10 Ways to Tell If Your Cat Is Overweight—and Help Safely

A scale cannot tell the whole story. Learn the body-condition clues for feline overweight and obesity, why veterinary assessment matters, and how to support gradual, safe weight loss.

A cat’s weight is best assessed by body condition, not by a scale number or a particular look. If your cat may be carrying extra weight, a veterinarian can confirm the assessment, check for related health concerns and set a safe, individualized plan. These 10 facts explain what to look for and how to help without resorting to crash diets.

1. Body condition tells you more than a number on the scale

A scale reading alone cannot tell whether a cat is overweight: a healthy weight varies with the individual cat’s frame and build. Veterinary teams use a body condition score (BCS), commonly measured on a nine-point scale, alongside a physical examination and weight history.

Use appearance and touch as clues, not a diagnosis. At an ideal condition, a cat generally has a visible waist behind the ribs when viewed from above, ribs that can be felt under a slight fat covering, and minimal abdominal fat. Cornell’s guide to feeding your cat illustrates these body-condition cues.

2. Overweight and obese are different body-condition categories

AAHA/AAFP guidance classifies a cat with a BCS of 6/9 or 7/9 as overweight, and 8/9 or higher as obese. At the high end of the scale, a BCS of 9/9, the ribs are not palpable and the waist is absent. A veterinarian can score your cat and explain what the result means for that individual.

3. A fluffy coat or hanging belly can make visual guesses unreliable

Long fur can hide the outline of a waist, and a loose pouch of skin on the abdomen does not by itself establish obesity. Look at your cat from above and from the side, and gently feel the ribs rather than relying only on photographs or appearance. If you are unsure, ask your veterinary team to demonstrate how they assess body condition.

4. The prevalence figures vary with the source and method

AAHA’s 2024 consumer article says that 61% of the nation’s cats are overweight or obese. That is the figure reported by AAHA in that article, not a newly measured or universal worldwide rate. Separately, the AAHA/AAFP 2021 guidance reports that published estimates of feline obesity prevalence range from 1.8% to 40%. The broad range reflects differences among study populations and definitions; it is not a confidence interval or a single current prevalence estimate.

5. Extra weight is associated with important health concerns

Excess weight can raise concerns about conditions including diabetes, arthritis and liver disease, according to AAHA; Cornell also notes associations with diabetes and arthritis. These are risks, not predictions that a particular cat will develop any one condition. A veterinary assessment can consider weight alongside your cat’s overall health.

6. Start with a veterinary assessment, not a home diet

Arrange a veterinary visit before changing your cat’s food or restricting portions. AAHA recommends checking for underlying conditions, assessing nutritional needs and setting realistic goals. The veterinarian can establish a target weight and decide how often to monitor progress. This matters especially if your cat has other health issues or is already eating less than usual.

7. Calorie targets should be based on an individual goal

AAHA advises calculating calories using the cat’s ideal weight and adjusting the plan for the individual patient. There is no reliable universal daily calorie target in the evidence here that can safely replace that assessment. One figure in the AAHA 2021 guidance—52 ± 4.9 kcal/kg0.711 as mean intake reported for cats during a 12-week weight-loss period—is research context, not a feeding prescription for your cat.

8. Simply serving less of the usual food can create a nutrition problem

Reducing the amount of a maintenance food without professional guidance may also reduce essential vitamins and minerals. AAHA/AAFP notes that veterinary weight-loss diets are formulated to supply adequate nutrients at reduced calories. Ask your veterinarian whether a therapeutic diet or another food plan suits your cat; the right choice depends on the cat’s needs, not just the label.

9. Weight loss should be slow and monitored

AAHA’s 2024 guidance sets a general maximum loss rate of 1%–2% of body weight per week. Your veterinarian should set the individual target and monitoring schedule. Rapid weight loss in cats can lead to hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease, which can be life-threatening. Do not fast your cat, sharply restrict food, or make abrupt changes in an attempt to speed progress. If your cat stops eating, contact a veterinarian promptly.
