The Cats.com article does not establish a comparable cost for all 11 products, so a price ranking would not be meaningful. Prices and package sizes can change; check current listings and labels before choosing.
How did Cats.com choose its picks?
Cats.com says it tested the recipes with more than half a dozen team cats. The publisher reports buying most products at full retail, sending samples of some products to an ISO 17025-certified food testing laboratory, and assessing appearance, smell, texture, consistency, and packaging. It also considered product information and customer reviews. These are the publisher’s stated methods, not independent evidence that most picky cats will prefer the same foods.

The page reports 3,192 hours of research, 266 brands vetted, and 11 features reviewed. Those are Cats.com’s process figures, not scientific measurements of cat preferences. How should you choose among the foods?
Start with the format your cat accepts
These options range from fresh ground food and kibble to pâté, stew, shredded chicken, gravy, and freeze-dried recipes. Cats can respond differently to mouthfeel, texture, size, shape, smell, and flavor; the list does not show that one format works best for all cats. If your cat turns away from pâté or kibble, a different texture—such as the shredded chicken in Tiki Cat’s broth—may be a reasonable trial, not a sure fix.

Match the food to your cat’s needs
Check the current label for whether the food is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage, along with feeding directions. The comparison includes a specifically named kitten food, so do not assume every item suits kittens. If your cat has a medical condition or a prescribed diet, ask your veterinarian before changing food.
Check moisture and preparation
Wet foods, dry kibble, fresh food, and freeze-dried products differ in moisture and handling. For freeze-dried food, follow the manufacturer’s current directions and confirm whether it needs rehydration. Do not infer preparation instructions from the format name alone.

Compare the real cost for your household
Calculate cost using the package size, your cat’s daily portion, and any shipping or subscription terms that apply. A price per package alone can mislead when serving sizes and formats differ. The Cats.com comparison does not supply a consistent cost basis across all 11 foods.

A sudden change in appetite is different from a long-standing preference. Dental, gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver disease, pain, and stress can all contribute to appetite loss. Contact a veterinarian promptly about a sudden appetite change, particularly if your cat is losing weight, seems ill, or has other symptoms.

Purina advises veterinary attention if a cat has not eaten for more than 24–36 hours, and immediate contact when other signs of illness are present. PetMD advises a veterinary visit for sudden appetite changes and care if a cat goes more than 24 hours without eating. Follow your veterinarian’s advice rather than waiting to see whether a new food solves a possible health problem. For a cat that is otherwise well
If your veterinarian is not concerned about a health issue, small changes may help identify what your cat accepts. Purina suggests offering food at room temperature or slightly warmer, trying a different food or topper, using a food puzzle, or hand-feeding. These are options, not guaranteed fixes. Disrupted routines and stale food can also affect interest.

When changing diets, transition gradually rather than replacing the old food abruptly. Royal Canin recommends a smooth transition over 7–10 days on its US product page. Its statement that the food was “tested and approved by owners of fussy cats” is based on the manufacturer’s internal study, not independent trial evidence.
