Choose based on how you plan to use it, check its calories and ingredients, and keep treats to no more than 10% of your cat’s daily calories. Cats eating a veterinary diet or managing a health condition need a treat plan approved by their veterinary team.
What are the different types of cat treats?
These eight categories describe common formats and uses; they are not an official veterinary classification. A cat may like one texture and refuse another, but preference alone does not indicate nutritional quality.

1. Crunchy biscuits or morsels
Dry, shelf-stable treats can be convenient for rewards. Compare calories per piece and the suggested portion. Crunchiness by itself does not establish that a treat cleans teeth.

3. Lickable purees and moist treats
Purees can work as a high-value reward or be spread on a lick mat. Measure the amount rather than treating a pouch as a single unrestricted serving. Refrigerate or discard leftovers as the package directs; promptly refrigerate opened canned or pouched food.
4. Freeze-dried treats
Check whether the product is raw or cooked. Freeze-drying does not itself make raw animal ingredients pathogen-free: veterinary guidance warns that freeze-dried or dehydrated raw products can carry pathogen risks.

5. Dehydrated or jerky-style treats
Read the ingredients and consider the treat’s texture and size. “Natural” or dried does not mean risk-free, and raw animal-based products can pose pathogen risks.
6. Dental treats
Dental claims should be specific to the product and the evidence supporting it. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) accepted-products list for cats, last updated in February 2026, includes products accepted for tartar reduction and one product accepted for plaque and tartar reduction. Acceptance is product- and claim-specific; check the current VOHC accepted-products list, since the list and product availability can change. Dental treats are one part of oral care, not a replacement for broader dental care.

7. Pill-delivery treats or pockets
Pill pockets may make medication easier to give when appropriate. Before using one, ask the veterinary team whether it is compatible with the particular medicine and any prescribed diet; a treat’s general suitability does not establish that it is right for a specific medication.
8. Single-ingredient or limited-ingredient treats
A shorter ingredient list may make it easier to track what a cat eats, but the label alone does not prove suitability for a diagnosed food allergy or therapeutic diet. Ask the veterinarian what is appropriate if an allergy or sensitivity is suspected.

How do you choose a healthy treat?
- Start with calories. Check calories per treat or serving and account for treats within the day’s total food. WSAVA and VCA recommend that treats provide no more than 10% of daily calories; using 10% as a conservative ceiling leaves most calories for complete, balanced food. Individual needs vary.
- Read the full ingredient list. Consider ingredients relevant to your cat’s known sensitivities. “Limited ingredient” wording alone does not confirm that a treat is suitable for an allergy or a veterinary diet.
- Match the format to the purpose and the cat. Consider whether your cat can comfortably chew it and whether you need a training reward, medication aid, enrichment activity, or a treat with a specific dental claim.
- Check health and diet restrictions. A cat with a medical condition or eating a veterinary diet may need restrictions or a compatible prescription treat. Ask the veterinary team before introducing treats.
- Introduce one new treat at a time. Offer a small amount first, especially if your cat is prone to digestive upset.
- Use safe ingredients and handling. Avoid bones, toxic foods, and unprocessed raw animal treats. WSAVA identifies onions and related alliums, grapes and raisins, chocolate, xylitol, alcohol, raw yeast dough, and caffeinated drinks as unsafe for cats; it also notes that many cats are lactose intolerant.
How many treats can you give a cat?
Use 10% of daily calories as an upper limit, not a target. WSAVA’s 2025 examples for average healthy adult cats in ideal body condition translate that guideline into the following daily treat-calorie allowances. These examples are not personalized feeding targets: a cat’s individual energy needs depend on the cat, so consult a veterinary team for an appropriate amount.

Use the actual calorie information on the treat package to convert a calorie allowance into a number of treats. VCA reports that commercial cat treats average about 2 calories each, but products vary; that average is not a substitute for checking a particular treat’s label.

Are freeze-dried cat treats safe?
It depends on the product and how it was made. Check whether it contains raw or cooked animal ingredients. Veterinary guidance warns that raw animal products, including freeze-dried or dehydrated raw products, can pose pathogen risks. Freeze-drying or dehydration should not be taken as proof that a product is pathogen-free.
How should you store treats and respond to a problem?
Follow the package’s storage and serving instructions. The U.S. FDA advises keeping treats in their original packaging or bag so the product name, UPC, lot number, manufacturer, and best-by date are available if there is a problem. Store treats securely, and promptly refrigerate or discard opened canned or pouched food as directed. If your pet becomes ill after eating a product, stop feeding it and contact a veterinarian.
