach

The tree is rarely the only holiday risk. Use a closed room, high inaccessible storage, or a physical barrier for:

  • Plants: Keep mistletoe, holly, lilies, and other holiday plants away from dogs. Poinsettias are generally associated with irritation and gastrointestinal upset rather than being among the most deadly holiday plants, but they should still remain inaccessible.
  • Candles: Open flames can burn a dog, start a fire, or be knocked over by a tail. Use flameless battery-operated candles where suitable, but secure the loose batteries because punctured or swallowed batteries can seriously injure a pet.
  • Food and gifts: Keep chocolate, wrapped food, candy, fatty leftovers, and sugar-free products containing xylitol away from dogs. A wrapped package is not safe if your dog can tear it open.
  • Batteries and small objects: Keep button batteries, ornament parts, hooks, and packaging out of reach before and after gifts are opened.

For open flames, flameless battery-operated candles are a useful alternative, but they are not risk-free. Store spare and removed batteries in a closed container and dispose of used ones promptly.

10. Introduce the tree gradually and supervise or confine your dog

Set up the undecorated tree first and let your dog investigate it briefly while you supervise. Reward calm behavior with praise, treats, or a suitable toy. If the dog noses or mouths a branch, calmly redirect them to an appropriate chew or move them away; do not rely on deterrent sprays or essential oils as the primary safety plan without veterinary guidance.

Add lights and ornaments only after the dog can remain calm around the bare tree. Keep normal walks, meals, rest, and enrichment in place. During parties, visitors, loud music, or unusual activity, give your dog a quiet retreat with familiar bedding and safe enrichment. Stress and excitement can make a normally settled dog more likely to investigate the tree.

Supervision means active management, not merely being somewhere else in the room. If you are not able to intervene immediately, close the door, use a secure barrier, or confine the dog comfortably away from the tree. An indoor pet camera can provide an alert or help you check the room, but it cannot prevent chewing, swallowing, or a tip-over.

A practical setup checklist

  • Use a broad, stable stand on a level surface.
  • Add a wall or ceiling anchor for a full-size or easily disturbed tree.
  • Install a stable gate or exercise pen around the tree whenever the dog may approach it.
  • Leave low branches bare or use only large, durable decorations.
  • Remove tinsel, ribbon, string, edible garlands, candy canes, and salt-dough ornaments.
  • Replace reachable glass ornaments and exposed hooks with durable alternatives and secure fasteners.
  • Route and cover cords, inspect them for damage, and unplug lights when unattended.
  • Make the stand and tree water inaccessible; never add chemicals if the dog might drink it.
  • Remove flocking and fallen needles if your dog chews branches or debris.
  • Store plants, candles, batteries, chocolate, xylitol products, and wrapped food securely.
  • Use a quiet retreat or separate room during gatherings.
  • Confine the dog away from the tree whenever active supervision is unavailable.

What to do if your dog chews or swallows something

Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog chews an electrical cord or swallows tinsel, ribbon, a hook, a salt-dough ornament, a battery, a toxic plant, chocolate, xylitol, or an unknown substance. Do not pull string or ribbon from the mouth or anus, and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically tells you to.

Seek urgent veterinary care for vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, loss of appetite, tremors, breathing difficulty, mouth burns, collapse, seizures, or other concerning signs. In the United States, the Pet Poison Helpline lists a 24/7 telephone service at (855) 764-7661, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center lists (888) 426-4435. Follow the current instructions and fees, if any, provided by those services. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency veterinarian or the poison service available in your country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an artificial Christmas tree safe for dogs?

Not automatically. Artificial trees avoid some sap and needle issues, but dogs can still chew plastic branches, pull down the tree, access lights and cords, or swallow ornaments and small pieces. Anchor the tree, use a physical barrier, and supervise or confine your dog.

Will a Christmas tree skirt stop my dog from drinking the water?

Usually not. A determined dog may push aside or crawl under a skirt. Block access to the entire stand with a gate or pen; use a tree-water cover only as an additional layer, not as a guarantee.

Can I put tinsel on the upper branches if my dog cannot reach them?

It is safer to skip tinsel altogether. Dogs can pull strands down, and loose pieces can later be swallowed. Ribbon, twine, popcorn or cranberry garlands, and other linear decorations pose similar foreign-body risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my dog chews Christmas lights?

Turn off power safely without touching a damaged live cable or the dog, then contact a veterinarian promptly. Electrical injuries can cause burns and internal complications even when the dog seems well initially.

The Bottom Line

Dog-proof the tree in layers: stabilize it, surround it with a genuinely sturdy barrier, remove swallowable and breakable decorations, protect cords, block tree water, and separate your dog whenever you cannot actively supervise. Physical prevention is more dependable than a spray, camera, skirt, or single “pet-safe” product.
