Its ranking also includes powders, capsules, gels, and chews aimed at different feeding preferences. These are the review’s picks—not universal veterinary recommendations—and probiotic benefits are not established for every cat or digestive problem.

The Cats.com team says it purchased and tested 11 products. It reports excluding DrFormulas Nexabiotic because its test cats would not eat food mixed with it and the package’s strain listing seemed unclear. Those observations belong to that team; they are not an independent test result.

What the review reports about strains, counts, and formats
The review’s figures below are its reported label details, not independently verified current guarantees. CFU means colony-forming units, a measure of viable microorganisms. A higher number alone does not show that a product is more effective; the organism or strain, serving, product handling, and the cat’s needs all matter.

These numbers should be compared at the cat’s intended serving, not across different package sizes or serving definitions. Read the current label for the named organism or strain, the live count guaranteed at the recommended serving, storage and handling instructions, and cost per serving. The review gives a general suggestion of 1–5 billion CFUs daily, but also says there are no official cat dosing guidelines. That range is the review’s advice, not an established veterinary dose or a reason to increase a cat’s serving.

Do vets recommend probiotics for cats?
Veterinarians may recommend probiotics in selected circumstances, but that does not mean every cat needs one or that a supplement treats the cause of a symptom. VCA describes probiotics as live microorganisms used to support or replenish normal microbial populations after disruption, which can occur with medication, diet changes, disease, or stress. VCA also notes that few supplements have rigorous trials establishing efficacy and advises veterinary guidance.

The feline microbiome is not as well understood as the human microbiome. Some proposed uses concern digestive issues such as diarrhea or constipation; immune and kidney-related effects are also discussed, but proposed mechanisms are not established treatment benefits. The Cats.com review says the efficacy of Azodyl is unclear. The available sources do not establish a broadly applicable clinical effect size for cat probiotics.

Ask a veterinarian about persistent diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, or another ongoing problem rather than trying to diagnose or treat it with a supplement. Veterinary guidance is particularly important for cats that are sick, debilitated, or immunocompromised; VCA cautions about probiotic use in these animals.
Can cats use human probiotics?
Human-labeled products are not categorically unsafe for cats, and a cat label does not by itself prove that a product is better matched to feline needs. Cats.com argues that the feline microbiome is not understood well enough to ensure products labeled for cats are uniquely targeted; it also notes that cat-oriented flavors or formats may be easier to administer. Treat that as the review’s perspective, not a settled comparative finding.

Do not choose solely by the word “human” or “cat” on the package. Ask your veterinarian whether the product’s specific organism or strain and intended serving suit your cat, and check the ingredients and directions before use.
How to choose and give a cat probiotic
- Start with the reason for use. Discuss persistent symptoms or a cat with a health condition with a veterinarian before adding a supplement.
- Check the organism or strain. Compare the exact name on the label with any strain your veterinarian recommends; a general species name or a high CFU count is not enough to establish a match.
- Compare the live count at the intended serving. Confirm whether the label states a guaranteed count for the recommended cat serving, rather than relying on a number for the whole container.
- Choose a workable format. Powders may be mixed with food; gels, capsules, and chews have different administration demands. A product the cat refuses is not a practical option.
- Follow storage and handling directions. Check whether refrigeration or protection from moisture, heat, or light is required, and use the package as directed.
- Use the label and veterinary advice for dosing. There are no official cat dosing guidelines established in the cited review. Do not treat its 1–5 billion CFUs daily suggestion as a universal dose.
- Compare cost per intended serving. Package price alone can mislead when products have different serving sizes or daily directions.
What the rules mean for animal probiotic claims
In the United States, “pet dietary supplement” is not a separate regulatory category under the human Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The FDA explains that animal products are regulated as food or animal drugs depending on ingredients and intended use. A product’s claims matter: the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine’s March 1995 compliance policy guide says, “A direct-fed microbial product with label/promotional claims for disease cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention is a new animal drug and is adulterated under Section 501(a)(5) unless it is the subject of an approved new animal drug application (NADA).”

This regulatory distinction is one reason not to read a product label or marketing claim as proof that a probiotic will prevent or cure a disease.
