11 Animals That Can Regrow Limbs, Organs, and Entire Body Parts

Hydra can split into two animals, axolotls rebuild limbs, and some sea stars regenerate whole adults. Here is what 11 regenerative animals can actually replace—and where their abilities stop.

Yes—some animals can replace missing limbs, organs, tails, or even most of a body. The abilities differ dramatically: a deer renews antlers seasonally, a lizard rebuilds a tail with altered anatomy, and a planarian fragment can organize an entire new worm. “Regeneration” covers all of these cases, from replacing a few cells to restoring a complex structure. The eleven examples below are not equivalent, and species, age, life stage, tissue and injury conditions determine what can actually regrow.

What animal regeneration really means

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences defines regeneration as replacing or restoring damaged or missing cells, tissues, organs or entire body parts to function. That definition includes ordinary-looking tissue repair as well as spectacular whole-body reconstruction. A regenerated structure may be smaller, differently shaped or missing parts of the original anatomy, so “regrows” does not always mean “makes an exact duplicate.”

Scientists describe several cellular strategies. Planarians rely heavily on adult pluripotent stem cells. Amphibians and fish commonly activate progenitor cells that are more restricted to particular lineages, and some animals temporarily return mature cells to a more flexible state (dedifferentiation). These strategies help explain why a hydra, axolotl and mammal can all be called regenerative while replacing very different amounts of tissue.

Humans and other complex animals retain useful repair abilities, but they do not routinely regenerate complete limbs. The examples here are research models and naturally occurring cases—not evidence that a human injury will heal in the same way.

11 animals with remarkable regenerative abilities

1. Hydra: two animals from one body

Hydra are tiny freshwater cnidarians with a simple tube-shaped body and tentacles. When a hydra is cut in half under suitable conditions, each piece can organize missing structures and form a complete animal. The result is not merely wound closure: the fragment re-establishes body polarity, produces a new mouth or foot as needed, and resumes normal feeding and movement.

Hydra’s simple anatomy makes it a classic model for studying how cells know where they are and which structures to build. Its capacity is extensive, but it should not be generalized to animals with complex organs and skeletons.

2. Planarian flatworm: a fragment can become a whole worm

Planarians are freshwater flatworms famous for their adult pluripotent stem cells, called neoblasts. A small body fragment can, in the right conditions, regenerate a head, tail and the organs needed for a functioning worm. Cells in the fragment and signals around the wound coordinate the body plan rather than simply filling a gap with scar tissue.

Not every cut, tissue or condition produces a viable animal. Planarian regeneration also involves distinct mechanisms at cell and tissue levels, which is why this example cannot be treated as a universal blueprint for vertebrates.

3. Axolotl: limbs and several organs

The axolotl, a Mexican salamander that remains aquatic as an adult, can regenerate limbs and multiple other structures. NIGMS describes it as capable of regenerating the form and function of almost any limb, organ or other body part. Researchers have documented regeneration involving the limb, spinal cord, heart and other tissues.

“Almost any” is an agency-level description, not a promise of limitless or flawless replacement. Outcomes depend on the animal’s age, the location and severity of the injury, infection and experimental conditions. The new limb must also reconnect nerves, blood vessels, muscles and skin, making axolotls valuable for studying coordinated tissue patterning.

4. Zebrafish: repairing heart, fins, eyes and more

Zebrafish provide a vertebrate example of selective regeneration. NIGMS lists studied repair or regeneration in the heart, fins, pancreas, eyes, brain and spinal cord. After certain injuries, surviving cells and progenitors can replace lost tissue and restore at least some function.

This does not mean every zebrafish injury heals completely or that every tissue regenerates equally well. The result depends on the organ, the developmental stage and the experimental injury. Their transparent embryos and well-characterized genetics let scientists watch these responses in living animals.

5. Lizards: a replacement tail with different anatomy

Many lizard species can shed (autotomize) a tail and grow a replacement. The regenerated tail can contain cartilage and a regenerated spinal-cord-like structure, but it usually does not reproduce the original tail’s vertebrae, scales or internal arrangement exactly. Muscles, nerves and skin are rebuilt in a modified pattern.

Tail regeneration is strongly species- and tissue-specific. A lizard that replaces a tail should not be described as able to regrow a leg or any other body part. Research on lizard wound healing also shows that different tissues within the tail follow different repair programs.

6. Deer: antlers that return every year

Deer are the standout mammalian example because males of many species shed and regrow antlers on a recurring cycle. Antlers are fast-growing, mineralized appendages supplied by blood vessels and nerves while they develop. Once mature, they harden into bone and are later cast, allowing a new set to grow.

This is seasonal appendage regeneration, not a general ability to replace a severed leg or organ. Antler growth is tied to the animal’s life stage, hormones and annual cycle, so it differs fundamentally from the one-time repair of an injury.

7. Sea cucumbers: rebuilding an eviscerated digestive tract

Some sea cucumbers respond to severe stress by ejecting internal organs, a defense called evisceration. Selected species can then regenerate digestive structures. A 2019 review reports that some sea cucumbers regenerate the digestive tract in less than four weeks; that timing is species-qualified, not a universal rate for all sea cucumbers.

