  • Holly and Ivy
  • Donner and Blitzen
  • Sugar and Plum
  • Jingle and Bell
  • Charlie and Snoopy

How to choose and teach a Christmas cat name

  1. Say your top choices aloud. A name that looks charming on paper may be awkward to repeat. Short names or names with a clear ending can be easier to use consistently.
  2. Check that it sounds different from commands or other names. Avoid names easily confused with another pet’s name or a frequently used household word.
  3. Pick one primary name. Cats can be renamed at any age and learn to associate a name’s sound with attention, food, play, or another positive experience. Consistency helps while your cat is learning.
  4. Reward attention promptly. Say the name when your cat is relaxed. When the cat looks toward you, immediately offer a small treat, praise, or a favorite toy.
  5. Keep practice brief. Cats Protection recommends sessions of no more than three minutes. Repeat them regularly rather than turning training into a long lesson. Read Cats Protection’s guidance on teaching a cat to respond to its name.
  6. Do not shout or punish. If your cat ignores you, wait for a quieter moment and try again with a positive reward. Cats Protection explains how cats learn and whether you can change a cat’s name.

Christmas safety for cats

A festive name is harmless; the real decorations, plants, and food may not be. Keep these hazards out of reach:

  • Poinsettias: They are not usually severely poisonous, but can irritate a cat’s mouth and stomach and may cause vomiting. The ASPCA’s poinsettia guidance explains the risk.
  • Holly and mistletoe: Eating them can cause gastrointestinal problems and potentially cardiovascular problems.
  • Lilies: Lilies in holiday bouquets are a major danger to cats and can cause kidney failure. Do not bring them into a cat-accessible home.
  • Tinsel, ribbon, wire, and string: Swallowing these can cause serious intestinal problems. If a strand is visible, do not pull it; contact a veterinarian.
  • Chocolate, alcohol, fatty or spicy foods, and cooked bones: Do not offer these as festive treats.
  • Christmas trees: Secure the tree and keep tree water inaccessible to pets.

The ASPCA’s holiday safety tips cover these plant, food, and decoration risks. If your cat eats a plant, decoration, alcohol, chocolate, or another questionable item, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison service promptly.
