Mountain lions are one species, Puma concolor, known by several regional names. They are large, mostly solitary ambush predators whose range stretches across much of the Americas. The facts that most often surprise people are also the ones that need the most context: a “panther” is not necessarily a different cat, a mountain lion cannot roar, and a local population figure cannot stand in for the species worldwide.

This guide explains 11 evidence-based facts about mountain lions, including how large they get, what they eat, where they live, how they raise kittens, and what wildlife agencies say about black mountain lions and conservation. Measurements identified as maximums are reference values, not a promise that every animal reaches them.

1. Mountain lion, cougar, puma, painter, catamount, and panther can mean the same species

Puma concolor is the scientific name for the cat commonly called a mountain lion or cougar. “Puma,” “painter,” and “catamount” are also used, while “panther” is another common name in some regions. These names reflect local language and history rather than separate species.

That variation can make reports sound as if several kinds of big cats are being discussed when they are not. A wildlife notice that says “cougar,” for example, is generally referring to the same animal described as a mountain lion elsewhere. The safest way to identify the subject is to pair the common name with Puma concolor, especially when reading material from a different state or country.

2. It is North America’s second-largest cat after the jaguar

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) describes the mountain lion as North America’s second-largest cat, with the jaguar ranking first. That distinction helps explain why a mountain lion seen at a distance can be mistaken for a much smaller wild cat only until its proportions become clear.

CDFW’s reference figures show a pronounced difference between males and females. The totals below include the tail and are best read as upper reference values, not typical weights for every individual.

Sex Reference total length, including tail Reference maximum weight
Male 7–8 feet Up to 170 pounds
Female 5–7 feet Up to 120 pounds

Age, sex, food availability, and local conditions all affect the size of an individual. A single unusually large animal should not be treated as the standard for the species, and a smaller animal is not automatically a different cat.

3. Its long tail is one of the best clues that it is not a bobcat

CDFW’s comparison with bobcats emphasizes two visible differences: mountain lions are much larger and have a much longer tail. The tail is not a minor detail; it changes the animal’s overall silhouette and can be useful when a sighting is brief or partly obscured.

Feature Mountain lion Bobcat
Overall size Much larger Smaller
Tail Long tail Shorter tail

Distance, vegetation, lighting, and camera quality can distort apparent size, so a photograph or report should include several observations rather than relying on one body feature. Even so, the combination of a large body and conspicuously long tail is a stronger clue than color alone.

4. The species spans from the Canadian Yukon to southern Chile

CDFW describes the mountain lion’s broad range as extending from the Canadian Yukon to southern Chile. That is a continental-scale distribution, not a claim that every part of that span contains the same number of animals or the same habitat conditions.

Within California, CDFW lists forests, foothills, coastal areas, rural landscapes, and wildlife–urban interfaces among the settings mountain lions use. Those examples show how adaptable the species can be, but they should not be read as a universal habitat checklist for every population from Canada to Chile. Occupancy and habitat quality vary by place, prey availability, human development, and local management.

The geographic qualifier matters when interpreting a sighting or a statistic. A description from California may accurately portray California lions while saying little about a population in another country.

5. Deer are important prey, but they are not the whole menu

When people ask, “What do mountain lions eat?”, deer are the familiar answer, but CDFW lists several other large prey animals. Depending on location and opportunity, the list includes elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, wild pigs, and feral horses or burros. Smaller animals may also be taken.

  • Deer
  • Elk
  • Pronghorn
  • Bighorn sheep
  • Wild pigs
  • Feral horses or burros
  • Smaller animals, which CDFW also notes may be prey

This is a list of documented prey categories, not a fixed diet shared in identical proportions by every lion. Available prey differs among landscapes, and the species’ choices can change accordingly. Seeing a mountain lion near one prey species does not prove that it eats only that animal.

6. Surprise is the center of its hunting strategy

Mountain lions hunt as ambush predators. CDFW describes surprise as central to the strategy: the cat uses concealment and a sudden attack rather than relying on a prolonged chase visible from far away.

After a kill, a lion may drag the carcass to cover and cache it. CDFW describes covering the food with dirt, vegetation, or snow. A covered carcass can therefore be part of normal feeding behavior rather than evidence that another predator made the kill or that the animal abandoned it permanently.