The new intestine develops in connection with the mesentery, a tissue that anchors and supplies the gut. Because the animal’s ability varies by species and organ, “sea cucumbers regrow their organs” is too broad without naming the digestive system and the conditions involved.

8. Sea stars: arms, and sometimes an entire adult

Most sea stars can regrow lost arms. For complete regeneration, most species require a portion of the central disk, which contains essential organs and body-patterning information. An isolated arm therefore does not automatically become a new sea star.

Some species in the genus Linckia are exceptional: an autotomized arm may regenerate into an entire adult when it contains the necessary tissues. The outcome depends on species and on how much central-disk tissue remains. Sea-star studies also distinguish adult regeneration from larval whole-body regeneration in echinoderms.

9. Newts: limb and lens regeneration

Newts are salamanders and long-standing models of limb regeneration. After amputation, a wound epidermis and underlying blastema coordinate the rebuilding of bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and skin. Some salamanders, including certain newts, can also regenerate an eye lens.

These abilities are not identical across all salamander species, body parts or ages. A statement that “all salamanders regrow anything” would be wrong; the appropriate claim names the structure and species being studied.

10. Xenopus frogs: an important model with stage-dependent limits

Frogs in the genus Xenopus appear frequently in regeneration research because their development, genetics and embryos are experimentally accessible. Their regenerative capacity changes with life stage: larval animals can show broader repair responses than post-metamorphic frogs, whose limb regeneration is much more limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because results differ between species such as Xenopus laevis and Xenopus tropicalis, and between larvae and adults, a precise claim must identify the species, tissue and developmental stage. Xenopus is best presented as a research system rather than as a single, uniform “regrows a limb” example.

11. Sea urchins: whole-body regeneration in larval studies

Sea urchins are echinoderms related to sea stars. Regeneration research on them includes larval stages, in which whole-body repair can be investigated after injury. These studies examine shared mechanisms among echinoderm larvae, including how cells restore body axes and specialized tissues.

Larval findings should not be translated into a claim that an adult sea urchin regrows limbs like an axolotl. Adult and larval bodies differ substantially, and the evidence is strongest for the specific life stages and tissues used in experiments.

How the eleven examples compare

Animal Primary example What limits the claim
Hydra Body halves can form complete animals Simple cnidarian body plan; conditions matter
Planarian Small fragments can regenerate a whole worm Requires suitable fragment and physiology
Axolotl Limbs and multiple organs Extent varies with injury, age and tissue
Zebrafish Heart, fins, pancreas, eyes, brain and spinal cord studied Not every injury or organ fully restores function
Lizard Tail replacement Regrown tail anatomy differs; species-specific
Deer Seasonal antler renewal Does not imply limb regeneration
Sea cucumber Digestive tract after evisceration Some species; “less than four weeks” is not universal
Sea star Arms; some Linckia arms can form adults Most species need part of the central disk
Newt Limbs and, in some species, lens Structure and species must be specified
Xenopus frog Stage-dependent regeneration research model Species and larval/adult stage change the result
Sea urchin Larval whole-body regeneration studies Do not generalize larval evidence to adults

Why regenerative powers vary so widely

Different cell sources

Planarians maintain adult pluripotent stem cells that can produce many cell types. In vertebrates, regeneration more often depends on lineage-restricted progenitors, such as cells already associated with muscle, cartilage or blood vessels. Mature cells may also dedifferentiate temporarily before dividing or changing identity. The available cell source sets a practical limit on what can be rebuilt.

Body pattern and chemical signals

A wound must be told whether it is at the head, tail, inner organ or outer surface. Electrical states, growth factors, nerve signals and positional genes help establish that information. Hydra and planarians are especially useful for studying body-axis cues; salamanders show how nerves and a wound epidermis support a new limb.

Life stage, age and environment

Larvae often regenerate structures that adults cannot. Regenerative performance can decline with age, and temperature, nutrition, infection and the location of an injury can alter the outcome. A result from a laboratory embryo or larva should therefore never be presented as a guarantee for an adult animal.

What these animals mean for people—and what they do not

Comparative regeneration research helps identify signals that control stem cells, inflammation, scar formation and tissue patterning. It may eventually inform treatments for damaged nerves, hearts or other tissues. However, no example here demonstrates that humans can regrow a complete arm or leg. Human healing usually closes wounds and forms scar tissue rather than reconstructing a missing complex appendage.

For pet owners, an animal that appears to regenerate is still vulnerable to infection, pain and permanent disability. A lizard’s tail, a fish fin or a salamander limb should never be intentionally injured to observe regrowth. Any injured pet needs a veterinarian, even when its species has a documented regenerative ability.

Key takeaways

  • Regeneration ranges from cell replacement to rebuilding organs, appendages or most of a body.
  • Hydra and planarians can regenerate from fragments, but their biology is not interchangeable.
  • Axolotls, newts and zebrafish show substantial but selective vertebrate regeneration.
  • Lizard tails, deer antlers, sea-cucumber intestines and sea-star arms each have distinct limits.
  • Species, tissue, age, life stage and experimental conditions determine the result.
  • Animal regeneration is a research guide, not proof that humans can regrow limbs.
