11 Common Cat Sounds: What They May Mean and When to Worry

Meows, purrs, chirps, growls, and yowls are clues—not a fixed dictionary. Learn how to read cat sounds in context and recognize vocal changes that merit a vet call.

Cats use sounds to greet, request, warn, and communicate distress—but there is no fixed dictionary that translates every meow or purr. The same sound can mean different things depending on your cat, the setting, body language, and what happened just before it. These 11 familiar sound labels are useful clues, not diagnoses or universal definitions.

How to interpret a cat’s sounds

Listen to the sound, then look at the whole situation: your cat’s posture, ears, appetite, activity, and behavior before and after vocalizing. Also consider what is typical for that individual cat. Adult cats commonly direct meows at people, and many develop recognizable patterns for asking for food, attention, access, or another response. A sound recording can offer an example, but it cannot establish a cat’s emotion, intent, or health.

The labels below are practical descriptions, not a standardized classification. In particular, people may use “chirp,” “chirrup,” and “trill” in overlapping ways, as they may “yowl” and “caterwaul.”

11 common cat sounds and what they may mean

1. Mew

A kitten’s small, high call may be directed to its mother and can signal hunger or distress. This meaning is especially relevant to kittens; do not assume an adult cat’s similar-sounding call has the same cause. Cats Protection explains kitten mews and cat vocalizations.

2. Meow

An adult cat may meow to greet a person or request food, attention, access to a room, or another response. The sound and pattern can be individual: what one cat uses to ask for dinner may be different from another cat’s greeting. Consider what is happening and what your cat does next rather than relying on pitch alone. Cats Protection and VCA Animal Hospitals describe common contexts for meowing.

3. Purr

A cat may purr while resting, kneading, or appearing relaxed, but purring does not prove happiness. Cats may also purr when stressed or in pain. Check for other changes, such as hiding, restlessness, reduced appetite, altered grooming, difficulty moving, or unusual elimination. Cats Protection, VCA Animal Hospitals, and VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital discuss purring and signs that may accompany pain.

4. Chirrup or trill

5. Chirp

A chirp is commonly described as a brief, high sound. VCA notes that cats may chirp in friendly contexts, such as greeting someone or being near a food bowl. Because “chirp” and “chirrup” can overlap in everyday descriptions, focus on what your cat was doing rather than trying to distinguish the labels precisely. VCA Animal Hospitals describes common chirping contexts.

6. Chitter or chatter

Some cats chatter while watching birds or other prey, often from a window. A prey-related instinct is a proposed explanation. The idea that cats are imitating prey sounds is anecdotal, not established research, so it should not be presented as the definite reason. VCA Animal Hospitals distinguishes the proposed explanation from the anecdotal mimicry theory.

7. Growl

A growl is a warning: give the cat space and stop pressing the interaction. Continuing to approach, touch, or restrain a growling cat can escalate the situation. Cats Protection and VCA Animal Hospitals describe growling as a warning sound.

8. Hiss

A hiss is defensive and signals that the cat wants distance. Do not punish the cat or force contact. Ease off and allow a clear route to retreat. Cats Protection and VCA Animal Hospitals discuss hissing and defensive vocalizations.

9. Spit

A spit may accompany a hiss as part of defensive behavior. Treat it as a warning to back away, not as a reason to pick up or handle the cat. VCA Animal Hospitals includes spitting among defensive sounds.

10. Yowl or caterwaul

A yowl is a drawn-out vocalization. It may occur with mating behavior, but it can also accompany distress, discomfort, being trapped, or pain. A change in how often or in what circumstances your cat yowls is more informative than assigning one meaning to the sound. If your cat vocalizes in the litter box, contact a veterinarian. VCA Animal Hospitals, VCA Animal Hospitals, and ASPCA cover yowling and situations that merit attention.

11. Scream

VCA describes screaming in contexts such as a fight, extreme sudden pain, or mating. If your cat screams and you suspect pain, seek veterinary care as soon as possible. VCA Animal Hospitals describes these contexts and advises prompt care when pain is suspected.

Why is my cat yowling at night?

Nighttime yowling can have different causes, and the sound alone cannot identify one. Note when it happens, how often it occurs, and whether anything else has changed, including your cat’s appetite, activity, mobility, or litter-box habits. Frequent nighttime calling—particularly in an older cat or alongside other changes—is a reason to contact a veterinarian. VCA Animal Hospitals discusses nighttime vocalization and other concerning changes; ASPCA recommends evaluation when excessive vocalizing may reflect distress or illness.

Why does my cat hiss or growl at me?

Hissing and growling communicate that a cat wants distance. Stop approaching or handling the cat, reduce noise or other pressure if possible, and leave space for it to move away. Do not punish the warning. If this behavior is new or comes with signs such as hiding, reduced appetite, restlessness, or difficulty moving, contact a veterinarian; a health problem can affect behavior, and the sound cannot diagnose the cause. VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital describes vocalization and behavioral changes that may accompany pain.

When should I worry about a change in my cat’s meow?

Contact a veterinarian about a marked change in vocalization, persistent excess calling, a raspy or changed meow, frequent nighttime vocalizing, or sounds in the litter box—especially when other behavior or health changes are present. Cats may show pain through unexpected purring, increased meowing, or growling or hissing when approached, alongside changes in hiding, restlessness, appetite, grooming, mobility, or elimination. None of these signs identifies a condition by itself; a veterinary assessment is needed to investigate the cause. VCA Animal Hospitals, Cats Protection, and VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital outline vocalization changes and related signs that warrant attention.