The ambush approach also explains why a sighting can be so brief. A person may notice movement only after the cat has already decided to leave, and the absence of a dramatic chase does not mean the animal was not hunting.

7. Mountain lions cannot roar, but they can make many other sounds

“Can mountain lions roar?” The CDFW answer is no: they cannot roar, although they can purr like other small cats. Their vocal repertoire is broader than that single comparison suggests. CDFW lists growls, chirps, yowls, snarls, and hisses as well.

  • Growls
  • Chirps
  • Yowls
  • Snarls
  • Hisses
  • Purring

Not hearing a roar is not a useful way to rule out a mountain lion. A report of a yowl, hiss, or growl should be interpreted with the location, visual evidence, and other signs, because sound alone is difficult to identify reliably.

8. Mothers keep kittens for roughly a year and a half to two years

Mountain lion family life is longer than many people expect for a solitary cat. CDFW says gestation averages about three months, litters commonly contain two to four kittens, and kittens remain with their mother for 18–24 months.

That extended period gives young lions time to develop the skills needed for an independent life. It also means a female with dependent kittens may be using an area for a much longer continuous period than a casual sighting suggests. A young lion seen alone is not automatically orphaned; the mother may be nearby or the animal may be approaching independence.

The National Park Service reports a local estimate of three to four kittens per litter at Valles Caldera and says about 50 percent survive the first year. Those figures describe that park population, not a universal survival rate for every mountain lion range.

9. “Black panthers” are not documented as black mountain lions

Are black mountain lions real? The Missouri Department of Conservation states that no melanistic mountain lion has been recorded across the species’ range. In other words, the agency has not documented a naturally black color form of Puma concolor anywhere in its range.

A dark photograph, heavy shadow, poor color balance, or a different species can create an impression of a black mountain lion. Color is therefore a weak identification feature by itself. Body proportions, the long tail, behavior, and clear documentation are more useful when evaluating a report.

10. A local density estimate cannot be applied to every population

Mountain lions are generally solitary and use large territories, but the amount of space and the number of animals in an area vary with habitat, prey, and local conditions. The National Park Service gives an estimated adult density of about one lion per 100 square kilometers at Valles Caldera.

That number is a local park estimate, not a species-wide average. It should not be multiplied across the entire range or used to predict how many lions live in a particular neighborhood, county, or country. Local agencies may use different methods and may report adults, all age classes, or occupied habitat differently.

For readers, the practical lesson is to check the geography and population definition attached to any number. “One lion per 100 square kilometers” has meaning only when the named study area and the word “adult” stay with it.

11. Mountain lions affect ecosystems, and their legal status depends on location

CDFW describes mountain lions as providing an ecosystem benefit by helping regulate prey populations. The same agency notes that conflict can include loss of livestock or pets. Feeding deer can attract mountain lions, so an action intended to help wildlife may increase the chance of a close encounter.

Protection and management are not identical everywhere. In California, CDFW records a 1972 hunting moratorium and the passage of Proposition 117 in 1990. The agency also records a 2020 candidate-listing action for a proposed central-coast and southern-California evolutionarily significant unit. Those milestones apply to California policy and a specifically described unit; they are not a single legal status for every mountain lion from the Yukon to Chile.

If a mountain lion is reported near a home, livestock operation, or trail, residents should use the current advice of the wildlife agency responsible for that location. Agency guidance can differ because laws, prey conditions, and conflict-response rules are geographic.

What these facts mean when you see a report

A reliable interpretation starts by separating species-wide traits from local observations. The species identity, long tail, large size, ambush behavior, and inability to roar are broadly useful clues. Diet, habitat use, density, survival, and legal treatment require a place name and often a date.

  • Use Puma concolor when common names are creating confusion.
  • Treat male and female size figures as reference maxima, not guarantees.
  • Use body size and tail length together when distinguishing a mountain lion from a bobcat.
  • Keep local estimates, such as the Valles Caldera density and kitten-survival figures, tied to that site.
  • Check current local wildlife-agency guidance for encounters, pets, livestock, and attractants.
